Care Solace
Black History Month is a time to celebrate African Americans' achievements and contributions throughout history. This year's theme focuses on Black resistance and how Black communities have fought for their freedoms, against all forms of racism and oppression. Through slavery, segregation, poverty, and the fight for equal rights, the Black community has stood strong and persevered.
To this day, inequalities in our community persist. Black Americans are more likely to live below the poverty line than their white counterparts. They are less likely to have health insurance coverage leading to many not receiving necessary physical and mental health care.
Every day, the Black community continues to work diligently toward a brighter future for the next generations. This month, we will be learning together and sharing resources in honor of Black History Month.
At Lake Shore Public Schools, we believe every person has the right to equitable access to care. We partnered with Care Solace to support the well-being of our students, staff, and family members, regardless of circumstances.
If you or someone you know needs help with mental health or substance use challenges, Care Solace will help you navigate the process and find the best options. If you would like to use Care Solace to help you find a provider:
- Call 888-515-0595. Multilingual support is available 24/7/365.
- Visit caresolace.com/lsps and either search on your own OR click "Book Appointment" for assistance by video chat, email, or phone.
Care Solace is a complimentary and confidential service provided by Lake Shore Public Schools.
Through discussion and action, let's shine a light on the multiple facets of Black resistance and perseverance against all odds.

CHEERING OTHERS' SUCCESS
People with the character strength of cheering others' successes are happy for others and cheer them on when they find success.
Superintendent Dr. DiPonio and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lewis delivered Rookie Recognition certificates and swag to all of our new LSFT staff. It is important to us to make them feel appreciated and valued.
We asked these newbies for a success story and Kindergarten Teacher Rachel Russo responded with a powerful example.
She said, "A short but sweet success story I have had thus far during my time at Lake Shore is managing student behavior/improving my classroom management skills. Being a second-year teacher, I still have a ton to learn and am very eager to become the best educator I can be for my students. When working with littles, it is hard to regulate all of the different emotions that arise throughout the day, however, one particular student struggled to express how they felt and as a result, led to many distractions throughout our learning time. With the help from the amazing staff here at Masonic Heights, as well as Mrs. Kiefer, I was able to learn how to both talk to and understand what this student is feeling as well as utilize different resources that have not only limited this student's behavior but led this student to reach many learning goals! As a result, this student is now able to communicate their thoughts and feelings with me, as well as their classmates, and is able to utilize the calming exercises introduced to them all INDEPENDENTLY- they even do these exercises at home! Watching this student (as well as all of my students) succeed has brought the biggest smile to my face and has helped to highlight one of the top reasons why teaching was the best decision for me. This individual is now one of the highest students in my class and I could not be more proud!
Lake Shore Public Schools has been amazing in helping this success story (and many more) happen and I am very grateful to be a part of this Shorian team! I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings!"
Director of Bands Greg Alter also shared a powerful story. He said, "It has been an absolute honor to come home to Lake Shore Public Schools as their director of bands. I would have to say that my biggest success story was the triumphant Marching Band Season we had. I know these musicians were heartbroken and scared of the unknown at the beginning of the season. Their band camp had been canceled, and the future of the season was in jeopardy. Fast forward, we finished the season with a strong score at our first scholastic marching band competition, as well as an overall Division 1 Superior rating at the MSBOA District 16 Marching Band Festival. The success of this marching band season was not possible without the strong leadership of the administration at LSHS, the LSHS Band Boosters, my Marching Band Staff, and my drum majors, Vance Harvey, Annika Florek, and Simon Kozak. As a result of this, all I have to say is, the future is bright for the Lake Shore Band Program."
From Kindergarten to Lake Shore High School and every level in-between, our rookies have become a special part of the Shorian Nation.
LOVE
People with the character strength of love value close relationships with others and being close to people.
We are thrilled to present our Certificates of Shorian Love for the 2023-2024 school year, presented by our Shorian Nation. National Honors Society and National Junior Honors Society students from Lake Shore High School and Kennedy Middle School made in-person celebratory announcements to 37 businesses and people in total.
Winners were chosen from the results of a Community Favorites Survey, shared in November. In addition to the certificate, winners also received Shorian swag and a hand written card from a student.
These businesses are led by loved people and we are excited to honor the following places.
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate Humility (2/19-23) and Love of Learning (2/26-3/1).
Inspiration
Intergenerational Opportunity with American House
Mrs. Kiefer and Mrs. Collins' 1st/2nd grade students visited American House afternoon to engage in 100s activities with residents that promote memorable learning.
Dressed in 1920s attire, Rockets from Rodgers Elementary were paired with senior citizens in a collaborative effort to support one another in this classic game of Bingo. Mrs. Kiefer was able to help plan this event and observe it in action. She said, "Everyday is a chance to show kindness and you can do this at any age. I love having this opportunity to let my students put our Positivity Project character traits into action! We talked about how we used our character traits of Love and Other People Matter, when we took time out of our day to give a valentine, play a game, and bring a smile to others. The students loved connecting with their new “buddies” and felt so proud of themselves that they brought them joy! Academics are, of course, are extremely important and a top priority. However, I feel my greatest calling as a teacher is to help raise kind, wonderful little humans!" We loved watching both kids and adults exhibit this character strength as they assisted one another with activities.
Playing Bingo with a local senior living community created an intergenerational opportunity to be social while focusing on the common goal of winning the game! In addition, they created necklaces using 100 bead pieces and string, and gave Valentine's cards to each resident as a gift of gratitude for sharing their time.
Residents Joe Elsey and Kathy Brouard enjoyed the partnerships. Since winning came with 50 cent rewards and Joe's student was fortunate enough to win twice, he asked if she could take him out to ice cream. You have to admire the ask! When Kathy won, she sweetly moved the coins over to Brooklyn Davison. Sharing is caring.
In the end, it is all about providing opportunities for our students to increase mental flexibility, improve cardiac health through laughter, and develop relationships. Watch video clip about our American House and LSPS partnership.
Thank you Rachel Smith, Life Enrichment Director at American House, for coordinating this activity with us and providing the juice and muffin treats for our students. We also appreciate Ms. Habrowski and Student Council from Masonic Heights Elementary for making Valentine's Day cards and our LSPS Administration for providing treat bags for residents!
Bonus: Mr. Akerley and Mrs. Tharme's ELA classes researched the 1920s era in preparation for reading The Great Gatsby.
Talented Artists Everywhere
The Emily Tims Committee is pleased to announce Annika Florek as the winner of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Scholarship!
Their mission to inspire young artists to achieve their potential has not wavered since their first day of camp in 1966. We are pleased to continue that tradition in 2024 and look forward sending this young lady from Lake Shore High School to camp this summer. Let's learn more about Annika by sharing her own words, taken from her application:
"Ever since I understood them, I've always been fascinated by the arts. I wanted to learn to play music on any instrument I could get my hands on. Because of this, I'm currently a drum major in my high school marching band. I've also been drawn to theatre and drama, and now I've become one of the heads of my high school stage crew. I'd appreciate being able to use this opportunity to not only hone my skills, but also to make new friends and develop life-long memories. Not to mention, out of all of the similar camps to Blue Lake that I've researched, Blue Lake seems to be the best fit for what I'm looking to achieve."
Talented artists are everywhere at Lake Shore Public Schools.
Using their newly installed kiln, Mrs. Kamis's art classes at Lake Shore High School crafted clay projects.
A kiln is a thermally insulated chamber, a type of oven, that produces temperatures sufficient to complete some process, such as hardening, drying, or chemical changes. Kilns have been used for millennia to turn objects made from clay into pottery, tiles and bricks.
The new kiln was funded in part by the Lake Shore Foundation and by Facilities.
Mrs. Kamis explained, "The educational benefits for ceramics in the art program at Lake Shore High School range from fine motor skills to stress relieving. There are studies that suggest that clay work helps with depression and anxiety. The clay process is mindful and grounding for students. Clay is a humble material that has a bountiful number of rewards."
Thanks to a generous Lake Shore Foundation grant and support of the Lake Shore administration, the high school art department excitedly welcomes the arrival of a new ceramics kiln to further enrich students' sculpture and pottery curriculum, allowing young artists to better understand fundamental 3D concepts and tactile creative processes unique to the clay medium.
Mrs. Kamis is always assigning fun projects in her classes. For example, in Drawing and Design, students created Grid Portraits, self-portraits that experiment with value and contrast in their work.
We were able to chat with Senior Jason Carr and Juniors Delaney Rutt, Alfredo Caicedo, and Robin Melnyk to gain more insights about this assignment.
This was Jason's favorite project so far. He described, "I used 65 squares to plot out my self-portraits in 12 hours. Drawing began for me in Mr. Spriet's class as a doodler." He created many highlights and shadows that added emphasis to his portrait.
Delaney focused on her beautiful hair as part of a vacation self-portrait that she selected. She explained, "Art is a hobby for me. I really enjoy drawing." Mrs. Kamis enjoyed seeing Delaney's growth after 16 weeks of effort in her class.
For Alfredo, he liked the process itself of using grid and going square by square to find his drawing rhythm. He's into architecture so building and constructing his project using attention to detail and a specific process is how he likes to work.
Robin selected a friend to draw. She shared, "Isaiah sat closest to me so I randomly picked him." She's really talented, demonstrating proficient skill in utilizing principles of design and composition with her drawing pencils.
Our District K-12 Art Show will take place on Thursday, April 4th from 6-8:00pm inside Lake Shore High School's Auditorium. Approximately 20 pieces, 100 in total, will be displayed from each building, hand-selected based on exemplary skills, creativity, and innovative ideas!
This solid collection from our Shorian Nation artists will be hung in well-defined sections and signage will be noticeable throughout the auditorium. It is a task meant for many hands, and when arranged, will stimulate and delight our visitors.
We look forward to seeing Jason, Delaney, Alfredo, and Robin's artwork featured in this immersive art show!
Bonus: In Mrs. Lebiecki and Mrs. Stuckey's Lit and Rhetoric class at Lake Shore High School, freshmen completed a Selfie Portrait assignment where students had their portrait taken, outlined it using the light from a window, created a list of character traits that described themselves, and carefully outlined these traits using various font sizes and colors! We love when core teachers add art into their courses!
Double Bonus: Please join us in congratulating Senior Julian Smith for an outstanding accomplishment. The Scholastic Art and Writing Award is a competitive program with over 4400 artworks and 173 portfolios submitted from the southeast Michigan and thumb region, only 116 pieces and 60 portfolios were selected for exhibition this year. Julian received top award of 4 gold keys for painting, mixed media, and photography, 3 honorable mentions, and an honorable mention for his portfolio.
Congratulations Julian for such a prestigious achievement! Best of luck in the national competition.
The Scholastic Art exhibition will be on display until March 1st at the College for Creative Studies Walter B. Ford Building and Manoogian Resource. Hours: M-F 10am - 5pm S-S: 12pm -5pm
Innovation
Pinewood Derby Cars
We visited Mrs. Clow, Mrs. Kemner, and Mrs. Malloy's Physical Science classes at Kennedy Middle School and watched as students drew a basic shapes, clamped their wood down on their tables, and used a hand saw to cut it. These 8th graders brainstormed vehicle names such as Sharkbite, Rancher Jolly, and E-Race-Er.
Adyson Green, Rileigh Peck, Layla Schmidlin, and Justin Trusick loved building and designing their car. Adyson said, "We selected the name Maverick for our car and will be adding jewel headlights to #11. We want to win the race!" The car body adhered to the following guidelines:
- Weight not to exceed 5 ounces
- Length not to exceed 7"
- Width and height not to exceed 2.75"
- Center rail width no less than 1.75"
Fast forward and we see small, driverless wooden cars powered only by gravity. Students studied Newton's 2nd Law and were able to design their own Pinewood Derby Car, from the kit provided, to compete in the Kennedy Pinewood Derby Championship. Principal Mr. Johnson and Assistant Principal Mr. Gaffigan will participate in this challenge, too.
A DonorsChoose fundraiser paid for the Pinewood Derby kits this year; This nonprofit organization allows individuals to donate directly to public school classroom projects. The classes meet in the cafeteria to watch as the races began. Antwan Smith, Nathaniel Deel-Smith, and Jack Lemke created Leglorius King James. Antwan said, "We named our car after LeBron James and his 2016 finals performance!" Thank you to all teams for your hard work!
CTE Programming
College is not for everyone, but earning a great living can be. Lake Shore strongly believes in funding opportunities for our students to learn specialized skills and carving a direct path to a job after high school graduation.
Our Construction Trades program, in partnership with our MISD, was awarded $73,000 in CTE grant funding for the purchase of 3 CAT Construction Simulators:
- SimLite Dozer w/VR
- SimLite Exavator w/VR
- SimLite Compact Track Loader w/VR
These Cat Simulators are built with authentic CAT controls and expertise of Caterpillar subject-matter experts with hundreds of measurable benchmarks to track learner progress. The exclusive Walkaround training teaches pre-operation machine inspection procedures with multiple training exercises based on real-world machine applications.
More specifically, our 16 Building Renovation students will build on techniques throughout trainings and skills using VR editions that help them gain greater depth perception, making exercises such as loading the truck and dumping into the crusher more accurate when judging distance from the bucket to the target.
The goal is for our students to become certified in these 3 areas and Junior Matt Rangel is looking forward to that challenge.
Matt's family lineage has always explored careers in the trades, apprenticeship opportunities, paid hands-on-learning and on-the-job training, and union benefits. His dad chose to work with 300 HVAC units at the Henry Ford Museum. His uncle enjoys working in the air compressor industry. And his grandfather uses woodworking as a hobby inside his basement. Because of these influential men combined with his classroom experiences, Matt is building a foundation of knowledge in skilled trades.
Matt isn't alone when it comes to considering a career in the skilled trades. Several Lake Shore alumni are living out their dreams by gaining and then applying skills necessary for their current vocation.
Class of 2019 Lake Shore graduate Joe Coffey works for Watertaps in Wixom as a Pipeline Technician where he runs excavators and makes live water main repairs, taps, line stops and valve insertions. He also has experience working on both underground and earth moving crews running equipment such as excavators, dozers, front-end loaders, rock-trucks.
Class of 2018 Lake Shore graduate Lucas Mackewich works for Rauhorn Electric as a Heavy Machine Operator. He loads and unloads equipment from vehicles, completes inspections, and drives to complete tasks at construction sites.
Class of 2017 Lake Shore graduate Eric Copp works for Universal Home Services and remodels bathrooms and kitchens by working on demolition and molding, tile, and drywall work.
They love their careers and often put in long hours to ensure the work is done.
As the cost of a college education continues to rise and the burden of student loan debt weighs heavily on young people, it is essential to consider alternative paths to financial success and stability. We love providing opportunities for our students to learn in the classroom and take that knowledge directly into the industry.
Lake Shore High School currently offers the following CTE classes and/or programs:
- Building Renovations
- Media Productions I and II
- Web Design I and II
- Accounting I and II
- Cyber Security I and II
- Marketing Sales
- Digital Design and Microsoft IT
- Digital Design and Web Design
Be Our Guest
Motivational and guest speakers in schools expose students to real world experiences from people who are in unique career fields or life circumstances, and are the link students make between what they learn in the textbook and information shared from an expert.
Three hundred years ago, a mixed blood (called Metis’) scout disappeared into the wilderness to explore and trade. He found his way to the Great Lakes, where the Ojibwa People of the region took him in. He was given a name and became part of their tribe.
Genot Picor visited our 3rd graders at Rodgers Elementary to learn about the Native Americans and the fur trade and to share the stories, songs, and dances of the places he explored, from the Great Lakes, to the Ohio, Mississippi, St. Lawrence, and Mohawk Valleys. Genot Picor Presents “Stories, Songs and Dances of the Metis’ Voyageur.”
Ryder Shank from Mrs. Nicoll's class had the opportunity to dress like a voyager in the wintertime. His entire class looked through rocks, animal tracks and skins, and other artifacts.
Genot Picor (formerly Piqueur) is a storyteller, musician and dancer. In addition, he is a published free-lance journalist, retired public school teacher consultant and grant writer. Picor holds a Master’s Degree in Theatre Arts/ Interpretive/Performance Studies from Eastern Michigan University, specializing in oral tradition, narrative studies and the anthropology of performance. Genot uses all his talents to bring an interactive frontier history alive to audiences of all ages.
Bonus: Marshall from PAW Patrol and the show at The Fox Theatre visited Violet Elementary and his handler read stories to 75 Kindergarteners! These All-Stars just couldn't contain their excitement.
Marshall is a Dalmatian puppy and one of the seven main protagonists in the TV series PAW Patrol. He is the 3rd member of the PAW Patrol and the team's fire pup, as well as the medic pup (as of "Pups Save Jake"). His primary purpose is to check for fires and extinguish them, and to use his ladder to rescue animals from high places.
Celebration
Jump Rope for Heart
We're speechless!
With over 400 students inside Violet Elementary, All-Stars raised a whopping $37,463.73 for the Kids Heart Challenge in 2024.
Violet is currently ranked 1st in the state of Michigan!
At the assembly, students showed off their jump roping skills, shared their heart stories, displayed their heart dedications, and were awarded the newest banner and medals. Mrs. Pecararo organizes this important fundraiser with help from Senior Youth Market Director Cheryl Muscott.
Fifth grader Amelia Chalkey raised $6,100, beating last year's $5,686.74 total and earning her 1st place again. We asked Amelia's mom, Jennifer Chalkey, how her daughter raised such a substantial amount and she credits her determination to help others and work ethic as she canvased her neighborhood asking for donations. Her Great Grandma Rebecca Holland passed away from heart complications; Her reason was real. She has raised over $16,000 during her time as a student at Violet.
Muscott shared, “I’m so proud of Lake Shore for their hard work. Year after year, Violet has beat the average total donation of $3,200 in Macomb County and has been the top fundraiser in the state for years.” Violet has participated in this challenge for 24 years.
Our elementary students continue jumping to get healthy in honor of others! Congratulations to 2nd place Averi Gray, 3rd place Preston Javenkowski, 4th place Caleb Javenkowski, and 5th place Addison Argue; The top 5 raised over $1,000 each!
Lake Shore Foundation
THANK YOU, LAKE SHORE FOUNDATION, FOR YOUR CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS!
Since 1986, the LSFEE has awarded over 500 grants; During the 2022-23 school year, their generosity has funded over $66,000 in projects! That's incredible!
The Foundation was established in 1986 for the purpose of using charitable contributions to benefit all Lake Shore Public Schools' students. They are now looking for new donations — raising money to meet the educational needs of Lake Shore's youth.
Their mission is to help students reach their goals of excellence by funding support for important educational activities not provided by the schools.
The Foundation focuses its efforts on these areas:
- Encouraging creative teaching and innovative classroom ideas and practices
- Facilitating student development through enrichment activities, scholarships, and motivational programs.
- Purchasing equipment and other durable materials to improve hands-on learning.
National School Counseling Week
We are celebrating National School Counseling Week! This week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
School counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; for working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; for focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career and social/emotional development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.
“I’ve learned how to calm myself at my desk when I feel stressed. I take deep breaths and nobody even knows I’m doing it,” one tenth grader said. Mindful moments have become commonplace for Lake Shore students who have learned how to incorporate positive personal strategies into their daily experiences.
At Lake Shore High School, our counseling team uses Xello to help students document their journey as they build self-knowledge, explore post-secondary options, create plans, and continually reassess as they take in new knowledge, skills, and experiences. In fact, 20% of student logins happen outside of school hours where students take assessments to help them better understand their interests and build portfolios that showcases their skills and abilities.
“School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career options and social/emotional skills,” said Jill Cook, American School Counselor Association executive director. “School counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success.”
As part of its celebration for National School Counseling Week, Lake Shore Public Schools is proud to recognize Lake Shore High School Counselors Robert Asaro, Amanda Nabors, and Anne Rancilio, North Lake High School Counselor Melissa Oliver, and Kennedy Middle School Counselors Bob Plotkowski and Colleen Stafford. College Adviser Karah Tanski is also an important part of the team. Parents or community members with specific questions or concerns about school counseling programs should contact the school counselors at their local schools.
More general information can also be found on ASCA’s website, www.schoolcounselor.org.
National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day
It was National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day! Detective Glen Hartman has partnered Lake Shore Public Schools for the next 5 years to keep students and staff safe. Detective Hartman has been with the police department for 7.5 years.
Detective Hartman works closely with administration to ensure safety in the buildings. He is present in both the middle school and high school multiple days a week, with visits to the elementary schools periodically. His favorite part of the job is the positive interactions with citizens and the community. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking and running. Detective Hartman and his wife Katie have a 2-year-old son named Lucas and a Black Lab mix named Luna.
In addition, our District Safety Team from Fortis Group, Michigan's leading protection, investigation, and training firm, has a combined 160 years in law enforcement experience. We leverage their expertise inside our schools to keep continue to make safety and security a priority. Thank you Andy Plemmons, Charles Medley, Tom Marinkovich, Michelle Land, Shawn Mortier, Jason Nagy, and Christopher Land.
Our children are our most precious resource. Continued acts of hyperviolence in schools raises legitimate concern over how to maintain safe and secure educational institutions.
Possessing a wide array of inter-related services, Fortis Group leverages its security, training and investigative experience to assist educational institutions with protecting its students, faculty, visitors, and property. Fortis Group’s School Safety Division was formed to answer the demand for a more professional level of school protection. A team that is friendly, welcoming but a vigilant physical presence to deter crime and violence. Fortis Group offers a wide range of school security services, allowing for a program customized to each school’s specific needs.
Operations Manager Andrew Plemmons described this service as mission driven. He said, "We are here to secure buildings, but most importantly, build relationships for the physical and mental wellbeing of kids. Our community bonds are a difference-maker."
