Hello Tigers!

It's been a BIG week at The Park! Wednesday was the first Passport Club of the school year, while Thursday was the official kickoff for Jog-a-Thon 2019, with our annual JAT assembly. Back to School Night topped off our Thursday, in which attendees were treated to story time and a glimpse of their child(ren)'s day. Perhaps it goes without saying, but all of this underscores the importance of YOUR involvement in the education of your children. My continued and heartfelt appreciation for all you do in service of our learning community!

Moreover, and related to THE MANY enrichment programs/opportunities Raleigh Park is able to offer, WE NEED YOUR HELP. Many of you have heard me speak of the "Three T's" of stewardship: time, talent and treasure. While the issue of money often overshadows the comprehensive needs of our school, your time and talent are no less important. If you've ever pondered about how you can contribute with your time and/or talent, please contact volunteer@raleighparkpto.org about the many opportunities to make a difference in our school community.

This morning (Friday), we conducted our first lockdown drill of the school year. I'm happy to say your children performed wonderfully! While the situations that precede an actual lockdown scenario are not always pleasant to ponder, it is in this practice and preparation that we can operate with confidence and situational awareness needed to keep your children as safe as possible. While our staff will have age-appropriate conversations with their students, I recommend you take a moment to do this as well. A resource you may find helpful is The Center for Parenting Education, specific to discussing traumatic events with children. We certainly do not want students to associate school and danger, but knowing how hard the school works to keep all students safe is important to know. Please refer to the i love u guys foundation for a summary of our Standard Response Protocol (SRP).

It is important that students have a sense of comfort and independence as they navigate all that is expected of them as learners. One way you can support this gradual release of responsibility is by saying morning goodbyes in the front lobby and allowing your children to walk to class on their own. This small and often difficult step (we find more so for parents) can go a long way in encouraging your children to be confident, capable and resilient learners.

As we move forward in the school year, should you desire to continue to walk your child to class, please check into the office for a visitor badge prior to walking through the hallways. This is a safety/security related precaution that helps us to know who belongs in the building and who does not.

The Oregon Legislature passed and the Governor signed the $2 billion Student Success Act (HB 3427) in Spring 2019. This is an historic and much needed investment in K-12 schools. Beaverton could be able to access an estimated $34 million per year through a state application process.

School districts will be required to apply for funds. Districts must demonstrate engagement of the community in a needs assessment process prior to the application for funds. The needs assessment includes the District’s existing Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) and an expanded public engagement process with multiple and diverse stakeholders.

Districts are allowed four broad uses for the grant proposals:

1. Increasing instructional time
2. Addressing student health and safety needs
3. Increasing adults/decreasing class size
4. Expanding well-rounded learning opportunities.

Programs must also meet students’ behavioral and mental health needs and increase academic achievement as well as reduce disparities among student groups.

Phase I community engagement will seek input on what is working and what improvements are needed. Your voice matters! We welcome your perspective and opinion. Take our BSD Needs Assessment Survey!

La Legislatura de Oregon aprobó y el Gobernador firmó la Ley de Éxito Estudiantil de $ 2 billones (HB 3427) en la primavera de 2019. The Jog-A-Thon is in full stride after yesterday’s kick-off assembly! Please be sure to review the contents of the Pledge Packets your children brought home on Thursday. The weekend is a great time to approach your neighbors and friends for pledges! Remember too, that the online donation page (linked below) allows students to reach out to family and friends who don’t live nearby.

Not only is the Jog-a-Thon Raleigh Park’s most important fundraiser of the year, this is a community building event for our school. We encourage all parents, family and friends who can spare an hour to come cheer your child(ren) on during his/her running time (running schedule is inside the pledge packet) and see the spirit this fabulous event creates!

There are lots of individual prizes. Some prizes include most laps run per grade, most pledges collected, PYP profile trait awards, and an all-school ice cream party if we collectively reach $45,000! Your children want to be part of the excitement at school; we hope that you help support them!

We are also still looking for volunteers to help out on Jog-a-Thon day, Thursday, October 10. Shifts are split into two time slots; 8:30-11:45a & 11:45a-2:30p that day. You may time your volunteer slot to match up with when your child/children will be running.

Families who are currently receiving meal benefits, who have not yet applied for meal benefits for the 2019-2020 school year, must reapply before October 15 to continue to receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch for their children. Unless the Meal Benefits Office has received and approved an Application for Free and Reduced Price Meals by October 15, your students will go into “Paid” status and you will be responsible to pay for all meals they receive at school.

THIS WEDNESDAY, October 2 is International Walk + Bike to School Day. We also call it Walk + Roll Day, to celebrate all types of active transportation — biking as well as riding scooters, skateboards and even your school bus. It’s great for us, our kids and it’s great for the community. Here are five top reasons:

1. Fewer vehicles reduces traffic congestion and carbon emissions near schools and in school parking lots.
2. More people on foot and bike builds school community and boosts awareness of all road users around schools.
3. Physical activity boosts kids’ readiness to learn and brings long-lasting health benefits.
4. Kids have fun with their friends and bond with their families while walking or rolling together.
5. Being outside builds independence, resilience and lifelong transportation skills. If your child would like to walk to school with a volunteer-led group, join in a Walking School Bus or ask your administrator or Green Team to start one.

Join kids and adults all around the world to celebrate the benefits of walking and biking. Plus, get cool stickers and enter a raffle to win other prizes! If you ride the bus to school, you can run/walk with Mileage Club at lunch recess to participate.

We need Raleigh Park parent volunteers to help us celebrate National Walk + Roll to School Day, Wednesday, October 2.

• Volunteers are needed from 7:30-8:00a. We will have have a table on the front lawn to greet all of our RP students that walk/roll to school Wednesday morning. There will be a poster for the students to sign that will be hung in our hallway, and small prizes to give out.

• Volunteers are needed 10:45-11:45a and 11:45a-12:30p. We will have a table set up during Wednesday Lunch Recess for any kids who bus to school or couldn’t walk or roll in the morning. Kids can walk/run two laps so they can be included in our RP Tigers Walk and Roll to School Day!

During an unscheduled early dismissal, schools will use the emergency closure plan you indicated for your student in enrollment and enrollment verification. During the online process, you were asked to indicate what the student should do in case of emergency or early school closure. You were only allowed to choose one option. The three options were:

• Pick up by Parent/Emergency Contact/Daycare

• School Bus to Home/Neighbor/Daycare

• Walk/Ride Bike/Drive to Home/Neighbor/Daycare

If you don’t remember what you selected, you can check by logging into ParentVUE and clicking on “Student Info” in the left hand navigation. Your selection will be displayed at the bottom of the page under “Other Data.”

If you wish to change this plan, contact Raleigh Park, or reference the Back to School Verification.

*Please note, if you choose to update your information online, the information is not updated in the student information system until the school has accepted your verification. This process may take up to two weeks to be completed. The fastest way to update your information is to call the school. Please make a note of the option you selected and keep the information somewhere handy, in the event of a future early school closure.

As much as we want your child at school, there are times when it is appropriate to keep them at home due to illness. Throughout the year, we find that students with fever, vomiting/diarrhea, sustained cough, etc. are sent to school when they should be at home. Meanwhile, knowing the difference between a mild case of sniffles and something more significant can be difficult. Please refer to the flyers below to better help you differentiate. Keeping sick students home not only helps with rest and recovery, but it also keeps the ailments from spreading. Thank you!

For the seventh year, Raleigh Park will partner with Katoh Japanese Exchange Program. We are excited and honored by this opportunity for mutual understanding and appreciation of different cultures. However, it will not happen if we do not have families willing to host. If you will have a 4th or 5th grade student next school year and are interested in knowing more, please reference the following flyer.

The Beaverton School District is nationally recognized for high student achievement and innovative programs. Beaverton students in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to investigate learning options that best fit their academic needs. Students can choose their neighborhood school, or apply for one of a number of Learning Option Programs. Transportation is provided.

Applications for the 2020-2021 school year will be available starting Monday, October 14, 2019. Please do some early investigation of the Learning Options Programs online and plan to attend one or more of the open houses that are available. Students may only select one option on their application.

All applicants must reside within the Beaverton School District boundaries. Beginning October 14, current Beaverton School District students are able to apply online using their BSD student ID. Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school will need to complete a paper application available online, or at any school office beginning October 14, 2019. Applicants who do not have Internet access may also complete a paper application available at any school office. Please give careful consideration to your choice of school. Once an application has been submitted, no changes will be allowed.

Applications must be received no later than Friday, December 6, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. (PST).

The Beaverton School District has a vacancy on the Budget Committee and seeks a diverse candidate pool for Zone 7 (School Board member Tom Colett). The District schools represented in these zones are: Barnes, Chehalem, Raleigh Hills K-8, Raleigh Park, and William Walker elementary schools, Meadow Park Middle School, Arts & Communication Magnet Academy, and Beaverton High School.

Individuals interested in serving on the Budget Committee need to live in the zone they wish to represent. Zone maps are available on the District website. The School Board Zones do not entirely match school attendance areas. Candidates must also meet the following qualifications: be a qualified voter of the District, have lived in the District for one year and cannot be a Beaverton School District employee.

The Budget Committee reviews the District’s budget and recommends needed changes. The Committee conducts business in evening public meetings held between November and June. The Budget Committee also approves the Budget Document and forwards it to the School Board for adoption by the end of June.

Budget Committee members will be appointed by the School Board. Those who wish to apply should complete the Budget Committee Application by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27, 2019. For more information, please contact the Communications & Community Involvement Department at 503-356-4360.
