October is the Month of the Holy Rosary
As a reminder: SMM students and faculty pray a decade of the rosary, led by Mission Club members, every morning on the WSMM Morning Show at 8:10 am. Please join us in spirit at that time and pray wherever you are.
DON'T FORGET ... IT'S CLASS PICTURE DAY ON MONDAY
Forms were sent home today. Please look in your children's back packs for the form. Please complete and return if you are planning on ordering a class picture.
In addition individual picture retakes will also be taken on Monday. Only students who ordered a picture package and have it with them or who were not here on original picture day are eligible to have their individual picture retaken. The original picture package must be given to the photographer. So please send the original package with your child on Monday.
Bring your best smile!
TWO IMPORTANT REMINDERS
700 HEALTH POLICIES:
8. Students will not be given non-prescriptive medicine such as aspirin and Tylenol. A fever of 100.4 or higher will necessitate the child being picked up from school by a parent or someone designated on the student emergency form. A child must be fever free and symptom free for 48 hours before being allowed to return to school. (Without the use of fever reducing medicines, please)
Here is what it states in our handbook regarding fever during COVID:
Parent drop off. Please remain in your car in the carline. In order to avoid any unnecessary exposure to others, parents will not be able to walk the students to class. Student temperatures will be taken while in the car. To aid in this process, we are asking that you make available the right side passenger door for ease and speed of testing. If your child needs assistance in buckling/unbuckling, we ask that you aid in this so that teachers do not have to enter your vehicle for this process. If a student has a fever of 100.4 or above at arrival, please pull out of the carline and wait until 8:00 to enter the school office for a second test. If the second test is less than 100.4, then the student may attend school on that day. Students who test above 100.4 on the second reading can return to school once they are fever free without symptoms and medication for 48 hours. Parents, please do not medicate your children in the morning to bring down any fever they may have in order to send them to school. This will only increase the possibility of exposure to other students and would not respect other families.
2) We allow parents to send special birthday treats for students in grades PreK through 4 with permission from the homeroom teacher and principal. As much as we appreciate your generosity, we ask that you do not send snacks for any other reason. We do have special events during the school year in which we will have snacks. During COVID restrictions, we ask that birthday treats be individually wrapped.
1000-15 SCHOOL PARTIES AND GIFT GIVING The classroom teacher, in coordination with the room mother, may plan a small class celebration at selected times during the year. All class parties must be approved by the principal (Note: Parents may not provide special birthday or other treats for a class unless the teacher has obtained permission from the principal). Students are not allowed to exchange gifts on campus. Deliveries of balloons, flowers, and other gifts for children are not allowed. Party invitations may not be distributed at school, unless given to the entire class
Attention Parents of 5th, 6th & 7th Grade Students
We are anxiously awaiting the November update form the governor. We hope that the students will be able to start moving classes and use their lockers then.
In the meantime, students may rent their lockers for a fee of $3.00 which has been billed to and is payable through your FACTS accounts.
IMPORTANT: Due to an increase in student passwords being used by others, we will institute a detention for any student who is logging into another student's account. Updates will be made to the handbook.

TEACHER FEATURE: Darine Rice
Hi, My Name Is Darine Rice and This Is My Story
I was born in New Orleans and now live in Covington. I have been teaching for twenty years, all of which have been at SMM. When I interviewed with Mr. Ohler for my job, I immediately felt at home at SMM. I am still here because I still feel that way.
I became a teacher because I always loved school and loved helping the teachers at school; and now I love working with kids. I teach self-contained third grade so I teach all subjects. I am truly blessed to be able to work with so many wonderful teachers and students, to share my Catholic faith with them, and attend weekly Mass with them.
I have been married to my husband, James, for 21 years. James actually coached the SMM girls soccer team for a few years. We have two beautiful daughters, Allison and Emma, who both graduated from SMM (attended since PreK). In addition, James and I are parents to our 10-year-old yellow Lab named Blue.
I am the oldest of 6 children and attended Catholic school for both elementary and high school. Family is very important to me and I enjoy spending time with my family and attending my daughters’ soccer games. When not at the soccer field, I enjoy working on vinyl projects and gardening.

LOVE LIFE AMENDMENT ON NOVEMBER 3RD BALLOT
Attention, all Louisiana citizens: on the November 3rd election ballot, you will be asked, “Do you support an amendment declaring that, to protect human life, a right to abortion & the funding of abortion shall NOT be found in the Louisiana Constitution?” Please vote YES for Amendment #1. In Louisiana, we love babies & their mothers, so we want to make sure that no judge “finds” a right to abortion or the taxpayer funding of abortion in our Constitution as they have done in 13 other states.
The 40 Days for Life Prayer Campaign is from September 23 and November 1. We are asking everyone to pray &/or do some type of penance during those 40 days for an end to abortion. If anyone is so inclined, St. Margaret Mary has adopted October 17 as our day to go in front of the "Women's Health Care Center," an abortion facility in New Orleans, to pray for an hour sometime between 7:00 AM & 7:00 PM. We will have a sign-up sheet in the church vestibule.
