ELC at George Earle Weekly Update

We end February and start out March by recognizing Read Across America. This is a national movement that began in 1998 to get kids excited about reading. We are excited to participate as so many other schools across the country do so. Within the week is the birthday of beloved children's book author, Dr. Seuss. At the ELC, we feature a different Dr. Seuss book each day of the week with all kindergarten classes reading that day's book and celebrating with activities that tie into the book and dressing up with the theme each day. It is a wonderful showcase of some of the Dr. Seuss favorites. Watch closely, that Cat in the Hat pops in for a visit every year to soak up the glory and tribute of the week! We invite you to join in the fun this week as we ramp up the excitement of reading!

Dr. Seuss books are so much fun for so many reasons. One of their favorite reasons... all the RHYMING WORDS! They get so excited when they realize something is rhyming, so this is a great time to practice those rhyming words. There are also several goals we are working on in reading- so take this opportunity to bond with your kiddo over a book and ask them some questions about what you just read.

~Ask them the main idea of the story and some of the key details of what you just read.

~Ask them to identify some of the rhyming words in the story or to make up their own (as Dr. Seuss LOVES to do 🥰)

~Ask them to flip through the book before you read it to them and ask them if there are any words they recognize. They love spotting those words they know on a page and telling you all about it!

~Ask them some questions about the story. What happened to who and where? Or ask them to add on to the story. If the story is open at the end, ask them what they think will happen next!
