Marines Class Captains consist of alumni who represent the alumni of their graduating year. They are ambassadors that help maintain relationships with other alumni and the Long Beach school community.

Being a class captain is a great way to stay involved with the Long Beach school community and are as active in the role as their schedule will allow.

Class captains help the alumni coordinator:

- Establish and maintain social media presence for their specific grade

- Outreach alumni and encourage membership to the Alumni Association

- Keep classmates up to date on events and news about Long Beach Schools

- Encourage and increase participation in Long Beach events and alumni activities

- Plan alumni events and get togethers

Long Beach High School affords students the ability to enroll in Creative Writing and apply to enroll in Talented Writers. Both programs nurture students' writing talents and Mrs. Koegel, who began her teaching career at Long Beach in 1996, took over the Talented Writers program when Ms. Pickus retired in 2004. She also established Creative Writing at that time. She provides a safe and comfortable environment that allows students to take risks in the classroom.

The courses recognize, support and develop the talents of young writers of prose and poetry. These courses run on four-year cycles to allow students to take them more than once. Students in these courses publish their work in Long Beach High School’s award-winning literary magazine, Fragments. Any student in the school may also submit pieces. Fragments editors and contributors consistently earn top honors from notable organizations, including the American Scholastic Press Association, Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Empire State School Press, National Council of Teachers of English and National School Press Association. Students also enter their individual portfolios and pieces in a variety of poetry festivals and writing contests. Many graduates go on to play roles in their collegiate publications and use the skills learned in these programs to continue writing and often publishing on the higher-education level and beyond

Talented Writers is a nine year recipient of Scholastic’s gold medalist award. It is a competitive, rigorous, time-consuming program in which students must be interviewed along with a portfolio of three pieces in order to be accepted. It is a four year commitment for students recruited from eighth grade, however should a student apply and get accepted while in an upper grade, they must continue with the course until they graduate, while Creative Writing is a course that students can remain in for anywhere from one to four years. Since Creative Writing is run as more of a workshop, students will not receive homework, unless the weekly assignment is not completed during the four days given in class. Students in the Talented Writers program complete assignments out of class, in order to utilize the full class time to peer edit each other’s pieces. Both programs have and strengthen excellent writers; they simply have different class procedures and workload.

Fragments is a literary art magazine that meets Friday afternoons where students learn how to design, layout and collaborate to produce award-winning magazines annually. Participation in this program sets students apart from others on college applications, internships and jobs, in addition to practicing necessary layout skills. These students become experts in software that can aid in employment in paid newsletters, magazines, and other publications. For example, a former Fragment member is now employed as social media manager for Cornell’s Animal Science Society, who was already equipped with graphic design and layout skills far before she began her post-secondary education.

Fragments 2023 has been recognized by the National Council Teachers of English of the Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) program. They have also been rewarded with several first place awards, including the American Scholastic Press Association, National School Press Association and Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

In September, the State issued a competitive grant possibility for districts who were willing to convert to a full day Pre-K. Knowing it was a priority for many families, the district submitted the grant, and were awarded nearly $1.5 million dollars to convert the already successful half-day pre-k program.
All four elementary schools will have Pre-K sections next year! Students will be welcomed into "Wondergarten"- an inquiry-themed, center-based program that integrates literacy and numeracy, opportunities for inquiry and nature based exploration and free play and choice.
