ALL Kindergarten students will be assessed for GT in early spring, so no referral is required. Currently enrolled students in grades 1-5 may be referred by parents or teachers for the HORIZONS program. Referrals must be received by the last school day in November in order for students to be assessed this school year. (In grades 1-5, testing is for services beginning in the 2024-25 school year. For Kindergarten, services will start in March, 2024. Attention all 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Parents/Guardians:

The 2023-2034 Spelling Bee Study List was sent home with your child today. This list was taken from the Scripps National Spelling Bee website. All students will participate in the Classroom Qualifying Test through their Language Arts classes next week. They will be tested on only 20 of the words from the list. (Note: this test will not be taken for a grade.) One student with the highest score from each homeroom in grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th will advance to our School Spelling Bee on December 1st. Student ID cards are provided by the district and used by all students for utilizing transportation services, making meal purchases, checking out library/textbooks, and identification of students in common areas. If the ID card is lost or damaged it must be promptly replaced. For ID cards that are lost or damaged due to the student's mishandling or negligence, there is a replacement fee.

If your student's ID card has been lost or damaged and must be replaced:

At Swenke we participate in (PBIS) which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE), the Technical Assistance Center on PBIS supports schools, districts, and states to build systems capacity for implementing a multi-tiered approach to social, emotional and behavior support. The broad purpose of PBIS is to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and equity of schools and other agencies. PBIS improves social, emotional and academic outcomes for all students, including students with disabilities and students from underrepresented groups.

When a student is absent, a signed parent/legal guardian note, or physician's note must be submitted to the campus attendance office within 3 days of the student's return to school. This note is to include the following information:

• Student's full name
• Date of absence
• Reason for absence
• Signature of parent/legal guardian

Acceptable excuse notes by email must include the above information along with a copy of the parent/legal guardian's ID. If a note is not provided, the absence will be counted as unexcused.

Deanna Swenke was selected as the namesake for Elementary #50. Swenke, who retired as the associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction in June 2008, spent 38 of her 44 years in education within CFISD
