MESSAGE FROM CROCKER PARENT GROUP PRESIDENT
Picture Day, check! 6th Grade and New Parent Reception, check, check! It seems like the first day of school is a distant memory and so many great things have been checked off the list in just a few short months. A feeling of excitement fills the air as we move into October and the Fall season. Things to look forward to at Crocker in the coming weeks are the 7th Grade Social at Bel Mateo Bowl on October 20th (Make Note: time changed from 5:00-7:00pm to 6:30-8:30pm), Red Ribbon Week is October 24th-28th, and the Crocker Belonging Carnival on Sunday, October 30th.
Speaking of Fall Fun! Parents, please encourage your children to participate in this year’s first ever Crocker Belonging Carnival, Sunday, October 30th from 12-2:00pm on the Crocker Blacktop. This will be a fun way to end Red Ribbon Week. Our Counselor Bonnie Slater will be helping our students plan fun games and activities for the elementary students K-5. Students may run a booth by themselves or with up to 5 others. This is a fantastic way for your Crocker students to build leadership skills and show our community how awesome Crocker Middle School is. I’m bringing my 5th grader! I hope to see you all there!
6th Grade/New Parent Reception: What a beautiful evening! 6th grade parents and new parents to the district came together last Thursday night to mix, mingle and get to know one another. Principal Keith Rocha and Assistant Principal Lisa Ayer were there to welcome all our new families. A huge thank you to Lauren Evans and Jenna Golde for chairing this lovely event. We would also like to thank Mirra Desuasido, Eric Sarbib, Deepti Sodhi, Emily Hua, Ericka Silva, Courtney Bocci, Chelsea Woo, Heather Kollar, and Rochelle Kushner for volunteering to help and support our co-chairs. We also had the honor of being served by a few of our fabulous Crocker DREAM Leaders.
COY/CCA Award Recipient Reception: It couldn’t have been a more perfect event at Town Hall honoring our Community Care Award Recipient Tony Giacomazzi and the Citizen of the Year Don Geddis. A special thanks to our APG President Mary Ann Hasenstab, former APG President Courtney Bocci, and the APG Parent Group for all your time and effort organizing the event. We would also like to recognize the Crocker 8th grade students that signed up to help serve at the event; Will Freedland, Aurelia Leung, Olivia Friedman, Jessie Scherer, Jacob and Jason Jajeh, Armaan Mishra, and Ryan Huie. They represented Crocker well.
Happy October Vikings!
Shelby Van Doren
CPG President
When to Keep Your Child Home
Sometimes when your child does not feel well it is difficult to decide whether or not to send the child to school. Here are some guidelines to follow when making that decision.
A child should not be in school when he/she has:
- Nausea or vomiting, or has vomited during the night
- Diarrhea
- Frequent coughing or sneezing
- Evidence of a communicable disease such as a rash, fever or unusual sores
- A temperature of 99.5 degrees or above. If a child has had a fever, he/she may not return to school until she/he has been fever-free for 24 hours (without taking fever-reducing medication)
- Sore throat
- Strep throat – must be on an antibiotic for 24 hours and be symptom-free
- A new cold or generally feels bad
- Unusual watery, burning or red, crusted eyes
ALLOCATIONS: IDEAS FOR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS WANTED! By Oct 31st
What to do: All ideas, big or small, are welcome and encouraged. Please send suggestions to Katrina Reynolds at crockertreasurer@gmail.com no later than October 31. Crocker Staff and Student Council will also be asked for input.
What is Allocations? Allocations is money that accumulates from excess funds generated from the prior year(s)’ operating budget (parent dues less expenses for that year). Allocations money is directed to one-time expenditures used to improve the environment for students and staff. Past examples include: water bottle filler, flexible seating, an emergency operation plan, and doormats for the classrooms.
Allocations Process (warning, bit boring!): Traditionally each fall, the Allocations committee - headed by the CPG Treasurer, select Board Members and the principal - meet to review ideas generated by the Crocker Community, then propose their recommendations to the parents for vote and approval.
Thank you to all who have paid your dues for the 2022-2023 school year!
Any questions please email Katrina at crockertreasurer@gmail.com

CROCKER CLUBS
CROCKER COMMUNITY SERVICE
Here is what Community service is at Crocker:
- Community service is work performed by a person or group of people for the benefit and betterment of their community.
- These events can be through Crocker or through extracurricular activities.
- Any student that has done community service (no minimum needed, and no signature/approval required) will fill out the form with their name and what they did during that trimester.
- Mrs. Slater will send every student a google form via the students' school email for them to complete about what service they did during that trimester. This form will go out the last week of each trimester. Mrs. Slater will track all students' hours.
- At the end of the school year all students who participated in community service will be rewarded with a social event during the school day.
North buddies have started. This is a time where students sign up for the trimester to go to North during their lunch time to support North students. If your child is interested, please have them reach out to Mrs. Slater.
The student store is open daily during first recess and the bagel window is now open weekly during first recess on Wednesdays.

ON OCTOBER 31ST DURING LUNCH FROM 12:45-1:20PM, CROCKER WILL HOST OUR FIRST SOCTOBER TRICK OR TREAT!
6th graders will bring their socks to Room 3
7th graders will bring their socks to the Lecture Hall

HCSD Building Belonging Week (BBW) October 24-28, 2022
Your family is invited to join HCSD and the IDEA Committee for Building Belonging Week, a district-wide initiative designed to enhance students’ sense of belonging in their school and community. This week-long celebration aims to honor the wonderful diversity in our school community, and help students understand their important role in making our schools feel welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
Please save the morning of Tuesday, October 25th for a "Parade of Belonging" in which students and parents “parade” to school from designated nearby houses starting at ~8am. Stay tuned for more details about the week’s activities via Konstella and @hcsdideacommittee. If you would like to help out, please email: Meg Ketchersid Edgett (North), Erin Schaefer (South), or Amy Rodde (West).
IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access) is a district-wide, parent-led group that supports the families, faculty, and staff of the Hillsborough City School District (HCSD) to create an environment that welcomes and is informed by diversity, fosters a sense of belonging, and prepares our students to make a positive impact on the world.
Did you know…
…your HSF donations will support the annual salaries of 25 teachers this school year? Without the financial support of HSF and our community, our class sizes could be up to 23% larger.
Every single dollar makes a difference to our schools. If you have not yet made your contribution to HSF, please DONATE TODAY!
Hillsborough Classic Tennis Tournament, Luncheon & Fashion Show
Many thanks goes out to the ~100 men and women who participated in this year’s Hillsborough Classic Tennis Tournament, and to the nearly 20 families who graciously offered up their courts for the tournament.

Breakfast with a Veteran
This year Crocker will be hosting a Veterans Day event on November 10th from 8:30-9:30am called breakfast with a Veteran. We are looking for as many Veterans as we can get so that they can meet with a small group of about 10 students to share their story/experiences with us. We would like our students to better understand why we celebrate Veteran's Day, and we would have small gifts for each of the Veterans. If you know a Veteran that would be interested in coming to this event please email Mrs. Slater at bslater@hcsdk8.org
National Charity League
National Charity League is a group of mothers and daughters who have come together in a commitment to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. San Mateo is fortunate to have two chapters serving our area. The Crystal Springs Chapter kicked off the New Member Drive on October 1 and will continue through the end of November. We are looking for philanthropic mother and daughter teams in 6th through 8th grade who like to volunteer, give back to the community, can make a commitment, enjoy the company of others, are leaders, and like to have fun. To learn more about our chapter and membership guidelines, please visit our website.
