Youth and Government
On October 28th and 29th, a delegation of SM North students attended the 2019 Youth and Government event in Topeka. The conference is open for any sophomores, juniors and seniors who have a strong interest in politics.
Students began their preparation with faculty sponsor, Mrs. Kayte Cormack in August, and conducted research in order to write their own bill. During the two day conference, students debated the bills that they had written in the actual chambers of the House and Senate at the Kansas Capitol building.
The eight students in the North delegation represented themselves and our school very well. Several individuals also were recognized by their peers and conference leadership at the conclusion of the event. Senior Mason Trout and junior Hananeel Morinville were among the seven students recognized as “Outstanding Statesmen” at the conference. Miss Morinville and fellow junior, Glory Obi, were both elected for two of the four student leadership positions for the 2020 conference. Miss Morinville will serve as the Speaker of the House, and Miss Obi as the President of the Senate.
The remaining students that completed the North delegation included seniors Kevin Lopez, Brian Pendleton, and Rory Smith, as well as sophomores Samantha Morinville and OreOluwa Oni. A special thank you again to all of these students, they truly did an amazing job.

Ecomeet at Erie Miller Nature Center
Future ecologists from Shawnee Mission North participated in the Ecomeet at Ernie Miller Nature Center on Wednesday, October 30th. We fielded four teams. Participants included Phil Anstine, Audrey Brandt, Kiley Kimber, Katie Wilburn, Greta Burg, Therese Bichelmeyer, Daniel Edson, Morgan Kramer, Mya Beets, Jalyn French, Alexia Sabala, Hannah Westermayer, Luis Chavez, Jocelyn Dahn, Dylan Deathe, and Jordyn Kelley.
Teams competed in 4 events: a 100 question Kansas Ornithology test, a 100 question Kansas Woodlands test, a 20 minute indoor scavenger hunt for native plant species, and a 5 minute interpretive skit. We battled against teams from SM South, Blue Valley, Gardner, and Tonganoxie. 50 students formed 13 teams.
The results: SMN Team D took 2nd place in the interpretive event. Team B took 4th place overall, barely missing an opportunity to go to the state competition in Hesson, KS on November 7th. However, for the first time in North history one student took 2nd place on the Woodlands test: Greta Berg! She qualified for state and will be competing against the top 18 students in Kansas for a scholarship. Congrats to Greta!
