Understanding the Renewal Credit Process: How are renewal credits processed?
Licensure renewal
- An essential function that combines the evaluation of quality engagement in professional development activities and adherence to SCDE renewal criteria.
- Educators who hold a professional license must renew this credential every five years.
- Opportunities for renewal credit should align with your area(s) of certification, your professional growth and development plan and/or the FMSD strategic plan.
- Upload all outside opportunities for renewal credits into Professional Learning.
- 120 credits or hours of engagement is required for renewal.
- Read to Succeed Requirement (more details below)
* Effective July 2020, you are NO LONGER REQUIRED to take 3 graduate hours to renew a professional certificate for educators who exclusively hold a bachelor's degree.

Proviso 1.105 Read to Succeed Endorsement (2023-24)
The Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2023-2024 includes Proviso 1.105, on-year legislation that suspends Read to Succeed (R2S) endorsement requirements for certificate renewal for some educators.
This guidance document provides information for South Carolina districts and educators regarding the implementation of the proviso. This one-year legislation will primarily impact educators who, otherwise, would need to earn the one-course R2S Requirement to renew a certificate expiring on or before June 30, 2024. Educators who must earn the R2S Literacy Teacher endorsement are not impacted by Proviso 1.105 since they have two renewal cycles to obtain the four-course endorsement.

FMSD Print Catalog in the Professional Learning Library
Our FMSD Professional Learning Library houses our district's professional book collection. The Library is home to over 300 texts that can be checked out by individual educators or small groups for educator-driven book studies. Each of the titles in the library are approved for renewal credit. Educators may design studies and receive pre-approval for credit allowances through the Self-Paced Credit option listed on the External Credit Request tab in the Professional Learning Management System. Check out the FMSD Professional Learning Library Website to view the collection, learn about the checkout process, and see the featured Book of the Month!
