"Seek to Understand" - Superintendent Sobotta
It is our promise to our students, parents, and community members that we are going to do everything we can to ensure that every student is known, loved, and learning. In regard to our Native students, I believe that at a minimum we need to know their individual cultural heritage. I believe that part of "loving" our Native students is a desire to seek to learn, understand, and honor. On my own journey, I have made an intentional effort this month to learn more. This has included several conversations with tribal members and reading. For those that are interested in learning more and/or are interested in different perspectives, I read the short article as I was looking into Thanksgiving on the Smithsonian website: https://americanindian.si.edu/sites/1/files/pdf/education/NMAI_Harvest_Study_Guide.pdf
As a learning institute it is of paramount importance that we continue to not teach our scholars what to think but rather HOW to think and foster skills for learning as they continue on their own quest for knowledge and understanding.
Note: If you did not see this article in the Spokesman a couple of weeks ago, it is definitely worth reading: https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2023/nov/05/our-language-identifies-who-we-are-determined-to-p/?utm_email=8da4f16305&utm_source=The+Spokesman-Review+Newsletters&utm_campaign=7c69ad425e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_05_24_08_40_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_38e7a8f269-7c69ad425e-362017804

Nurse Update - Shannon Landt
Hello Reardan Families,
We have completed vision and hearing screening, per WA state law, for grades TK-7. If there was a vision or hearing concern, you should receive a referral letter in the mail with further instructions. Please also call and let me know if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s ability to see and hear at school. We have gift certificates available from an organization called VSP Eyes of Hope, they can be used at eye clinics that accept VSP vision insurance. Criteria is listed below. These certificates are available for all students pk-12th grade. I do have a limited number so please reach out to me if you could benefit from this service.
*VSP eyes of hope gift certificates are distributed through a network of community partners nationwide for a free comprehensive eye exam and prescription glasses, to children who meet the following criteria:
• 19 years or younger
• Family income up to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level guidelines
• Have not used a VSP program within the last 12 months
• Do not have other public or private insurance coverage for the benefits covered by the gift certificate
If your child qualifies, talk to me about obtaining a VSP eyes of hope gift certificate available through the National Association of School Nurses. I will have them available during conferences next week at both the HS and Elementary offices.
Thanks so much!
Shannon Landt, RN
Thank you Facilities Advisory Committee!
This committee, led by Jim Porter, met this past week (and have been meeting all year) as they work toward a long-term facilities plan for the school district. Made up of community members, parents, staff, and architects, they are on the home stretch in their planning work. THANK YOU!

Loneliness - Superintendent Sobotta
I came across this excerpt on a weekly listserv I subscribe to. I got to thinking about those in my circles that I need to reach out to during this holiday season. Do you have anyone that comes to mind for you?
"Loneliness crushes the soul, but researchers are finding it does far more damage than that. It is linked to strokes, heart disease, dementia, inflammation and suicide; it breaks the heart literally as well as figuratively...
Loneliness is as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and more lethal than consuming six alcoholic drinks a day, according to the surgeon general of the United States, Dr. Vivek Murthy...
We Americans, atomized and polarized, addicted and distressed, are a lonely crowd. Overwhelming evidence suggests that for the sake of our happiness and well-being, we need one another." Nicholas Kristof, The New York Times | Opinion Columnist (Sept.6, 2023)
