Principal's Pen
We are excited to see you at Parent-Student-Teacher conferences next week! Please prepare for conferences by following these suggestions:
- Watch for a reminder email from SignUp Genius two days before your conference.
- Be prompt or early for your assigned conference time.
- Please bring your child to the conference.
- The conference time will pass quickly. Help the teacher keep your conversation to 15 minutes. The teacher will want to give the next family their time as well.
- In advance, write down any questions you have. Bring them to the conference.
- Visit the Book Fair in the media center. All students get to put their name in a drawing for free book boxes, no purchase is necessary.
- Admire the Fountain in the library. Every student contributed a piece to the fountain. Thank you Mrs. Lillig and Mrs. Munsterman for an amazing extension activity to compliment our One Read this year!
- Claim items in the Lost-n-Found.
Unit News
Unit A
We are looking ahead to our winter party theme of "Holidays Around the World” on December 15, and if you are interested in coordinating please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher. We are looking for a few!
Unit B
Unit B is very thankful for those who planned and worked our fall party. It was a huge success! Everyone had a great time. Unit B enjoyed munch-n-read.
It is getting cold outside! Please send your child with clothes that reflect the weather each day.
Unit C
Please note that information about the Biz Town trip has been sent home with your child in their take-home folder, which was sent on Thursday. Since the trip is outside of town, we will be returning to Ridgeway on December 20 at 4:15 PM. Please ensure that your child has appropriate arrangements made for that day. The documents included in the folder are a permission slip, a volunteer interest form, and an optional t-shirt and bag order form. These forms need to be signed and returned to school by November 9. If you have any questions regarding the Biz Town trip, please contact Mr. Gray.
***Fifth Grade Families: Remember the deadline to turn in your application for attending Jefferson Middle School next year is Friday, November 10.

Media Center Happenings Fall 2023
In Media Class, students learn foundational technology skills and how to use technology safely. Some of the skills we have worked on this trimester include: proper iPad care, online safety, typing, coding, and how to navigate various district resources and databases like ST Math, Pebble Go, and World Book Kids. Students have also done some creating using programs like Draw and Tell, Keynote, and Pages.
Another area of the Media Program is incorporating technology and design thinking in the classroom. Unit A students have been using the app Draw and Tell in their classroom to capture their thinking of the beginning, middle, and end of stories and then record their voice giving a retell of the plot. Unit A students have also been exploring several Osmo games-especially in math. These games utilize the iPad’s camera and a mirror piece so that students use real manipulatives and interact with the on-screen games.
Unit B did a big coding and geography unit this trimester. They learned about Missouri and then worked on geography skills by labeling a large Missouri Map. They then added in what they had been learning in media class with coding to code the Dash Robot to drive across the map and tell some interesting facts. Videos of these projects will be on display on the bulletin board outside the Media Center during conferences next week.
Unit C students had more in-depth lessons on online safety like password security and email etiquette. Students are now learning about Google Docs, Pages, and various movie making tools. They will soon combine these things to create a class eBook with interactive pages.
In addition to Media Specials class, students also visit the Media Center each week to hear books read aloud and checkout library books.
A big highlight of October was the Ridgeway One Read. On Monday this past week, we had a surprise visit from the author Kate Klise! The students were eager to show off their fountain artwork and hear her presentation as to the process she uses to write.
