Laker Anchor
March 6, 2023
Greetings, Laker Families-
Well, March has come “in like a lion:...but will it go “out like a lamb?” We are hoping so! With the spring equinox on Monday, March 20, the weather has two weeks to turn the corner. As we cross our fingers and think happy thoughts for some warmer, more spring-like weather, the students are super excited for the installation of our new Big Toy equipment!
3/6-3/17 – The Big Toy will be closed for the installation of the addition. The Big Toy area has been blocked off for safety. If you allow your children to play on school grounds after hours, please remind them to stay off the Big Toy. THANK YOU again for all your support with fundraisers over the past couple of years to allow the PTA to purchase this very FUN addition to our play structure!
On Friday, March 10, our PTA is bringing the “pay it forward” Ned’s Mindset assembly to Emerald Hills for all K-5 students (because it is an all school assembly, we will not have room for guests).
**NOTE: A handout will be sent home with each student at the end of the day on March 10 so that families have the OPTION of purchasing a yo yo for their child to support the “pay it forward” assembly. The yo yo order form and payment can be sent back with your student on 3/13, 3/14 or 3/15. Students will also have the opportunity to practice in the “Ned Zone” at recess on those days with their newly purchased Yo Yos. Super exciting, especially with the Big Toy being closed!! 🙂
Quoted from the Ned’s Mindset teacher/parent/student resource link above:
Did you know most schools get our program at no cost?
When a school chooses the Pay-It-Forward option, they receive NED's Mindset Mission assembly and all of our resources without paying a fee. In return, the school runs a Pay-It-Forward sale. Each school's effort at selling NED gear, like yo-yos, makes it possible for our program to visit the next school. Schools appreciate getting a valuable program that doesn't affect their budget. Kids love having a hands-on activity that helps them put NED's message in motion. Parents are happy to see their kids engaged in a non-electronic toy that spans across generations.
This “growth mindset” assembly is perfect timing for our 3rd-5th graders! They have begun preparing for the spring state math and reading SBA. 5th graders are also preparing for the state science assessment (WCAS). Please watch for more specific communication about testing days from the 3rd-5th grade teachers as we get into the spring. NOTE: As you schedule family vacations and appointments for your children, please keep in mind that students will need to be present during our SBA testing window which will be May 15 - June 2.
Important Safety Reminder
We have observed an increasing number of dogs joining their owners on school grounds when dropping off and picking up their children. As a reminder, pets should remain leashed at all times (even when walking in the front field) to ensure safety. Because the comfort level of students around pets varies, it is important that all pets remain close to their owners. Thank you!
