CVU Celebrations
May 5, 2023
Dear CVU Community: Parents and Caregivers, I probably don’t need to tell you that May and early June are PACKED with events–particularly if you are balancing multiple students across schools (when is someone going to invent CVUber?). For those who have graduates, this is a particularly emotional period as the balance extends beyond demands on time to the balance of adolescents who have one foot firmly planted in independence and one foot in the world of childhood (hint: some conflict is pretty normal as we adjust the scales). The good news is that most of our May/June events are geared to slow us down into reflection, connection, and celebration. See some of those events below:
One Acts: Come see the CVU student-directed One Act Plays on Friday, May 5 at 7:00 pm, Saturday, May 6 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, May 7 at 1:00 pm. Support your friends and fellow hawks in this drama and comedy duo. You’re sure to be entertained! This year students will perform two One Acts - Hamlet and the Actor’s Nightmare.
Senior Time Line: Use this document to see ALL of the important end-of-year dates for seniors. It is a live link and may be updated as we near graduation.
Exit Experience: Keep an eye on your inboxes for an invite to senior Exit Experiences on May 19. Seniors and their fellow senior advisees will reflect on their journey to, through, and beyond CVU.
Speaking of celebration, a big thanks goes to Friends of CVU who honored our Educator Appreciation Week (which is everyone who works in a school)!
Upcoming Events
5/1-5/12 - AP Exams
5/1 - Rising Juniors - Junior Parking Lottery Opens
5/5-5/7 - Student-Directed One Act Plays
5/13 - Prom
5/19 - Exit Experiences
Student Celebrations
From Ava Rohrbaugh - Below is a picture of the clothing swap held on Thursday before break. It was a huge success and thank you to all the donators who made this event so fantastic!
From Jennifer Marriott - Below are some photos from our field trip to Hot Yoga Burlington on Friday, 4/21. We took a Restorative Yoga class with the owner Bill O’Connell and had the pleasure of being serenaded by his acoustic guitar skills.
Student Poets in the Burlington Free Press
Three of our students' works were published in the Burlington Free Press last week: Sylvia Chapman, Clark Clark and Rose Lord.
Every Little Thing Club performed random acts of cleaning and tidying this week.
From Amy Wardwell - On Thursday, April 20, the Holocaust and Modern Genocide class welcomed Shelburne resident Tom Glaser to class. Tom is the child of Viktor and Daisy Glaser - two survivors of the Holocaust. Tom speaks with students around the state about his parents' experiences in order to preserve this history and memorialize the 11 million victims of the Holocaust- which include much of his extended family.
If you would like to hear Tom's full presentation please check out this virtual recording Tom did for the VT Holocaust Memorial last January on Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Unified Athletes and fans were treated to some excellent ice cream on a very cold, rainy day.
From Brad Miller: Our own Corey Wemple had a feature on NBC local news on Thursday, April 13. As usual, he represented our community with poise!
Sam Kunin performed as a musician for the Maas grand slam at the Flynn theater on April 29th. He had a unique opportunity to be roasted by the host!
Digital Photography and Darkroom Photography students have an exhibit of their work on display in the CVU Gallery Space (between the back entrance to the Library and the Learning Center). Please stop by to enjoy their work and read their artist's statements about their artistic process.
CVU Advanced Photography students have an exhibit of their work at the Pierson Library in Shelburne. Each member of the class selected a favorite work from the semester to add to this exhibit. Some students have been working with the process of darkroom photography while others have been working with digital photography. The varied work reflects the range of techniques and themes the students have explored this semester.
Several CVU students entered work in the 2nd Annual Vermont Wildlife Education Fund Student Art Competition. Sonia Prada received 1st Place in the contest while Eva Fewell received an Honorable Mention. Morgan Ackerly, Aren Eisenman, Lily Gruber, and Yvonne Miceler also participated in the contest this year. You can view their entries on the Vermont Wildlife Education website.
CVU Junior Sonia Prada was awarded 1st Place at the

The Art and Activism club has installed an interactive artwork in the Library. The piece focuses on concerns around the changing climate and how that is impacting the snowfall in Vermont and thus the industries dependent on that snow accumulation. Students can walk through the snowflake veil and read information about the impact this change is having locally. Over the next two weeks Art and Activism students will slowly remove the flakes until nothing is left. Enjoy it while you still can...
Our faculty and staff were treated to the jazz stylings of our favorite band! Thank you to Connor, Sam, and Ethan.
Jack was the final victor in the biggest game of C3 Knockout ever!
Community Skills hooked up Mother Earth and took part in Greening Up Hinesburg today. Thanks to everyone who came out and participated!
From Magali Simon-Martin: French II students enjoyed a traditional French breakfast with great enthusiasm.
Marisa Kono will be the featured soloist this Sunday, May 7th at 3:00pm at the Flynn Theater performing the Dvorak’s Romance for Violin and Orchestra. This concert will also be the last concert for over 30 seniors in the VYO, close to half of those 30 are from CVU.
Check out the amazing travel opportunities for next school year! Applications are due May 18th.

Faculty/Staff Celebrations
The best part about Educator Appreciation Week is that we get to thank EVERYONE! Thank you, everyone, for making CVU a special place.
As part of Kindness Week, on Friday, 4/21 students showed their appreciation for Faculty/Staff with chalk art.
From John Bennett-
Many thanks and appreciation to Anthony Spagnolo, Ricky McCollum, Katie Mack, and Stan Williams for sharing their experience, knowledge and insights to panel discussions for my U.S. in the World- Sports classes.

The Actor's Nightmare is a short comic play by Christopher Durang. It involves an accountant named George Spelvin (played by junior Nate McNabb), who is mistaken for an actor's understudy and forced to perform in a play for which he does not know any of the lines. Directed by seniors Gabby Lindenmeyr, Ian Story, and Eric Carroll, this show is sure to get a laugh out of you!

Vermont will be issuing a final round of Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefits for Summer 2023. All students at our school qualify for a Summer P-EBT benefit of $120 per student. This is because of the way that we are offering free school meals to all students this year.
The benefit will be sent to the head of household and the mailing address that we have on file for your student. If you have moved or need to update the head of household, please let us know by Wednesday, May 10th. To make changes, please contact your child's House Office Administrative Assistant.
These benefits will be sent out by mid-August. If your student missed school for a COVID-related reason between February 2023 and May 11, 2023, you will receive benefits for those days at the same time.
Please see Frequently‐Asked Questions (FAQs) About School Pandemic EBT (P‐EBT) for more information. If you need to request a new card or have more questions about P-EBT, visit https://dcf.vermont.gov/esd/P-EBT or call 1‐800‐479‐6151, option 7.
It's Employee Appreciation time of year in our district! We invite you to use the CVSD Kudos button on Let's Talk to share a positive shout-out for any employee. We will make sure it gets to them!
