Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
~ Provided to our community by the Lancer Library
In 1968, President Johnson issued the first proclamation honoring Hispanic Americans. Initially, the celebration was a week long, and always included September 15 and 16 - the anniversaries of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua (all 9/15), and Mexico (9/16).
In 1988, Congress amended the earlier law, to make the celebration a 31 day period, beginning September 15 and ending on October 15. National Hispanic Heritage Month is a period meant for recognition, education, and celebration for the positive impact that Hispanic Americans have made on our country.
TOHS and our local Conejo community have a variety of resources for members of the Hispanic Community. You'll find more information about them below, along with a collection of interesting websites to help bring awareness to Hispanic Heritage Month.
The Lancer Library will also be showcasing a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books this month to celebrate the Hispanic American experience - stop by to check one (or more) out and follow us on Twitter @TOLancerLibrary or Insta @tolancerlibrary to get daily book recommendations for Hispanic Heritage Month.
