He pānui o te tumuaki - A note from Whaea Alicia
I am so grateful to you all for your support in all that we do at Kaikōura Suburban School. Your support for us (the kaimahi team) at Suburban is what helps us to offer our tamariki the best opportunities we can. The photos and stories that follow are evidence of how your support makes this happen. Thank you!
An initiative that was prompted by Quinn Bolton, who shared stories from his family, of days gone, by when there were Fish and Chip nights held at Suburban. Families could bring in their fish and chips and we have them together. In term 3 we will reinstate this tradition and have a fish and chip evening on Thursday the 28th of July. If you don't eat fish and chips yet wish to come along bring dinner and join us.
A big thank you to Judith Ford and her team at St Josephs school for organising the cross country this year. It was such a fabulous day. Also, a big thank you to Justine and Barry Schroder for hosting the event on their farm. The location and the course make the event so exciting for everyone. Thank you to Lloyd Morgan for directing traffic and to the Kaikōura Primary PTA for the great kai provided for sale on the day.
I cannot express enough how proud, we (the teaching team) are of our tamariki from Suburban. The FORCE values were so active on the day, the children cheered on one another, took care of each other and participated with full effort and fun. We had feedback from people outside the Suburban community of just how awesome our children were.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of taking our netball team to the Culverden Netball tournament and the team were brilliant. It has been a year of firsts for the team. The first time playing netball and their first tournament. The Suburban Force have been representing our school with pride, fun and great team spirit, well done.
During term break I am away for half of the time and some of our teaching team will be coming into school to feed Squeak (our school cat). She does get lonely over the holidays - so if you feel like heading into school to play on the fields, the playground or ride the bike track, please take sometime to call out to Squeak and give her some affection, she really misses us.
Hei kōna koutou katoa - see you all after the holidays. I hope you have exciting adventures.

Whale Run 2022 Update
Whale Run Committee Update
So far Madeline our committee admin has contacted all of the competitors who had entered the previous events which were postponed due to covid and she has confirmed 63 entries, which is fabulous, thank you Madeline. We continue to get new entries now and as we re activate our marketing strategies we expect the entries to start flowing in.
The team has recently done a stocktake of all of our physical resources and we are gathering quotes for our T Shirt stocks and timing systems.
We have a number of logistics planning in place including traffic and road controls, marshalling stations, waste management and toilets etc. We are also planning to make the marafun - which is our children's event into an event similar to the Kaikōura warrior race - which was like a fun obstacle course for the children. Watch this space - we hope to have as many of our Suburban tamariki join this event as we can.
We are looking for help with:
- marshalls
- people to run drink stations
- a person to wear the Harold costume and do the mara fun run
- people to run the individual cake and food stall, a sausage sizzle
- sponsors
- spot prize donations
- an offer of 4 wheel motorbike to run between marshalling points
Please contact either Madeline Lloyd at: whalerun@ks.school.nz or myself Alicia Poroa at principal@ks.school.nz ph: 02102468839 for enquiries.
