HMS News
Greetings from HMS!
This past Friday, HMS was lucky enough to have dozens of high school seniors choose to spend their day helping out their former middle school teachers for the day during the annual "Harbormen Helping Hingham" event organized by our friends at HHS. They volunteered in every type of class and at all grade levels, connecting with some of their former teachers for the day.
I can think of no greater compliment that could be paid to our school than the number of young men and women who choose to return here each spring as they prepare to start the next chapter in their own lives. It tells me that they look back on their time at HMS fondly, made a lasting connection with one of our amazing faculty members, and maybe found a subject or an area of interest that they developed a passion for.
I hope that in four years time we are welcoming back our current eighth graders because they too remember their time at HMS positively.
Thanks to all the seniors who helped out at HMS, as well as all of the other schools around town and the many other worthwhile community service projects that took place. Their help was very much appreciated, but the example they set for our younger students is even more valuable.
This community has much to be proud of!
The eighth Grade students have begun their last unit of the year; the Civics Action Project!
This project will culminate in Civics Day Presentations on June 14 here at Hingham Middle School.
Students will be choosing, in their working groups, an issue in the community that they want to address and will work to find solutions and improvements.
Our eighth graders will be reaching out to community leaders, experts, and families for advice and assistance. making tis an authentic and action-oriented experience.
We are hopeful that this will be the beginning of lifelong community engagement.
Print Making
HMS Art Club wrapped up the year with some printmaking this week while grade seven art students completed similar projects with an aquatic theme! Students from all grades created prints using a variety of materials, and used ink and brayers to print their designs.
While these pictures give you an idea of how great they came out, they can not capture the incredible detail students achieved in their work!
Saving the Orangutans in Grade Seven
Students on the 7th Grade Pirate team used a simulation to analyze an orangutan population. The percentage of fruit trees available for food was altered to determine changes in energy levels, birth rates, and death rates. This allowed students to figure out if their orangutan population was more, less, or equally successful compared to a natural ecosystem.
Congratulations!
Below are pictures of the winners of this year's Grade 6 New England Math League and Continental Math League contests.
These students should be proud of this accomplishment, and we look forward to seeing how they grow as mathematicians over the next few years!

Movin' On Up!
Hingham High School counselors are hosting the Class of 2027 for a first-time event: Ninth Grade Move Up Day!
The Class of 2027 will have the opportunity to tour HHS, hear from upperclassmen about the daily life of a high school student, and have their questions answered. The ninth grade move up day is June 8th, 9:30 - 12:30 at HHS.
Lunch will be provided.
We are looking forward to what we are sure will be a great day!
After math MCAS Mrs. Flaherty’s students painted rocks to use as a border for the pollinator garden that is slowly but surely being built at our school. Keep an eye out for this important ecological landscape feature!
Term Four Mid-term Grades
We are writing to notify students and parents of the HMS community that mid-term for term 4 was this past week. Please take a moment to review your child’s progress with them. You can follow these steps to view mid-term averages on your X2 portal in the Student Portal:
Select the “MY INFO” top tab
Select the “TRANSCRIPT” side tab
Your child’s quarter 4 mid-term averages will be listed under the column heading of “Q4prg”.
This looks slightly different in the Family Portal. In that view:
Click the “Family” top tab.
Click the “Transcript” side tab.
Choose which class you wish to see grades for. The “Quarter Progress” grade appears under each term heading.
If you have multiple students at HMS (or in the Hingham Public Schools in general) you can toggle between them using the black arrows in the upper right hand corner.
If you are experiencing login difficulties please contact Mrs. Graney in the guidance office at mgraney@hinghamschools.org or 781-741-1550. Questions or concerns regarding your child’s class average should be directed to the appropriate teacher.
Health Class
Currently in Health Class, we are discussing the many ways we can face peer pressure as middle schoolers and continue throughout high school in different ways. We are learning the four types of communication skills, and role playing ways to apply refusal skills in certain situations and how to be assertive.
All good topics for discussion with your middle schooler when you ask them, "What did you do in school today?"

PTO News
Help Wanted!
The HMS PTO is looking for help!
The current board is composed of parents of students who will be moving on to high school come next fall, so we are in need of new leadership!
We are looking for three to four volunteers to fill out the board as we already have a PTO Treasurer for next year. Volunteers help with fall grade level events and oversee chairs for staff appreciation and mini-grants.
It’s a fun, but not large commitment and a great way to get involved at the middle school.
Please consider taking on one of these important positions.
Anyone interested can contact Kate Newth at katenewth@hotmail.com
Thank you for your support!
