Principal's Corner
We hope this newsletter finds you well and filled with enthusiasm for the ongoing academic journey of your child at Godwin Heights Middle School. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering partnership in making learning the top priority for every student.
High Expectations: A Foundation for Success
At Godwin Heights Middle School, we firmly believe that setting high expectations is the key to unlocking each student's full potential. We have witnessed remarkable achievements when students are challenged to reach for the stars. As we continue to raise the bar, we are confident that our students will not only meet but exceed these expectations.
Our dedicated team of educators is committed to fostering an environment where curiosity is encouraged, critical thinking is nurtured, and a love for learning is instilled. By setting the bar high, we empower our students to become lifelong learners, equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Continued Support: A Pillar of Success
We understand that the journey towards academic excellence requires more than just high expectations. It demands a strong support system, and we are proud to assure you that Godwin Heights Middle School is dedicated to providing continued support to every student.
Our teachers, counselors, and support staff work collaboratively to identify and address the unique needs of each student. Whether through one-on-one guidance, tailored lesson plans, or additional resources, we are committed to ensuring that every child receives the support they require to succeed academically and personally.
Once again, thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of nurturing and educating your child. Together, let's continue to make learning the priority and create an environment where every student can thrive.

School Counselor Appreciation Week
We celebrate Katie Golden during School Counselor Appreciation Week! She holds a degree in Spanish and History from MSU (Go Green!), and earned her Master's in Counseling from Oakland University in 2014. Kathryn's journey includes teaching high school Spanish until 2015, then moving to Grand Rapids to begin a career in Counseling at GHMS. She loves working at the middle school because every day is so different, and the students have great energy. Golden is available to our students for check-ins on grades, attendance, career and college planning, and social/emotional development. Don’t hesitate to reach out when needed at kathryn.golden@godwinschools.org or 616-252-2070. Thank you, Mrs. Golden, for your valuable contributions! 🌟

Today: Feeding America Food Truck
Located at Godwin Heights High School - 50 35th Street SW (4:45 - 6:00 pm)
Godwin Heights Public Schools has a proud partnership with Feeding America West Michigan. They provide mobile food truck pantries to our school district once a month.
At least 261,000 people in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula are food insecure—meaning they don't have consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. That's one in every 9 people.
Food insecurity exists for a variety of reasons, and anyone can experience a bout of it. Feeding America West Michigan, believes hunger is unacceptable and that their community has the power to change lives—one meal at a time. That’s why they've assembled a network of partners that they work alongside on their mission to relieve hunger and increase food security in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
Our Feeding America truck distributions are now every month on WEDNESDAYS.

Weekend Food Assistance Available
Exciting news! Hand2Hand signup is back for the 2nd semester at Godwin Heights Middle School. If your family could benefit from weekend food assistance, CLICK HERE to sign up.
How it works:
- Free and confidential participation.
- At the end of the week students who are signed up for the program will receive a minimum of 10 food items from the Hand2Hand pantry located on the school campus. These food items will be a combination of breakfast, snacks, lunch and/or dinner items. While the food items are meant for the student, they can be shared among the family as well. (Please note: if your student or another family member has food allergies it will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to check the food your student brings home each week to ensure the food doesn’t contain ingredients which could cause an allergic reaction).
To learn more about Hand2Hand, please visit their website: http://h2hkids.org.
FREE COVID Tests in Office
If students have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, they are asked to go home.
If students or staff are COVID positive and asymptomatic or well enough to return to school (No fever for 24 hours), a well-fitting mask is encouraged. Nothing is required.
If your child tests positive, please notify the building office. We are still required by health code to report positive cases as a communicable disease.
We have free COVID tests in the office, available for all interested staff and parents.
Parents Right to Know
As a Title One school, our building receives funding from the federal government to support instruction. In order to receive that funding, we must communicate specific information with our families. Linked below is a letter letting you know that, at any time, you may request information about the qualifications of the staff working in our building. If you have any questions regarding this process, please do not hesitate to reach out to our State and Federal Programs Director, Mary Lang.
