TENNIS: Congrats to the Team Tennis for their 8th consecutive undefeated District Championship. TWHS won Bi-District, as well, with a convincing 19-0 win over the Nimitz Cougars on Tuesday. The Highlanders will play Cy-Woods on Thursday, 10/14 @ Bridgeland.

Team Tennis is aiming to make regionals for the 17th straight year potential regional quater-final will be Monday, 10/18 @ Klein High School vs the Oak Ridge/Klein Oak winner.

SWIM AND DIVE: The Woodlands Swim and Dive team competed Thursday at CISD Natatorium against Stratford winning 22 out of 24 events. The Hammer Down award winners were Zoe N., Maria U., Kiera G., Niya G, Regina L, Camilla A, Aidan F, CJ S, Thyn V, Vignesh K, and Jacob J.

Come out and support the swim team this Saturday at Kingwood at 9:30. Go Big Wood!

CROSS COUNTRY: Recent XC events included the Nike South Invitational Meet with outstanding results by both the Girls and Boys Teams (Boys Elite Champs, Girls Elite Runner Up, Boys Varsity Champs, Girls Varsity Runner Up, Boys JV Champs, Girls JV Champs, Freshman Boys Runner Up) and the annual Red/Green Race! Competition was extremely close last Friday evening for the R/G: 6 races, 3 wins each, PRs (34 to 39) were used to determine the winner - kudos to the Green Team for the 2021 victory!! Championship season is upon us...the District Meet is TODAY at Misty Meadows. Go Highlanders!!

BOYS BASKETBALL: Boys Basketball will be having their tryouts on Saturday October 30th at the main campus from 9-11am. Students trying out must have a current physical in order to tryout. Highly recommended to be passing all classes.

Any senior who hasn't submitted applications has a lot of work to do this weekend, there are FAFSA information sessions you can attend (in-person at Caney Creek HS) or virtually at the end of this month, and students should plan to attend our mini-college fair next Thursday during all lunches (it will be set up in the hallways near the cafeteria).

Welcome to the 2nd 9 weeks!

PSAT Information: All 10th and 11th grade students (and some 9th grade students as well) completed the PSAT on October 13 this week. We hope to have those scores back in December. At that time, we will send home information about how to access their PSAT score report online. Each student will have an access code or will already have a College Board account from a previous experience with College Board such as an earlier PSAT, etc. At this time, please do not create anything new with College Board until you get your student’s score reports back in December. We will have further instructions in December.

Red Ribbon Week: October 25 – 29th is Red Ribbon week. The counselors are working with student council with dress up week options for the student body. We have included our days below. In addition, we will have red ribbons around the campus to remind students about drug awareness. Finally, information will be presented through advisories during that week regarding substance abuse and drug awareness.

9th Grade Guidance Presentations: 9th Grade counselors will be presenting classroom guidance lessons through English classes from October 15th through October 26th. During these lessons, students will be introduced to Naviance, our district’s tool for college and career planning. Students will take a Personality Survey that will identify their personality type and suggest careers and clusters that might be a good match for them. These results will also help in the 4-year planning when choosing electives during the course selection process. Counselors will also review goals for freshman year, including developing study habits and how students can start building their high school resume.

10th Grade Guidance Presentations: Main Campus counselors will be presenting their classroom guidance lessons for our sophomores beginning Tuesday October 19th through student’s World History classes. Students will spend time exploring class options and update their 4 -year plan. Counselors will discuss AP and Dual Credit classes as well as how to calculate their GPA and Weighted GPA’s. Finally, students will log into their Naviance account to do more career and college planning. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your student’s counselor.

Seniors are the only students in the Fall semester that may be exempt from final exams for half-credit courses which have a final exam, not a midterm. Students must maintain an 85-100 class average for the semester (18-weeks). In addition, the following criteria apply as well:

1. Seniors must meet the criteria listed above and the discipline requirement listed below. Seniors may be exempt from all their final exams both in the Fall (semester-long courses) and Spring semesters (year-long courses). Seniors may not be exempt from midterm exams in the Fall semester.
2. Underclassmen are not eligible for exemptions from final exams or midterms in the Fall semester.
3. A student granted a final exam exemption must still attend that class during the final exam period and must be present the entire duration of the final exam period to be considered exempt. Students who check out early during a final exam will forfeit the exemption and will receive a grade of Incomplete for the exam. Failure to attend will result in a zero or an incomplete for that course.
4. Any student that has served ISS, DAEP, or OSS while enrolled in a course during the semester of the final exam is not eligible for a final exam exemption for that course.
5. To ensure that all students have the opportunity to complete their exams in a distraction-free environment, the attendance office will not be doing early checkouts during exam periods. Parents and students should plan accordingly so that students remain in their exam period the entire duration of the exam period (both mid-term and final exams).

SCUBA: We had a great time at the Blue Lagoon this past Monday for our Dive Meetup! Diving with us were Club Vice President Gabe Aviles, Club Secretary Alexander Bleakley, Jonathan Yost, and Abriel Carnes along with her parents. After our dives we refueled at the Grand Buffet in Huntsville!

We plan to have our first-ever “float” in this year’s Red and Green Parade Wednesday, October 20th. Hope to see y’all there!

Our next club meeting is Monday, November 1st, at 3pm in the Senior Campus LGI 1. You do NOT have to already be Scuba certified to attend, and each meeting you attend gets your name entered for drawings for nice prizes at our December and May meetings. We are coordinating to have the manager of The Woodlands Dive Center speak to us about their facility and training opportunities.

We would still like to host a Try Scuba event for students/parents wishing to see what diving is all about. We are currently looking at one or both of the following dates: Saturday October 23rd and/or 30th, 1-3pm. You will need to fill out the paperwork located on our website at www.twhsscuba.club. The cost is $35, which can be applied toward a certification course should you choose to get certified; this cost includes use of all equipment for the session. You must let Faculty Advisor Chris McMartin know (cmcmartin@conroeisd.net) so we can work with The Woodlands Dive Center to reserve the space. Thank you!

STUDENT PARKING: Please note that the posted speed limit on the TWHS property is 10 MPH. Please be sure to observe the speed limit as well follow traffic rules such as stopping at intersections and cross paths on the property as well as using blinkers when turning into parking spaces and pathways.

Students assigned parking spaces in the Band Lot (1279-1508) or ROTC Lot (2114-2163) must move their cars by 3 pm every day. Students are not allowed to cut through the church parking lot. Nor are they allowed to park at the church or the neighborhood across the street. You will be towed. If your student needs to leave early, please send him or her in with a note to be delivered to the attendance office before school, during lunch or between classes. Doing so ensures the check-out process will be as quick and efficient as possible.

We still have some students with incomplete vaccine records. If you have received a letter or email from the clinic that your student has overdue vaccines or an expired Conscientious Objector exemption, please take care of it as soon as possible so they may remain enrolled.

If you indicated on the annual health form that your student requires any medications during the school day such as inhalers or Epi-Pens, there are action plans that need to be signed by a doctor every school year and turned in to the clinic before your student may begin carrying their medication. We do not keep medication from year to year, and we do not have any medication in the clinic that parents have not checked in. You are also welcome to check in OTC medications for your student to be kept in the clinic and administered by the clinic staff. We are available from 7-3 on school days.

If your student tests positive for COVID, we ask that you report the positive case in your student’s SSO by going to the COVID Central app and following the prompts there. You will receive information about isolation, attendance, a return to school date, as well as an email confirmation. By reporting the case online, your student’s absence will be excused. Students do need to contact their teachers to come up with a plan to get their missing assignments.

Also in the COVID Central app, you may schedule a free rapid test for your student at the Conroe ISD Police Department. Appointments are available from 8-4 on school days.

If your student has received the COVID vaccine, you are welcome to submit a copy of that vaccine record to the clinic. If your student is exposed to someone who has tested positive and is not having symptoms, her or she does not have to quarantine if we have a copy of their vaccine record on file, or if we have documentation that he or she has tested positive in the last six months.

For the most up to date information on the district’s COVID protocol, we ask that you refer to the Roadmap to Remaining Open on the Conroe ISD website, www.conroeisd.net/roadmap-to-reopening.

HOMECOMING DANCE: The annual Homecoming Dance will be in the gym on the Senior Campus on Saturday, October 23, from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Tickets are $20 each and are on sale through the School Cash Online webstore. Students will be able to purchase a guest ticket at the time they purchase their own. Students will need to pick up their ticket during lunches the week of Homecoming. No tickets will be sold at the door. All TWHS students should be prepared to show their student ID at the door of the dance, along with their paper ticket. Non-TWHS dates must provide a high school ID, driver's license or state-issued ID. No students in junior high will be admitted, nor will dates 21 or over be allowed. The front entrance to TWHS Main Campus will not be available during the evening. The student drop off for those attending the dance will be on the bus ramp.

HOMECOMING PARADE/PEP RALLY: Students and Staff assigned parking spots in the 5000 lot need to be sure to move their vehicles no later than 3:45 pm on Wednesday, October 20th. We are using the 5000 lot to stage floats for the parade and need the entire lot cleared. Students and staff can park in any of the other lots on campus that day after school other than spaces 1279-1508 (Band Practice Lot), 2114-2163 (ROTC Practice Lot) and the entire 5000 lot. See Mrs. Wilson in Grade Level with any questions.

HIGHLIGHTED HIGHLANDERS: Several times a year The Woodlands High School and the PTO honor students for outstanding citizenship, achievement, or service. Students are nominated by faculty and staff based on Good Citizenship, High or Unique Achievements, A Random Act of Kindness, Leadership, Excellent Attitude, etc. The “Highlighted Highlanders” receive a certificate and a highlighter recognizing their accomplishment. SCIENCE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: Saturday October 16 Science National Honor Society will be hosting a Science Fun Day for elementary and intermediate students. This free event will be from 10am until noon in the center courtyard. We will have a wide variety of different science experiments and demonstrations.

JROTC: This Saturday, October 16 we will participate in our first Orienteering Meet of the year at Tom Bass Park in Houston! We have a record 27 cadets going--good luck to all who are competing!

Our Aerospace Team hosts an RC Flyout this Friday, October 15. Cadets in attendance earn an activity toward their ribbon. Come try our camera drones and if you are checked out on our planes, you can fly those too!

We look forward to seeing everyone as we march in the Red and Green Parade Wednesday, October 20th.

On Thursday, October 21st we will host our first Campus Cleanup of the year! Great way to help beautify our school! Cadets will earn community service hours for participating.

Our next Spirit Night is at El Chaparro on Tuesday, October 26th, from 5-9pm. Mention you are supporting JROTC and our Booster Club will receive 10% of your check!

Our JROTC Social Activity for this month will be Friday, October 29th. It’s a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt and costume event!

FUNDRAISER TO HONOR VETERANS AND SUPPORT JROTC: Our Booster Club has partnered with Wreaths Across America to both honor our Nation’s fallen heroes and support our organization. EVERYONE is welcome to purchase a wreath which will be placed on a veteran’s grave near Christmas time.
