The Pulse of the Pride
August 19th, 2022

October 7, 2022
Lyme School Friends,
It is October! We have had another fantastic week here at school. We are into the routine of school now and it is clear we all know our way around our schedule. Blisters for Books was a success and it was great to see staff decked out in their Lyme/running gear for the day in celebration of this event.
We are gearing up for Open House and I know teachers have been working hard hosting virtual events to give you a sense of their classroom and curriculum. I appreciate their willingness to host these events for you and be here for Open House on the 13th for you to visit the School.
This week was a short week at school with a teacher in-service day today. Our teachers have been hard at work and Mrs. Foxall explains what we did today if you are interested a bit further down in the newsletter.
It was suggested we highlight the important stuff in the newsletter, as it is a comprehensive newsletter. We just wanted to mention that the first section is the essential information and announcements. We have now included an important dates section to call out special events. As always, we appreciate feedback to improve our newsletter and communication home.
Please remember, we do not have school on Monday. The next Pulse will hit your inbox on October 21st. Have a fantastic long weekend and we will see you back at school on Tuesday, October 11th!
Best,
John P. D'Entremont, Principal

Hello Lyme Families!
Now that it is October, I am back in the building full time. Very grateful that I was able to spend the last few months with my daughter before she headed off to daycare.
Our WISE educators once again had a great time with our Lyme students - they were so happy to start their school programming with such a fun, bright, inquisitive, and respectful group!
Here is what we’ll be discussing/working on in K-5th grade over the next few weeks during weekly Stanton Time:
Kindergarten - Whole Body Listening/Intro to Expected and Unexpected Behaviors
First Grade - Bucket Filling/Dipping - Review Expected/Unexpected Behaviors
Second Grade - Bucket Filling/Dipping Part 2/Responsibility (Lyme School Value!)
Third Grade - Growth Mindset/Self-Compassion and Positive Self-Talk
Fourth Grade - Stanton Time Challenges/Team & Community Building
Fifth Grade - Stanton Time Challenges Pt 2/Team & Community Building Pt 2
I am so excited to be back in the classroom learning and growing with these amazing students!
Have a wonderful long weekend, and as always, please reach out if you need anything!
Best,
Rachel

Teaching and Learning by Mrs. Foxall
What do we do on in-service days?
Our teachers and assistants have a busy schedule for the October 7th in-service!
Ten staff members are participating in a Crisis Response/Prevention Intervention training with Geoff Tomlinson, our Director of Student Services. This training focuses on verbal de-escalation strategies that help children who become dysregulated to make safe choices, maintain their dignity, and get back on track in the classroom.
Lower School teachers (Grades K-4) are taking part in a training to learn to administer the Universal Screener for Number Sense. Number sense is the ability to be flexible with numbers. It helps children understand both how our number system works, and how numbers relate to each other. Children who develop number sense have a range of mathematical strategies at their disposal. The Universal Screener for Number Sense screener is a quick interview-based assessment that will help to identify skills and concepts that indicate readiness for grade level content, as well as identify students who would benefit from additional supports.
Middle school teachers and our specialists are revisiting our K-8 technology competencies and taking a close look at our students’ strengths and areas for growth in technology. Teachers are discussing where they see some of our tech skills best integrated into our curriculum. Teachers are also updating their subject curriculum maps to reflect where inquiry and research are taking place in their classrooms. They will have the opportunity to plan cross curricular activities and projects that involve tech skills and/or inquiry with the specialists. This is a precious time when our specialists and academic teachers can plan together!
Our all staff afternoon meeting is an informative session about Alma, a new student information system.

Music Update by Ms. O'Leary
This week 5th grade broke out the glockenspiels! We will be using the instrument to apply and practice the musical scale and reading notes on the Treble Staff. Students can expect to practice note reading, improvisation, and composing with the glockenspiels.
October is Country Music Month! This week, Elementary classes were introduced to common Country and Bluegrasses instruments and the genre's long and rich history. Each week, student's learn about a composer or a musician relating to our month's theme. This week, students learned a bit about Country music star Johnny Cash and enjoyed a video of him performing "Ring of Fire". It has been a hit amongst students and staff! Feel free to follow the link and enjoy watching at home!
Digital Music Production received their results from the Battle of the Collabs rubric project! Group 3 had the highest ranking scores amongst the teacher rubrics and Group 2 amongst the student rubrics. Their work is attached for you to hear. Great job to everyone!
Art News by Mrs. Girdwood
Session 1 of Middle School Electives wrapped up this week. In Drawing Elective, students worked to build their drawing skills through value exercises and understanding how to look closely at the relationships between all the parts of an image. They hatched and they cross-hatched. They stippled and scumbled. They discussed core shadows and reflected highlights and got smudges of drawing charcoal on their faces. This last drawing, though…they struggled ….and then hung in there. It felt like I blinked, and suddenly they all had it. They worked with purpose and pride and they understood what it felt like to get to the other side of a good drawing.
Grade 6 gives tips on managing stress
As the sixth graders recently learned in health, stress affects both one’s mental and physical well-being . Learning ways to cope and manage stress are important and having tools that we can use when we are feeling stressed can certainly help!
From exercising to reading books,
listening to music, and talking to someone you trust, such as a caregiver, teacher, friend, or counselor are healthy ways to not let stress get in your way.
Life can get hectic but thanks to the sixth graders, there are tips to follow to help us feel better when we are feeling overwhelmed or anxious . Thanks, sixth grade!
Outdoor Adventure Elective by Ms. Pizarro
7th and 8th grade students in the Outdoor Adventure Elective summited Mount Moosilauke in beautiful fall conditions last Tuesday. The trip was the culmination of our elective course, which focused on trip planning and team building. Students researched and proposed various hiking trips before settling on Moosilauke as the goal. I am particularly proud of our adventuring group for showing excellent “expedition behavior”, leading to a trip atmosphere that was positive, supportive, and fun.
Design Lab Download: A long a winding road by Mr. Betournay
"A challenge is a chance to grow"...and learn practical science and engineering skills. The past couple weeks, lower school classes have had their ups and downs while designing, building and testing marble roller coasters. To construct a fun and successful half-pipe marble coaster (works every time), students must rapidly test and refine their designs. Students had so much fun they hardly noticed that they were learning science and engineering by acting like scientists and engineers. Learning through play is the best way.

Lyme Ski Program
Just wanted to send out a reminder to everyone so there's no confusion about how the lyme ski program works....
Early dismissal is @ 1:30 for those in the program, who are bused to the skiway where their equipment is waiting for them - more details on how that happens later.
It is held during the 1st 6 thursday's of the year with the last Thursday before Winter break as a make-up day. The program will end when vacation starts.
Your child will have to have a skiway season pass - can be bought online (link: https://dartmouth.resortstore.net/en/catalogue/lyme-resident-child-season-pass_30/) Note that the processing fee for this pass is $25 through the end of October, after that it goes to $50. If your child doesn't have a pass and signs up for the lyme ski program they will need to bring $10 for a ticket for every day they attend......so getting a pass is a no-brainer!
There will also be lyme ski program rentals, more on that later but very inexpensive. You can also get season long rentals at the skiway now!!!
Please be advised that the Lyme Ski Program has nothing to do with any programs offered by the Skiway Snowsports School programs.
Hope this helps you plan for the upcoming winter!
Thanks and think snow (after today of course) - Steve
