KMS WEEKLY UPDATE
WINTER IS COMING & A NOTE ABOUT KMS SPORTS & ACTIVITIES
Dear Families -
We would like to send a friendly reminder that here in Kodiak, the weather can be fairly unpredictable. However, on most days, we do continue to have outdoor recess year-round if possible. Please send your students to school with appropriate gear for the cold/rainy/snowy weather that sometimes catches us by surprise. It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. If the weather is too extreme at recess time, of course, we will have indoor recess.
Additionally, as we move into fall, KMS sports and activities are beginning to ramp up. At KMS, we offer a fully inclusive activity program as long as students meet the grade requirements outlined in the student handbook. Our goal is to welcome everyone as enrollment numbers allow. With that said, the Yearbook, Student Government, and Dance Team are just getting started and are open to all grades. The anticipated enrollment for basketball will limit this activity to 7th and 8th-grade students. The selection process for travel or performances is determined by the coaches and sponsors. We are working with the KIBSD Activities Director to create a parallel basketball program for our 6th graders – more to come. Please reach out with any questions.

In PE this month, 8th graders will begin a swim unit, to take place at the City of Kodiak Swimming Pool located behind the middle school. During classes, students will walk over, change into their swim wear, have their lesson in the pool, dry off, change back into their school clothes, and return to the middle school.
The first day, Monday, October 2, students will not be in the water. This day will be for an orientation to the pool facilities, student expectations, and pool rules.
The following days, students WILL be in the water and are expected to bring a towel, swim wear, and a bag to contain their wet belongings:

HELP US REVAMP OUR RAMP ART
Mrs. King’s 8th graders went on a field trip to help secure marine debris in order to refurbish the bus ramp art.
Good news is that our beaches are clean, the bad news is that we still need plastic donations.
We are looking for cleaned shampoo & conditioner bottles, water bottle and Gatorade lids, wipes containers, detergent jugs, condiment/coffee/syrup and other food containers that are made from a heavier colored plastic.
Please do not throw these away, but collect them for us and send them to the office with your student.
Thank you so very much!
KMS PTSA MEETING, 10/12 @ 6PM
PLEASE SAVE YOUR USED PLASTIC BAGS FOR US!
The PTSA Cookie Dough Fundraiser kicked off today and will end on October 13.
Cookie dough will arrive on island near the end of November. We have to distribute that dough very quickly, and 1 tub weighs THREE POUNDS!
To help us expedite pick-up and loading your orders into your car, we are begging, PLEADING, for your used plastic bags. Our volunteers would really appreciate it!
Bags can be sent in with your student and dropped in the front office, or brought to the October 12 PTSA meeting.
COMING SOON
Here you will find events that will be happening in the next couple of months, but not during the coming week.
We want to give our families plenty of time to plan around our activities and opportunities.
Details will be posted later in this newsletter and/or another newsletter in the near future.
