From the Superintendent
West Irondequoit CSD update from Aaron Johnson
MAY 2, 2022
Dear Families,
As shared in my last update, with the COVID-related communication tapering off, please plan for regular updates from me near the beginning of each month. May begins with a tribute to our mothers and caregivers. I once read that a mother or guardian's love endures through all. It has been a tough few years. Thank you to our mothers and guardians for being there for every step (Happy Mother's Day this Sunday)!
This week is Staff Appreciation Week. Throughout the year, our staff digs deep to pour itself into every child. The cheerful connections and personal care they give are genuine, and the students feel it. We are blessed to have the best. Please take a moment to pass along your feelings to them if you agree. In addition, the staff is being well cared for with treats throughout the week, thanks to our incredible PTSA.
Please see below for more shoutouts and updates, including an important one on reporting COVID cases. Spring is here and will quickly turn to summer. With it comes the return of most year-end events. We're excited to have them back in person to enjoy them together. See you there!
In partnership,
Aaron R. Johnson, Ed. D
Superintendent of Schools

- Senior Candace Tytler was named Female High School Athlete of the Year by the Rochester Press-Radio Club and boys basketball coach Chris Cardon also will be honored on June 1.
- For the 15th straight year, our district earned the distinction as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in America.
- Co-Coaches Ranita Williams and Floyd Gibson kickoff the first-ever season of girls flag football with 17 players on the roster. (video)
- Decision Day at IHS was today! (Facebook photo gallery)
Click the links for more. Thanks to the community of its support. There is much more happening across our 10 schools. Congratulations to these individuals and everyone striving for peak performance!
NEW WAY TO REPORT COVID CASES
The case numbers of COVID-19 remain high. Monitoring symptoms and testing as needed is helping to safeguard the health in our schools. People are reporting and staying home to protect themselves and others. A new development: How to report results. The Monroe County Department of Public Health is no longer providing contact tracing. NYS had previously provided staffing for this, but that was removed.
Instead, families and staff must report cases directly to the school using THIS LINK. We also have a box on the home page of the District site with a link to report cases. Throughout the pandemic, our nurses have been nothing short of amazing. They remain here for support and guidance, don't hesitate to contact them for advice. You can still find district-wide case numbers on THIS PAGE.
JOIN US: FLAG RAISING CEREMONY WEDNESDAY
To learn more about this work, please read our special publication, "Honoring Irondequoit's Indigenous Roots," at this link. A copy of that will be mailed to residents later this month. We will offer another virtual Town Hall learning opportunity later this month on Tuesday, May 24, at 7 PM to hear from local Indigenous people during our next Community Connections. Please join us.
