Saint Bridget School: a Catholic community that encourages a love of God, respect for all, and academic excellence.
Principal's Notes
I hope everyone had a nice weekend. I'm glad that we were generally spared of the major threats from hurricane Lee, and hope everyone made out well. This week we will be reviewing with students our safety practices for various emergencies. We use a color coded system established by the Town of Abington that dictates certain actions related to various emergent scenarios, such as shelter in place, or evacuation. Practicing for these scenarios is an important part of our safety plan. In addition, all students will be participating in a bus evacuation drill on Wednesday.
Rebecca Asack Day - Please see the notice below!
Tuesdays Together - this coming Tuesday is our first "Tuesdays Together" for the school year. Students in grades K - 8 gather in the church for singing, prayer and a lesson. This is a community building initiate we began last school year. All families are welcome to join us, we begin around 8:30 and end by 9 am.
Morning Drop Off Update - If you missed the message on Friday, here is a link to what was sent out. https://www.smore.com/v56y4.
Early Release Day on Thursday - All students will be dismissed beginning at 11:10 am on Thursday. A reminder that all early release days are free dress down days. It is an early release day so that Teachers can work with School Resource Officers reviewing ALICE, a safety protocol related to intruders.
I hope everyone one has a great week and I hope to see a good turn out at tomorrow nights PTO Meeting, 6:30 pm in the school cafeteria.
All my best,
Matthew Collins
Principal

Teacher Spotlight! ~ Mrs. Lori Shatkin, Grade 1 Teacher
First grade is an exciting time because this is the year that students learn to read! In Mrs. Shatkin’s first grade classroom they are working on sounding out, reading, and spelling short vowel a words such as at, bat, and man. First, Mrs. Shatkin led the students in some sound awareness exercises. Students sounded out words using multi-sensory techniques. Students tapped out the sounds of words on their arms, jumped with the sounds, and air wrote the words. Next, they completed a sound fluency exercise by practicing a list of sounds. Next, the students used highlighters to tap out the letters in short a words in their short a booklets. Finally, students played a game called “Roll and Read” in which they rolled a dice and read the word on a game board.
Multi-sensory instruction is a way of teaching by engaging more than one sense at a time. Multisensory activities are based in whole brain learning. The best way to teach concepts is by involving multiple areas in the brain. When the first graders are jumping and tapping to the sounds in words they are using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic senses. The benefits of multisensory learning to teach reading have been verified by contemporary research in brain science.
