SHARK SHOUTOUTS
Shark Shoutout to every student ambassador who helped with Grade 7 Step Up Day!! This day required enormous flexibility, hard work, and strong leadership skills; I am so proud of you all for doing it all with smiles on your face and welcoming energy for the middle schoolers. THANK YOU THANK YOU. -Mrs. Caitlyn Hall
- SHARK SHOUT OUT to Macarena Hidalgo Alvarez for her wonderful presentation about her life in Chile to the Creative Writing II: Global Outlook class. ANOTHER SHOUT OUT to Enelisha Minaya and Keitty Pena Moncion for their fabulous presentation about their lives in The Dominican Republic. The CWII class enjoyed learning so much about these fascinating countries!! -Ms. Lisa Forte-Doyle
- We are writing to let you know that three of your students have been working very hard outside of the classroom. Hillevi Segerson, Emily Coughlin, and Jasper Hayes should be commended for their dedication and persistence as they have been volunteering at the Eldredge Public Library throughout the school year. This is especially impressive considering that the pandemic still places limitations on how much time and in what ways they can volunteer. These persistent students took the time to create gifts and art to distribute to elderly isolated and homebound community members for the holidays, they have helped with displays, and to plan our children's programming. Hillevi and Jasper have both completed six hours of volunteering, and Emily has thirteen hours and counting! These students truly help to guide our library programming and we felt we should let you know what a difference they continue to make in our community. Monomoy High School should be very proud to have such wonderful representatives! -Meghan Kemp & Leah Dower, Youth Services, Eldredge Public Library

The members of Ms. Waystack's Advanced Drawing and Painting class held their big reveal of "The Fritz Project" this week. Officer Clarke and K9 Fritz came back to see the work that their visit inspired.
Students donated their work to adorn Officer Clarke's office.
Statement from Officer Clarke:
"K9 Fritz had the opportunity to visit the advanced drawing and painting class at MRHS a few months ago. He was invited back to their class today and was surprised to find out that the students had been working on "The Fritz Project" and wanted to present him with some pieces of their work. As you can imagine, Fritz was speechless and overwhelmed with pride and appreciation. What a talented group of kids, thank you Shark Nation!"

PBS Documentary/"Hiding In Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness" a film by Ken Burns
"Mental illness is one of the most significant health crises in the world—as pervasive as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease—but it often exists in secret and is endured in isolation. It’s the place where sadness leaves off, and depression begins; where nervousness becomes anxiety; excitement becomes mania, and habit becomes addiction. It’s the place where simply living becomes painful.
It affects all ages, in families both rich and poor, healthy and dysfunctional. Trauma can be the trigger—from personal crises such as divorce and neglect to environmental disasters, racial injustice, and pandemics. Over time, the symptoms can progress, and lead to increasingly extreme behaviors—like eating disorders, self-harm, and thoughts of suicide.
The issues surrounding mental illness are extraordinarily complex. The risk factors are daunting, the economics bewildering, and the politics contentious. But the most important step—and often the most difficult one—is to start talking about it. Hiding in Plain Sight will bring that conversation into homes, schools, the workplace, and community organizations across the country.
The two-part, four-hour film follows the journeys of more than 20 young Americans from all over the country and all walks of life, who have struggled with thoughts and feelings that have troubled—and, at times—overwhelmed them. They share what they have learned about themselves, their families, and the world in which they live. Through first-person accounts, the film presents an unstinting look at both the seemingly insurmountable obstacles faced by those who live with mental disorders and the hope that many have found after that storm. In the process, they will directly confront the issues of stigma, discrimination, awareness, and silence, and, in doing so, support the ongoing shift in the public perception of mental illness today.
Executive produced by Ken Burns, co-directed by Erik Ewers and Christopher Loren Ewers, produced by Julie Coffman, and written by David Blistein, Hiding in Plain Sight, the first film of Our Mental Health Crisis, premieres June 27-28, 2022. (4 hours)" from Ken Burns.com
