Adjustments to HCPSS Calender
Dear Atholton Families,
We have a shortened week this week with school closed for students on Tuesday. Additionally, due to our inclement weather days, the Board of Education made adjustments to our academic calendar:
Monday, February 21 (President’s Day) is now a FULL SCHOOL DAY. It will be designated a B-day.
Monday, June 20 all schools and offices will be closed.
The last day of school has yet to be determined as we are still in the winter seasaon and more inclement weather may be expected.
You may find all of the changes to the HCPSS calendar here.
Last Friday, we instituted our first “Hall Sweep” as we have noticed students not arriving to class on time. Our initiative is the result of what we have noticed as an increasingly unfortunate trend of tardiness to class and late arrival to school. As we begin Quarter 3 (second semester), the Administration visited social studies classes to review expectations and answer questions from students as a mid-year check-in. During our visits, we reviewed late to school and tardy to class procedures.
Students are expected to be in class at 7:25 am. Arriving to school 10 minutes earlier allows students to get to class on time and settle into their day. The largest amount of traffic occurs after 7:10 am. Your cooperation is necessary by getting your student here for school to start on time without interruptions.
It is always nice to highlight some of the great things taking place in our school community. Congratulations to James Obasiolu (9th grade) who was the 2nd place winner for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest The contest was open to all Howard County Middle and High School students and the question to be answered was: What can be done to foster an inclusive culture in your school, community, or organization?
Additionally, congratulations to our outstanding drama department as Atholton Theatre was recognized by Howard Magazine as the Best of Howard. Mr. Rosen, our drama teacher, our outstanding drama students, and the wonderful support of our drama boosters are to be commended for this high honor.
Lastly, a final reminder that the HCPSS Summer School online enrollment will open Tuesday, February 1 at 6 p.m. and remain open through Tuesday, February 15 at 6 p.m..They will open registration back up each month. Program descriptions, dates, times and locations will be located HERE
Spots will fill up fast so don't delay! Please consider summer school if you are not passing a course or need to make up credit. If you have any questions, contact your school counselor.
Wishing everyone a fantastic upcoming week!
Warmest regards,
Robert A. Motley
