Attendance-Did you know?
Every quarter, we send an attendance report to the state. With our limited face to face time, our attendance report is determined by considering face to face instructional hours in addition to online learning hours.
This means that it is imperative that:
- students are present to face to face instructional time at the learning center
- students are engaged on K12.com regularly
- learning coaches are logging online and offline learning time, weekly (6-9th grade only logs offline learning time)
The state requirement of learning hours in one year from Rule 10
K-8th grade: 1,032 hours/year
9+: 1,080 hours/year
So?
To put this in perspective, below is the breakdown of required hours/quarter for a FULL-TIME student, who is expected to work 6 hours/day (see table page 24 in OVS handbook or in image below). Part-time students should expect to be engaged for an hour/day for each course. Please note, these hours don't need to be completed daily, they can be completed anytime during the week, it is easier to explain in this manner.
Kindergarten-8th grade students
Q1 total days = 44 x 6 hours/day = 264 total hours/quarter
Q2 total days= 41 x 6 hours/day = 246 total hours
Q3 total days = 41 x 6 hours/day = 246 hours
Q4 total days = 48 x 6 hours/day = 288 hours
Total school days/year = 173 days
Total hours/year = 1,044
What does this mean for you?
ALL learning coaches need to log their student's offline instructional time on K12 for attendance purposes. Examples of offline hours are: writing a paper on Microsoft Word, completing handwriting in a workbook, painting a picture for art, doing PE stretches/activities, reading a novel for their novel unit, researching an animal online for a research project. Any work that is NOT on K12.com is considered offline.
K-5th grade learning coaches need to log online work on K12 as well.
How can we help you?
We are devising a plan to send reminders to parents to log hours and to let parents know if their student's engagement is not on track to meet the quarterly progress. We will be handing out half sheets to full-time students to show parents what student's logged for the first quarter, just so you have a frame of reference.
Tips to make this manageable:
- Create a calendar for learning time for students to write down their minutes, and log this weekly.
- Have a calendar for YOU to keep track of learning time (if you have younger students), and log this weekly.
- We have devices available for learning coaches to use during class time, you can log your weekly time while your student is learning.

Assembly Message: Empathy and Kindness
As part of our empathy message, our Synergy group is hosting a fundraiser in conjunction with "Wonder" the movie. For any tickets bought through filmraiser.com for the opening weekend of November 17-19th, proceeds will go back to the school. Tell your family and friends to check it out!
Robotics Club Fundraiser
As we try to build our robotics program, we are constantly seeking ways to get funds and equipment. This allows us to build the course, obtain the tools, and have extra parts. We have been very lucky to have a couple OPS departments donate 4 robots and 1 course. However, we are lacking a course for both styles of robots and tools to precisely build the robots. We now have a new way to raise money and get something in return!
We are now offering OVS Robotics shirts! These shirts were designed by a parent (Carl Muller) and represent the fun atmosphere of our robotics program. Using the link, you can purchase shirts for yourselves. The prices are a little higher than a normal shirt order as this is a fundraiser and we are also printing two sides on the shirt.
Orders will close on November 14th and the shirts should arrive by December 1st. Short and long sleeve options are available. Money earned from these shirts will be used to purchase course materials, robotics parts, and tools. Having the proper tools and materials is vital in a successful program.

This week the students were introduced to Study Island. Study Island is another tool that we can use to practice skills. We read The Gruffalo and practiced retelling the story by creating an algorithm. Students were also able to use Osmo Words to practice reading and spelling CVC words. Check out the OSMO learning games here.
Looking Ahead:
School Pictures
We will have Art with Ms. Barry.
Next week we will continue to focus on mastering addition facts and collecting data. We will also work on retelling and story sequence.
See you on Monday for Class Connect!
Mr. Dowling's Classroom
Ms. Nommensen's Classroom
It was so wonderful to see you all at conferences! The kids are making so much progress and are just a delight! We are working on nonfiction in 4th grade and enjoying learning about using the different elements to dig deeper in our books. Our 5th graders are working on making predictions and inferences using Rip Van Winkle. They are really getting good at knowing the difference between inferences and predictions! In math, we are continuing exploring angles and decimals in the different grade levels. They are becoming math master’s in these areas! I’m super impressed with their hard work!
Next week we will continue with science! Please remember to bring in your folders with 1-2 pieces of graded work for the grade book. Please have the student’s name, the type of work (math, ELA, science, social studies), and the grade that they earned. You can write a percentage or how many they got right out of how many possible. Thank you so much for sending the work in so your children can get credit for their hard work!
