Dear Hiteon Families,

Spring is in full bloom, and kindness at Hiteon continues to be a school focus! Life at Hiteon is busy as usual, with so many community events taking place. Tonight and tomorrow, some of our fourth and fifth-grade students are presenting the musical, Aladdin. Thanks to our music teachers, Marisa Quinn and Julia McGarrity, Hiteon is the only elementary school in Beaverton to produce a musical. It is the second year, and our students and community are so appreciative of their passion and dedication to the Hiteon Community.

Next week on March 12, the Science Expo will from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Hiteon. Students are looking forward to sharing their science projects, and we are excited to see what our Hiteon Scientists have learned.

Lastly, we all have the coronavirus on our minds. Hiteon continues to monitor developments with the coronavirus (COVID-19) closely. The health and safety of our students and our community are of the utmost importance to us. Beaverton School District is following the recommendations from our local and state Health Departments as well as the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

In response to keeping our community safe and healthy, we are providing additional general illness precautions at Hiteon and will be maintaining our ongoing disease prevention practices. These practices include hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, monitoring our students for signs of illness, and extra cleaning of classroom surfaces. Our Custodial Team will also be cleaning multi-use areas such as doorknobs and railings more often in the coming weeks.

With colds, coughs and flu season upon us. Please review the poster below for reminders of when to keep your students home when they are too sick for school.

This spring, students in grades 3 – 8 and 11 in the Beaverton School District and throughout Oregon will be taking state tests (Smarter Balanced) in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

In addition to content standards, these assessments are designed to measure critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. The test results provide you, our schools, our district and the state with information about how well we are preparing our students for their next steps including college and career readiness.

Our students will take these tests once between January and June 2020. House Bill 2655 permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. The school shall provide any student who is exempted from a state test with supervised study time while other students are testing.

If you have opted out of state testing for your child in the past you will need to fill out the form above again and turn into the school office by March 30.

In the last newsletter, we shared that all classrooms at Hiteon are using some version of Zones of Regulation posters in their classrooms. We encouraged you to share your feelings with your child as you experience emotions because modeling these coping skills regularly will help our children learn to regulate their emotions as well. We believe that explicitly modeling and practicing these skills helps a child use them when they need them most.

Take a look at the first video which is a parent tool kit video on that topic.

We are also working on teaching calming strategies coping skills such as: take deep breaths, get a drink of water, walk away, use headphones, and more. The second video slip does a beautiful job of explaining calming strategies.

Please share your coping strategies with your child(ren). The more they see you using calming strategies, the more lively they are to practice them on their own. Lastly, please remember children learn these skills best when they are calm, and it takes time and practice to learn these skills. The more children practice, the more likely they will access these skills when they need it most.

The Beaverton School District is now enrolling for Kindergarten at all elementary schools for the 2020-2021 school year.

Any child who will be five (5) years of age on or before September 1, 2020 is now eligible to enroll for Kindergarten at their designated home school. Online Registration is available for new student enrollment. After the online application has been submitted you will want to schedule a visit to your child's school, prior to the first day of their attending. This visit is important as you may receive ​school-specific forms to complete. ​Parents/guardians will need to provide a birth certificate and immunization record at the time of enrollment.

Each elementary school will offer parents an orientation to find out more about the Kindergarten program at their spring Kindergarten Orientation events. Please check the Kindergarten webpage or with your neighborhood school to see when the orientation is scheduled.
