Like most of you I remember. I remember walking into my school building that morning. Mrs. Nausley, the receptionist, was sitting at her desk, the radio on. The level of her intensity on her face gave me reason to pause. There was a plane crash she said, at least I think....I sat for a bit, listened with her. We learned the reality, felt the initial wave of sadness. I went to my classroom. My group of 4th grade students began making their way to my classroom. There was a great deal of chatter, some nervous laughter, some tears, a palpable heaviness in the air. I was 23. A newbie at my craft. I learned quickly that day ~

We are all still learning. Our students will never experience this moment in history with the same level of emotion that moved each of us that day to tears, to anger, to sorrow, to pain... They can, however, experience the knowledge and understanding that on that day we as a country as a nation came together in countless ways whether through incredible acts of bravery or silent moments of prayer.

As a now much older educator and parent, this day now serves to inspire. What an amazing opportunity to talk, share and teach our children not simply about moments in history but about people and bravery and the amazing acts of heroism exhibited on this day by ordinary individuals. They say there is a hero in us all. It never hurts to remind them ~

First, THANK YOU to all who joined us VIRTUALLY for this Weeks Back to School Nights. We did not want to overwhelm everyone with EVERYTHING all at once so we are including important information from our Home and School Organization and our Specialist Teachers!

I will be turning grades on for parent viewing following dismissal today. I have posted some screenshots below to hopefully walk you thru the process. A couple of items to take note of...

1. Your student MAY not have grades in all of their courses at this time.

2. In some courses the teachers have set-up their gradebooks a bit differently meaning you may see a final average or you may see scores that are more of a points total. We will look at this as a faculty to see how best to set this portion up for the sake of consistency.

3. In my review of courses I noticed a couple of kiddos missing from a specific class or a couple of kiddos in multiple classes. I am going to spend some time ironing those pieces out as well.

4. If you have questions about a score, grade or assignment PLEASE ask your child first. Sometimes they can clear up any confusion VERY quickly. If they are unsure PLEASE do reach out to the specific teacher.

5. Grades look VERY DIFFERENT at the K, 1 and 2 levels. Students are working toward the mastery of certain skills within each content area while also learning how to learn, problem solve and manage the ins and outs of a school day. We will communicate progress with you but it may at times look different.

6. We have managed the parent viewing of grades in a few different ways over the past few years. At times we have only opened them on certain dates and at others we have left them on for viewing at all times throughout the course of the year. For now, PLEASE remain mindful that checking grades occasionally makes sense. Checking grades everyday may be a bit too much and cause unnecessary added anxiety for parents and children. If you notice trends or patterns certainly talk with your child and / or reach out to your child's teacher. In the same manner, if a teacher notices trends or patterns or it appears your child is having difficulty with a certain skill, concept or content area they will reach out as well! At this time I HAVE turned on the option for you to receive a weekly progress report update. You as a parent will have to choose this as an option. (see the screenshot below)

7. Many parents liked the feature that allowed them to receive alerts when their child received a lower grade (D of F) on an assignment. I believe I have set this up to allow you to do so but will be double checking in with my "mock" account to be sure.

8. LAST, grades equal report cards which equal parent teacher conferences which are traditionally held each year in the Fall just prior to our Fall break. We will KEEP YOU POSTED regarding what format we will be utilizing to talk and share with you at that time.

With the dawn of Virtual Learning it has become much easier for students who are home to still "participate" in class. A few reminders related to this process ~

1. Your child may be able to join in class but depending on what materials they brought home with them may not be able to complete all of the work.

2. The links to participate in their classes can be found in their google classrooms. Students in higher grade levels i.e. 5th grade and up will be able to "join" in with a greater level of independence than some of our younger kiddos. In other words, most should know where to go and what to do :-)

3. Teachers are always happy and eager to help but may not be able to respond to an email first thing in the morning to walk through the process as they are preparing to start their school day. We may be able to help facilitate this process from the office but cannot guarantee we will be able to do so as soon as class starts.

4. As we have continued to move through this hybrid/virtual model we continue to LEARN and GROW more and more each day. As I have told our teachers I think we might be pretty amazing at this by next year. In other words, we are all continuing to research, practice, make new mistakes, collaborate, learn and share. These practices will lead to tremendous growth but never perfection.

5. If your child does log in and participate in class they are marked as Virtually Learning for that day and NOT marked simply as absent. If they are capable and able PLEASE have them join in.

This afternoon your child brought home paperwork outlining results from our recent AIMS Web assessments. This is ONE tool we utilize to help us evaluate student progress, areas for growth, while also planning for instruction. While the cover letter helps to explain this specific tool, please note that this is just one data point. It is important to have multiple points of data in order to draw meaningful conclusions. Thus, we will continue to incorporate other assessment tools into our work to gain a better picture of each individuals child's academic profile. Also, of importance is the understanding that each child's profile is comprised of many more elements than simply academics. We are also mindful of and continuously reflecting on each child's overall growth spiritually, socially and emotionally. Within the realm of academics we are incredibly BLESSED to have a team of individuals working to provide meaningful additional support to our students when we observe areas for growth. The ability to provide these tools for child is a good thing! It is a bit like a child who needs glasses. We would want a child to be able to see, thus we provide them with the necessary tools. We want all of our children to be able to read, write and compute at a developmentally appropriate level, thus we provide them with the necessary tools and resources. THANK YOU for giving us this opportunity!

Our school is blessed with a wonderful faculty and staff that do so much for the sake of our children.

This year, they are facing even more challenges than usual. As a school family, one of the best ways that we can support them is by prayer. We are asking every school family to choose one day during the school year in which they will pray for our faculty and staff in a very particular and intentional way.

The goal is to have every school day covered between now and the end of the school year, so that our faculty and staff know that they are covered by our prayers every day as they serve our children. Parking Lot Procedures

When dropping off on the upper lot in the morning, please pull forward as much as possible prior to having your child exit the car. If you drop off at the first door without anyone in front of you, you have the potential of backing up cars on 5th street.

PLEASE WEAR YOUR MASK when you are on our parking lot. We need you to lead by example. I have noticed this more on the top parking lot than the bottom parking lot. THANK YOU for your cooperation!!!

If you have a K-8 child, PLEASE PARK ON THE PARKING LOT. ONLY PK families can park on the street.

Animals: I have a betta fish and two dogs! One dog is named Heidi. She is 4 years old and a bichon frise which are little white balls of fluff! She loves to sleep all day and snuggle. My other dog is Lily. She is 11 weeks old milky/silkese which is a mix of silky terrier and maltese. She has that puppy energy and sharp puppy teeth! She and Heidi love to play together and it is adorable. Lily has already learned I’m “mom” and cries when I leave for work in the morning.

Who is your hero? John Williams. He is a movie soundtrack composer who created the music for some of the most famous current movies such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Jaws, and countless others. He is my hero because he is so incredibly talented, yet the nicest and most humble human being.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? I would live with my family, wherever they decide to live. Family is very important to me. If family weren’t a consideration, I would move to Alaska because I love winter! The cold and snow are my favorite. I also love the Iditarod which is a dog sled race which takes place in Alaska every year.

What is your favorite family vacation? Going to different beaches in Florida!

What is your favorite thing about being a teacher? The kids! They are why I teach.

What is your proudest accomplishment? Earning my Master of Arts in Education, English degree. I love teaching but I also loved being a student. I miss going to class.

What makes you laugh the most? The goofy things my dogs do!

If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? Be an astronaut and go to space. I’m very curious about what is out there in the universe.

If money was no object, what would you do all day? Read and teach, so pretty much what I do now.

If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? Anywhere between 1580-1614 so I could watch a live original performance of a Shakespearean play.

What is the best gift you have ever been given? The love of my family and friends.

If you could share a meal with 4 people, living or dead who would they be? Shakespeare, Jane Austen, J.K. Rowling, and John Williams.

What is your favorite Holiday? Christmas!

What is the most daring thing you have ever done? I’m terrified of heights so when my family was at the Grand Canyon during a vacation, and my mom told me to turn around for a picture, I actually turned my back while standing on the edge of a giant cliff. I really thought I was going to fall...

What is your favorite food? Spaghetti

Treat? Pretty much anything chocolate!

Restaurant? Any place that serves spaghetti

Are you related or distantly related to anyone famous? One of my ancestors was a Vice President of the USA

What is your family motto- spoken or unspoken? Where there’s a will there’s a way

If you had a warning label, what would it say? “Nerd Approaching”

Who was your favorite teacher in school and why? My high school math teacher. Beyond teaching me how to succeed in math (I ended up going all the way through calculus), she taught me how to think.

What is your favorite family tradition? On Christmas eve my mom reads my siblings and I “The Night Before Christmas” and “The Nativity Story”

If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be? Well my Harry Potter patronus is a horse, so I guess it would be a horse. That or a dog.

The social committee at school is working to put together a video for Mr. Di as a gift to help say good-bye. If you would like to record a special message to share or record a funny story or special memory it would be greatly appreciated. We are looking forward to honoring his many years of service at SCB. We are excited to bring back the ability to support your SCB Family or parish ministry through the SCRIP program. As with everything else lately, new procedures are necessary to keep our volunteers and staff safe during the exchange of out gift cards. We would like to make the process as hands free as possible. Orders and payments will be made using the online system provided by ShopWithScrip.com. One of our coordinators will then fulfill your order and it will be available for pickup or child delivery.

Middle Schoolers (but especially 8th graders): Please make sure you are current with your immunizations. Due to new regulations, High Schools require all students to have TDap and Meningococcal.

Middle School Females: If you daughter experiences pain at certain times of the month and requires medication, please send a doctor's note with a bottle of medication that they are allowed to take. We also try to stock the bathrooms with "supplies". If you feel inclined to donate such items, we will gladly accept :)

If your child has allergies, please get a note from your doctor. Allergy symptoms mirror Covid-like symptoms. If we do not have a note from your doctor stating they have allergies, your child we be sent home.

PLEASE go to FACTS and fill out the medical portion of each child. It is very important for us to know about your child. Please let us know any medication they may take in the morning- ADHD, Allergy, etc
