Principal's Desk
Dear CMIT South Elementary School Community,
I hope this message finds you well and rejuvenated after the Thanksgiving break! As we dive back into our routines, I'd like to take a moment to highlight some important events and initiatives happening in the coming weeks.
Return of Successful Thanksgiving Break
We've had a fantastic return from our break, and I want to extend my gratitude to all the students, parents, and staff for making it smooth and enjoyable. Each grade level had the valuable opportunity to review the Prince George's County Public Schools Students' Rights and Responsibilities. It's crucial for our students to understand their rights and responsibilities, shaping them into responsible scholars. Please ensure the acknowledgment forms are returned no later than Tuesday, December 5, 2023, to their respective classroom teachers.
Winter Testing
This week marks the commencement of our Winter Testing phase for the NWEA MAP for Reading, Math, and Science. This assessment helps us gauge our student's progress and tailor our support to their individual needs. Your encouragement and support during this time are incredibly appreciated. Communication has been posted in Class Dojo as well
OLSAT TAG Identification
Additionally, next week will see 4th graders taking the OLSAT TAG identification process for students. This evaluation aims to identify and support students with exceptional abilities and talents who may not have been identified in 1st grade in PGCPS. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we undertake this important process.
Student Conduct and Respect
A gentle reminder to all students: it's vital to keep our hands to ourselves. If a situation arises where a student feels uncomfortable or is touched inappropriately, please encourage them to seek the nearest adult for assistance. We aim to foster an environment where everyone feels safe, respected, and supported.
Thank you for your continuous support and dedication to our school community. Together, we make CMIT South Elementary a nurturing and thriving place for our students to learn and grow.
Sincerely,
Ronald A. Miller, Jr

Special Education Appreciation Day - Saturday, December 2, 2023
Saturday, December 2, 2023, is National Special Education Day! Special Education Day marks the anniversary of the nation's first federal special education law--signed by President Gerald Ford on December 2, 1975. A day to celebrate the accomplishments of our Amazing Special Education Department and to spur reform for the future. We would like to take this time to thank each one of our amazing Special Education Department staff members (Ms. Shepherd, Mr. Keenan Jones, Mrs. Ajuwon, and Dr. Jones ) for their hard work and commitment to CMIT South ES. Please stop what you are doing and take the time to THANK THEM by shouting them out with a message, having students create a thank you note/card, and/or by simply saying Thank you when you see them! They truly make a difference! HAPPY SPECIAL EDUCATION DAY!
Professional School Counselor's Den
Hazel Health Services Coming to CMIT South Elementary
What is Hazel Health?
Hazel Health has partnered with Prince George's County Public Schools to provide access to quality healthcare services for all students, at no cost to families, this school year. Students can be referred by the school counselor or their parent/guardian. A designated person at the school or a parent/guardian can initiate a video visit with a Hazel health care provider while your child is at school or at home to provide either physical or mental health services. Therapy sessions with Hazel Health are a safe space and are private and confidential.
How can your child receive services?
Waitlists for mental health services for children are sometimes long or sometimes as parents it's tough to find the time to take our children to appointments which makes it difficult for them to receive the immediate support they need. Hazel Health is geared to bridge that gap. Students are able to receive these services free, virtually and while in school. If you have any questions please feel free to visit their website https://www.hazel.co/ or reach out to me.
Dress for the Weather
Lost and Found
The “Lost and Found” collection bin is located in the cafeteria. Any found articles (coats, hats, gloves, backpacks, lunch boxes, etc.) are placed in the bin. Found small items (keys, glasses, jewelry) are stored in the Main Office. Students may check the “Lost and Found” for lost items before or after school, or during lunch. All items left unclaimed at the end of each academic quarter are donated to charities or are discarded. Parents are strongly encouraged to label all belongings with first and last names.

Grade Level Updates
Thank you families for supporting your child with the Family Tree project. It was such a pleasure to see all of your beautiful family members. The projects were so creative and they did a wonderful job presenting information about their relatives. Our December project will be a vision board for the new year. All information will be given with the new homework packet on Monday 12/4.
WINTER CELEBRATION: Our team is working on details to share soon regarding our winter celebration and activities. Next week, we will be sending home information about dates, possible donations items, and details about our festivities. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
MAP TESTING:
During the week of December 4, your child will take a Winter MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on a computer. MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth. Teachers use results to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students.
MAP Growth tests are unique and adapt to your child’s responses to measure your child’s knowledge. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of where your child is on their learning journey— regardless of whether they are on, above, or below their grade level.
Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores in similar skills and topics and then plan instruction accordingly.
MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students in the same grade and subject with the same starting performance level.
For more information about MAP Growth, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit.

Fourth Grade
Grade Level Updates
We have finished our tremendous thirteenth week of school! We hope you all had a restful and thankful Thanksgiving. The fourth-grade team appreciates all the support that our families have shown this year. Next week we will have our Winter Administration of MAP diagnostic testing. This testing is to see standards that are the areas of growth and areas of concern for our students. As always please ensure that your scholar is present and on time to school with a charged device because the diagnostic is computer-based. Testing will happen Monday- Wednesday with the homeroom teacher. Please check your scholar’s agenda book nightly for updates on homework and notes from the teachers. Finally please label all of your scholar’s belongings in case something is misplaced throughout the day.
Fourth Grade Reminders:
As the weather changes, students must come to school prepared for outdoor recess or outdoor P.E. A suggestion would be to dress scholars in layers so they can remove outer layers as they get warmer.
Scholars should come to school each day with a fully charged Chromebook. As a STEM school technology is utilized in all classes and students are completing assignments digitally. It is difficult to charge Chromebooks during class.
Scholars must have a reusable water bottle. We do not have water bottles to provide to students nor do we have cups to provide water. Water bottles must have a resealable cap to prevent spillage if dropped or knocked over! Scholars can refill their water bottles at one of the filtered water fountains that are provided around the school.
Please check Schoolmax weekly to see the scholar’s updated grades. Canvas is a Learning Management System that scholars utilize to complete assignments and get access to materials. The grades provided in Schoolmax are those that will be used to calculate progress reports and report cards.
If your scholar is absent, please share a note with the homeroom teacher within 3 days of your scholar returning to school. For students to receive make-up work you must provide a note stating; the student’s name, the date of absence, and the reason for absence. Work is provided to students upon their return to school with an absence note.
Each week we suggest checking your scholar's browser history and YouTube history. This is to make sure that your scholar isn’t going to a site or watching videos that you would not approve of. Teachers are limited to only seeing activity on your scholar’s screen when they are in class. We utilize a system called Hapara that allows us to prevent access to certain sites. We are asking that you check your scholar's computer history weekly.
Reading Updates:
This week: Students closed out our first text in Unit 2 “Adaptations” by completing a quiz on the text. Students also created diagrams of bird feathers and determined the causes and effects of feathers.
