Student Placement 2023-2024
Over the next few months, we will begin the process of assigning students to an appropriate class for next year. In putting together the classes, we will take into consideration many factors: girl/boy ratio, academic ability, behavioral characteristics, talents, personalities, emotional needs and learning styles. Our goal is to ensure that each child is in a class that has an appropriate balance of students with the proper teacher. We assess each child's individual needs based upon input from the present classroom teacher, student support counselor, reading specialist, and principal.
Class placement is made after reviewing a considerable amount of data. If you feel that we would benefit from additional information, you are welcome to send an email directly to me at kcarter@cbsd.org by May 1st. Consider describing a classroom environment that would be beneficial to your son/daughter. In addition, share any information regarding academic, social or emotional information that you would like us to consider. You should not name a specific teacher. District staffing is not complete until June and teaching assignments may change. While parents are welcome to name a few close friends to be placed with their child, only one friend who is named can be guaranteed. Please use this opportunity to speak to your child's strengths and needs. Please note: requests for specific teachers, or requesting the gender of the teacher, will not be considered.
Knowing that children's strengths and needs, as well as friendships, vary from year to year, all previous year's requests are not considered. If there is information that was previously requested, that you would like noted for the 2023-2024 school year, use this opportunity to restate that information.
We want what is best for your child and that involves them having a wide variety of educational experiences. You are not required to send an email; however I welcome your input. Parents will learn of class placement in August. Emails sent after May 1st will not be considered.
Thank you,
Kelly Carter
Human Growth and Development Lessons
In May, 5th and 6th grade students will be studying a health unit on Human Growth and Development within their classroom. Prior to instruction, we ask for parent/guardian written permission for your child to participate in these programs. For a variety of reasons, some parents prefer not to have their child participate in these lessons.
So that we may be guided by your wishes, a CBSD email will be sent next week with instructions on the process for participation. Thank you.
Mustang of the Day Winners
Everyday one Gayman staff member selects one student to be our "Mustang of the Day"! Students are selected for demonstrating one of the "Gayman 5" character traits: respect, responsibility, kindness, perseverance, and cooperation.
Congratulations to...Callan Murphy, Teagan Sorenson, Mason Etter and Clara Fox.
PSSA Information
The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires all school districts to administer PSSA testing for the 2022-23 school year. The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment is aligned with the PA Standards. The English Language Arts and Mathematics PSSAs are administered in grades 3 through 8 and the Science PSSA is administered in grade 4 and grade 8. The specific dates for the English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science Assessment are listed below.
- April 24th, 25th, & 26th: English Language Arts for Grades 3-6
- May 1st and 2nd: Mathematics for Grades 3-6
- May 3rd and 4th: Science for Grade 4
Students learn all skills, concepts, and content necessary to take the assessment within their daily reading, writing, mathematics and science instruction. These assessments are critically important; please encourage your child to do their best. The results will be one of the measures we use as we make curricular updates and revisions. Individual performance will be one of the factors we consider when determining which students need additional support or enrichment.
More information about this state exam can be found on the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Website.
Thank you, Gayman Home and School Association!

Each student who submits their work will have at least one piece included and published in our spring issue! Beginning the week of April 10th, each teacher will have a large manilla envelope in his or her classroom for collecting Muse submissions.
