Mindfulness in Action
Through mindfulness, students are taught to anchor themselves in the present moment, cultivating a deep awareness. They learn to breathe, observe their thoughts, and embrace their emotions.
Look at those poses! What a wonderful experience where learning is put into practice.
SNAP is a Wrap!
Our 5th-grade SNAP Ambassadors did a fantastic job with the direction of Kim Strasser. Each of them exemplifies the SNAP philosophy and are leaders in our community. Thank you to Ms. Kim Strasser for bringing this program to our students annually.
**Updated** i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment
Your child recently completed the i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment in Reading and Mathematics.
This year, we will not send home the iReady Family Reports; however, you may access them by logging into your child's clever portal or iReady account.
To access the clever portal from home, go to https://clever.com/in/msdk12 using their Google email (year of graduationfirstname.lastname@msdk12.net)and password. Ex: 31jane.doe@msdk12.net.
If you'd like a paper copy, please get in touch with your child's teacher. Below is a newsletter with a short video and instructions on accessing your student reports.
Based on this diagnostic assessment and other assessment information, teachers will provide differentiated instruction in a blended learning environment, including a mixture of teacher and online instruction. The i-Ready online instruction is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards and is designed to be challenging, engaging, and interactive. The experience attracts and holds your child’s interest while teaching important skills and concepts. Students can also access these lessons at home through Clever. In addition, the link below provides families with information about iReady and how families can help at home.

Please note that this diagnostic assessment is just a snapshot assessment of performance. If you have any questions about the report, please get in touch with your child’s teacher or contact me.
Fall Harvest/Halloween Parade
Sussex will host a Fall Harvest/Halloween Parade on the field in the rear of the building on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Since our parade time has been coordinated with Alfred Vail, we hope all of our Sussex and Vail families can attend. If parents choose to attend in costume, please, no masks.
In the event of rain, parades will take place indoors as scheduled. Unfortunately, only HSA classroom parents will be allowed at the indoor procession.
Our Fall Harvest/Halloween Day guidelines are:
1. All costumes must be school-appropriate for the age level.
2. Students choosing to dress can wear their costumes to school, provided they can navigate their school day as usual. Children must be able to sit, walk, breathe, see, and hear (no masks that cover the face).
3. Costume guidelines include NO pretend “prop” weapons such as water pistols, knives, or swords.
If your student does not participate in these activities, it is still a day dedicated to academic instruction. We encourage all students to attend the full day of school as our Fall Harvest/Halloween Parade does not begin until 2:00 p.m. Alternate activities will be available for those who do not wish to participate.
Attendance Matters
Research shows that missing 10 percent of school, or about 18 days, negatively affects a student's academic performance. These habits are building blocks for academic achievement and personal growth, setting the stage for a bright future. Unless your child is sick, we expect your child to attend school every day.
