M.A. Lynch Elementary March ROAR

From the Principal:
Dear Lynch Families,
It is hard to believe that Spring is almost here! I would like to thank you for all of your support during the first half of the year. Students and staff have been working hard to live up to our mission and vision: Empower All: Learn, Grow, Succeed! With the coming of Spring we are as busy as ever; please read through the following updates:
This Friday- Join us for the Family Glow Dance! Lynch Lion Pride (PTO) is hosting this fun family event. See the flier in this newsletter. Let’s Dance!
Conferences: Spring Conferences are almost here! Our goal is to meet with EVERY Lynch family either in person, over the phone or virtually to share about their growth so far this year. Conferences will mostly be held the week of March 20th-24th. Classroom teachers will be contacting you with the specific times and dates. I hope all of you can attend!
Attendance Goal: 95% everyday is our goal! All Cubs Count and Everyday Matters! Everyday we are working to have all Cubs at school. We are keeping track of the number of days that we have 95% or greater. When we have ten days we will celebrate! Thank you for doing all you can to help make this happen!!
Behavior Improvements: Congrats to the students who earned their Character charms in February!!!. We had 300 students receive their charm this month!! Students are receiving tickets for positive choices while being safe, respectful and responsible and receiving Cub Prides for going above and beyond! Please congratulate your child on their outstanding efforts!
FOCUS Goal this year- Student to Student Kindness: I shared at the beginning of the year that we are working hard on how students treat each other. This was the lowest score we had on a student survey therefore we have made student to student kindness a major focus for us this year. Classrooms are discussing how students treat each other everyday. Once a week they tally on a Kindness Counts sheet how kind students have been to them in the past week. As a school we average our schoolwide Kindness score and share it out with everyone. Last week was our best week yet with a school wide score of 4.5 out of 5!!! Way to go Lynch Cubs!
Donuts with GrownUps: Please join us on March 16th for our next Donuts with GrownUps.. Our focus for the month of March is Honesty. If you would like to preview the materials or view the video clip ahead of time, please just call the office and make an appointment and we would be happy to share it with you.
Coffee Chat: At 9:00 after Donuts with GrownUps meet us for a Coffee Chat. This month’s focus will be: Positive Behavior System, Smarter Balanced testing and anything else you would like to discuss. Hope to see you there!
Smarter Balanced Assessment: In April our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will begin their state assessments. The Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) accurately measures student progress toward college and career readiness. The assessment is aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). We have carefully scheduled testing times to minimize disruption of regular classroom routines. I will share detailed information in the April newsletter.
Parent Survey: After your parent conference, the classroom teacher will send home a digital survey. Please take the time to fill it out and give us your feedback. We want to be the best we can be and we need your input to know what we are doing well and what we need to work on. Thank you!
iReady Reading and Math program= Positive Results: Our Winter Diagnostic data shows our students are making great growth! Students are able to individually receive support on skills they most need help with. Teachers will share individual student growth with you at conferences.
Support Butter Braid Fundraiser- Sales begin March 1st! Our goal is to bring in more art and music opportunities, and STEAM and P.E. supplies to our students with the funds earned during our Annual Spring Fundraiser. The flier is coming home this week and there is more information here in the newsletter. Thank you for your support!
Thank you for your continued partnership! Have a wonderful Spring Break with your children.
Respectfully,
Rayna Nordstrom
¡Vamos a bailar!
Respetuosamente,
Rayna Nordström

Notes from the Nurse:
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month
Brain Injury Awareness Month, recognized each March, provides an important opportunity to bring attention to the prevention of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and to promote strategies to improve the quality of life for persons living with TBI and their families. TBIs, caused by an impact or force to the head or body or a penetrating injury to the head, affect millions of U.S. persons each year.
Brain Injury Prevention:
When it comes to sports injuries, the CDC recognizes the importance of creating a safe sports culture and having a concussion action plan in place. Children and teens should also wear the right helmet for the activity and make sure it is properly fitted. While there is no “concussion-proof” helmet, the CDC’s HEADS UP Concussion and Helmet Safety app includes a 3D helmet fit feature with instruction on the proper fit, care and safety of helmets.
Other ways to prevent common brain injuries in children are:
Using properly installed and fitted, age-appropriate car and booster seats.
Wearing seat belts.
Using gates at the top and bottom of the stairs to prevent infant and toddler falls.
Look for playgrounds with soft surfaces.
Know the Signs and Symptoms of Brain Injury:
According to the CDC, it’s important to check for signs of concussion or a more serious brain injury after a blow or jolt to the head, and continue watching for signs or symptoms that may appear even days later. Signs of a concussion can be as subtle as your child just not feeling right after an injury, and may progress over hours or days.
Stay safe and healthy!

Every Day Matters!
It doesn't matter whether absences are excused or unexcused, each missed day represents missed learning time. Missed days add up quickly. When a student misses as few as two days a month, that is 10% of the school year. This increases the risk of academic and social-emotional struggles.
Did you know?
- Children who are chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade?
- Chronic Absenteeism can occur when students miss a day or two every few weeks.
- Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate from high school and keep a job.
