Hopkins High School
December 2022
Salutations!
As we know the season leading up to the holidays is busy and necessary. A season of waiting, anticipating, and hoping. This is also the beginning of our second trimester which should be busy and necessary for our student’s education and advancement. It should not be a time of procrastination and hoping for the best. By the time our winter break begins on December 21st we will be four weeks into our trimester (⅓ of the way through it).
As mentioned in the last newsletter…we do have so much to be thankful for. This newsletter I would like to encourage everyone to celebrate the “gifts” they have already received. The biggest gift one can ever receive is opportunity. The best way to embrace opportunity is to work with the gifts we possess. Those gifts are:
The gift of intelligence- Intelligence comes in different forms; academic, ethical, mechanical, practical, etc.. Using one’s given abilities with the best effort possible will go miles to reach the opportunities of this second trimester. Work hard and see the benefits.
The gift of a caring heart- We are in the middle of a food drive and a toy drive. Showing care for those in our community and beyond gives us an opportunity to demonstrate that we will be contributing to the good of the whole for years to come.
What greater gift can we ask for, beyond opportunities? I know this community and our kids will shine in the moment and embrace the opportunities!
Yours in Education and wishing you Happy Holidays,
Ken Szczepanski, HHS Principal

Information for ALL students:
Did your student fail a class Trimester 1? Have your student see their school counselor so that they can make a plan to re-take that class and earn that credit for graduation. Students can make an appointment with their school counselor by requesting a meeting through email, stopping by the office to see them, or submitting a green Appointment Request Form found in the Office.
STATS from the COUNSELING OFFICE
32 colleges (2-year, 4-year, and trade school colleges) visited during lunchtime in Trimester 1. This is a great way for 9th-11th graders to start thinking about what different colleges are like and what kinds of majors and areas of study they offer - as well as for 12th-graders to find out about how to apply.
Military branches visited 10 times during lunchtime.
Army, Navy, Air Force, Army National Guard visited during the career fair
13 colleges visited during the career fair
SENIORS
Here is the link to the Senior Packet that was distributed at the Senior Meeting.
Seniors and Senior Parents/Guardians —- Have you already been accepted to colleges and are you receiving Financial Aid letters from them indicating your financial options? Not all letters are the same - different colleges have different forms/options, and each one can be a little confusing if you are not familiar with the format of those letters. See your school counselor who can help you review them and understand what you are being offered, so you can make an informed decision.
Seniors - REMINDER that Holiday Break is a great time to complete or start those college and trade school applications. You will have a break from classwork and have more time to give to applications! See your school counselor before break to ask questions about how to get started.
FAFSA - Students applying to 2-year colleges, 4-year colleges, and trade schools are encouraged to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be eligible for scholarships, grants, and federal aid. Most post-secondary schools participate with federal student aid programs, however, you can check with each school to be certain. Schools also sometimes use the FAFSA information to determine eligibility for their own in-house scholarships and grants. The FAFSA opens online Oct 1 for families to complete - the sooner you complete the more opportunities students are eligible for. See your school counselor with questions. https://studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/filling-out/help
When you are ACCEPTED to a college, trade school, military, job, or apprenticeship it is time to celebrate and let us know! Each time you receive an acceptance, complete this Accepted Google Form. Your school counselors want to celebrate with you.
GO SENIORS!!! Complete for EACH acceptance you receive this school year, then go to the Office to see Mrs. Tew for some candy :)
JUNIORS - Here is the link to the Junior Packet that was distributed at the Junior Meeting.
SOPHOMORES -
Tech Center tour (and date to start applying) will be held December 13th - this will be an opportunity for all 10th graders to visit each program. If a student is interested, applies, and is accepted (some programs fill up and there are waitlists), then NEXT school year, the student will be at the Tech Center program for 2 hours of the student’s schedule for the entire year (programs last the entire school year.) There is a bus that takes students to/from the Tech Center during the school day. Students/families can contact their school counselor with questions. Applications will be emailed to all 10th graders the day of the tour - a Google Form will be sent via their student email - anyone who is interested in applying should complete and submit. Application deadline is: Monday, December 19th.

School Lunch Account Info
Please keep in mind that school meals are not free to everyone this school year. Benefits are based on the meal application that is available for families to fill out. Meal balances are the responsibility of families to pay on a regular basis. Balances and spending habits of your student may be tracked using hopkins.familyportal.cloud. You may also deposit money on your student account (fees apply) if you choose not to send cash or check. Your student balance on familyportal is accurate up to the day; PowerSchool seems to be about 2 weeks behind on updating balances. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Hand2Hand Permission Slip Instructions
Dear Parent/Guardian:
We would like to offer your student the opportunity to participate in a program at Hopkins High School called “Hand2Hand”. This program helps provide a student with food for the weekends and is intended for families who currently may be experiencing a financial burden.
Here’s how Hand2Hand will work: At the end of the week students who are signed up for the program will receive a minimum of 10 food items in a black school logo drawstring bag that will be provided at the first week of participation. These food items will be a combination of breakfast, snacks, lunch and/or dinner items. While the food items are meant for the student, they can be shared among the family as well. (Please note: if your student or another family member has food allergies it will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to check the contents of the backpack each week to ensure the food doesn’t contain ingredients which could cause an allergic reaction).
There is no cost to participate! If you sign your student up to receive Hand2Hand, they will continue to receive the weekly bags each week they are at Hopkins High School. However, if down the road you no longer need the assistance, simply write a note expressing your desire to discontinue receiving Hand2Hand bags and give this note to the school office. This opportunity is being provided by LifeChange Community Church. To learn more about Hand2Hand, please visit their website: http://h2hkids.org.
If you feel your student would benefit from this opportunity, please complete the response form at the bottom of this letter and we will make sure that your student’s name is then added to the list. Your response will be kept confidential.
Sincerely,
Ken Szczepanski

Senior Grad Night Party
Big Buck Night is our biggest fundraiser for our grad night celebration and it is approaching fast. Please join us for a meeting on Wednesday, December 21, at 6:30. If you would consider helping or have already signed up, please join us. We will be discussing donations, workers needed, timeline, and discussing the details of the games, raffles, kitchen help etc., for those wishing to know exactly what they will be doing. We need you, just a two hour shift earns you $50 off your seniors fee, and a four hour shift will pay for their $100 balance in full. Please find and follow us on facebook at Hopkins Grad Night 2023 for all information and updates. Email us with any concerns or questions at info@hopkinsgradnightinc.org or Big Buck at hopkinsbigbucknight@gmail.com
