Happy Summer!
Ben Barbier on his final day with students.
Heading Into Summer—Stay Round, Stay Curious!
Hello Sleeping Giant Families,
Summer is officially here! Before our incredible office staff takes a well-deserved break, here is one last newsletter to celebrate a wonderful school year and look forward to a relaxing summer. We are here through June 23rd, then return on July 24th.
My family and I are preparing for a trip to New Hampshire and Maine to see relatives. Traveling with our two- and four-year-olds can be an adventure (to say the least!), but their excitement for beach days always makes the journey worth it. When we're not on the East Coast, we’ll be around town enjoying our beautiful community, so we hope to see many of you!
Don't Be a Flat Rock!
At our recent 8th-grade celebration, Ben Barbier gave an inspiring speech sharing his "Three Laws." One memorable law: "Don’t be a flat rock." Ben explained that a flat rock lacks inertia—it doesn’t roll forward, has no drive, and thus no agency. A round rock, however, keeps moving, building momentum and staying active.
Let’s take Ben’s advice to heart this summer. Keep your kids "round" by encouraging them to read, explore new things, and engage in educational activities—even simple daily conversations. Here are some quick tips:
Reading Together: Even just 15 minutes daily makes a huge impact. Even if they see you reading, it matters!
Real-World Math: Let kids help measure ingredients for meals or handle transactions at the store.
Nature Walks: Discuss plants, wildlife, and ecosystems. Yampatika can be a great resource for this.
Creative Journaling: Draw pictures or write brief reflections on daily adventures. There are many art camps that are staff are working as well!
Keeping the momentum of learning alive over summer ensures our students return eager and ready in August!

This is a reminder that all parents and guardians of students who attend SSSD schools must complete the Annual Update by May 30 to update their proof of residency within SSSD boundaries.

Readers can log their reading (of at least 15 minutes a day) on the paper brochure available at the Library or online using Beanstack. For every 30 days that you read, you can get a free book at the library or earn $10 to spend at Steamboat's only independent book store, Off the Beaten Path. Vision and Mission
Joe's Reading List
Just Finished
I just finished The River of Doubt, a true account of Theodore Roosevelt’s harrowing expedition through the Amazon. It’s a story of endurance, danger, and discovery—equal parts history and survival tale—that left me in awe of both the landscape and the man.
Currently Reading
Up Next
Next on my reading list is Rabbit, Run by John Updike—a searing portrait of a young man torn between freedom and responsibility. Updike’s emotionally charged yet precise prose follows Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom as he flees his conventional life in search of something more, no matter the cost.
