Unck Updates
We are already finished with term one grading period and in the third month of school. We have accomplished a lot in such a short period and are excited about the start of the year. To recap the beginning of our year, we are continuing our PBIS Bronco Bucks reward system where students are acknowledged for displaying Bernal RISE expectations. Students who come to school with their ID Badges on and ready to learn are often rewarded with Bronco Bucks before they even get into their first class. The student and staff identification badges this year helps with our goal of keeping our school safe and secure, as well as helping us identify and recognize students in order to acknowledge when they are meeting school behavior expectations.
We have also finished our first academic benchmark assessment. The district assessment system we use is i-Ready. This assessment was given to all students in their Language Arts and Math classes. i-Ready assesses where students are currently performing in reading and math. The results of these assessments help teachers understand their students' strengths as well as areas of need. Speaking of strengths, our athletic and afterschool sports program is already underway. We are coming to a close of our cross-country season. Congratulations to the seven students who have qualified for cross-country finals. Our girls' basketball season will begin soon.
Our lunchtime activity schedule has been full of awesome activities created by Ms. Johnson that keep the students engaged, excited, and full of school spirit. In addition, we have Mr. Reza who plays music outside once a week during lunchtime. Students are able to request songs by using Bronco Bucks. Our leadership students have been working hard building school spirit by creating and displaying posters around our school and helping new students to Bernal get acclimated to school.
A huge thank you to the families that attended our first Home and School Club meeting. We have an official HSC board. In the near future we will start selling student spirit wear. We will also be holding our first A.A. Koffee Klatch parent meeting, Bernal ELAC parent meeting, and our first School Site Council (SSC) meeting. Participating in parent meetings are a great way to partner and collaborate with the school so that we can continue to make Bernal the best school. Continue to watch for school messages on Parent Square and on our school website. You are always welcome to email me at tunck@ogsd.net for any questions or support that may be needed.

The Scoop with Smith
We hope your family enjoyed the fall break. I am sure that everyone is looking forward to the Thanksgiving break. Next thing you know the winter holidays will be upon us.
So, what's the scoop? Well, let me tell you...
- Club Day is Friday, October 8. Various clubs will have a table outside during lunch and students are encouraged to sign up.
- School is in session on Monday, October 11 - It is not a school holiday for Oak Grove.
- Spirit Days - October 15 is Nike vs Adidas Day and October 29 is Costume Day.
- Retake School Picture Day is Friday, October 22. Students are required to wear their student ID badges everyday. The first time a student is not wearing his/her/their ID will be given a warning. The second time an ID is not worn at school, s/he/they will call home, receive detention, and must pay $5 for an ID to be reprinted if it is lost.
- Band (7th/8th) - Virtual Fall Concert is on October 20 @ 6PM and Jr Saints Night Football is on October 22 @ 5PM @ STHS (optional).
- Boys Basketball Tryouts is the week of November 8. Start date is November 15.
- Please make sure your child is following the dress code. We are still having issues with students wearing crop/midriff tops. Crocs are not appropriate shoes to wear at school.
- Tardies - Students who are tardy to advisory period at least twice a week will receive detention. Students who are tardy to any one class three or more times will receive community service. Being on time to class and staying for the entire period will increase student learning and build stronger relationships among students and teachers.
We appreciate your support and partnership. Go, Broncos!

Hello Bernal Families!
We have now been in school for a full trimester and have had a chance to get acquainted with the students. It has been a true pleasure getting to know all of the students and seeing their smiles and joy once again. So far, the students have demonstrated all of the RISE behaviors and shown us all the resolve they possess in these ever changing times.
Our students have had a chance to enjoy music at lunch, creating tie day shirts, do tug-o-war competitions, earn Bronco bucks for RISE behaviors, enjoy a robust advisory curriculum, and many other engaging activities. Many more culture building activities are to follow and we all look forward to continue to add to this already amazing place.
I want to thank all of our teachers and staff that have put in so much hard work already to make this place the warm, inviting and academically engaging place it is today. Thank you to all the parents and families who have supported all the efforts of all of us here at the school, and thank you most especially to all of our students. Our students are the reason why Bernal is such a wonderful place to work and learn. They are the backbone and the heartbeat of this community and we are all so blessed to be in their lives and support them along their life journey.
I look forward to all the adventures ahead and will do my best to be a string support to all of the Bernal community. Have a fun and safe October!
Just remember that:
You Can
You Will
It's Possible
You'll be Great Today
You'll be Great Tomorrow
We are Bernal!!!
Fantastic!
Take care, & Go Broncos!!!
