Week In Review and a Look Ahead: Friday, September 1, 2023
Principal's Message
Week two is in the books and our students are off on a four-day weekend for the Labor Day Holiday.
Included in this week's edition is information about upcoming events, such as 7th and 8th grade back to school night, as well as information on activity fees and logistical information about home varsity football games at BASH. MS students must have a parent/guardian accompany them to all home games at Memorial Stadium at the high school.
Please note that the date of our annual Bear-A-Thon has changed to Friday, March 15, 2024
Enjoy the weekend!
7th and 8th Grade Back to School Night
Monday, September 18, from 6:30-8:00PM will be our 7th and 8th grade Back to School Night. Parents/Guardians will be able to walk their child's Day 1 schedule. We will begin promptly in your child's Period 1 class at 6:30PM. Doors will be open at 5:15PM for a special 8th grade family presentation (see below). A hard copy of your child's schedule will be in your period 1 classroom waiting for you, or you can access Infinite Campus for their schedule. This is geared for adults as we do not have space to welcome our students this evening.
8th Grade Families- Presentation Prior to Back to School Night
MSE 8th grade parents and guardians are invited to preview Victim Services Center of Montgomery County’s “Creating Better Boundaries” program on Monday, September 18 from 5:30-6:15pm in the auditorium, before the start of MSE Back to School Night for 7 & 8 grades. This is a program focused on safety, sexual harassment prevention, bullying prevention, and social-emotional skill building. In this preview, parents and guardians will learn about the three-part program and what each lesson entails. Educators from Victim Services Center will give an outline of the program and its activities, and will be able to answer any specific questions parents and guardians have about what the 8th grade students at MSE and MSW will be learning between (parts 1&2) October 13, (part 3) November 8, and (part 4) January 11-23 in their REACH for the Future classes.
ASHH IS BACK!
After School Homework Help (ASHH) is back beginning Wednesday, September 13th and Thursday, September 14th. It will run on Wednesdays and Thursdays every week going forward until the middle of May. For those not familiar with the program, ASHH is a time when students may stay after school and work on schoolwork from 2:40 to 3:55 PM every Wednesday and Thursday. They will have supervision and academic support from several teachers: Mrs. Melchiorre, Mrs. Lutz, and Mr. Howard. Students must have transportation home at 3:55PM and will be dismissed to the front loop at the main office entrance/exit. Students do not need to sign up ahead of time, however they MUST make sure they have a ride home at 3:55PM. Students staying for ASHH report directly to room 321 when second run buses dismiss at the 2:40 PM bell.
VIRTUAL ASHH OPTION: We realize not all students who would benefit from academic help can get a ride home from school; therefore, we are offering a virtual ASHH option for all students. There will be an open ASHH Google Meet from 5:00pm to 6:15pm Mondays only.
If you choose to join the virtual ASHH option please join the Google Classroom Code: zikg65b and once in the classroom, click the Meet link on the left side of the main page.
If you have a question about ASHH please email Mr. Howard jhoward@boyertownasd.org

Loud in the Library
The Second Week in the Library
We just finished the second week of school, and the library is busy. We have checked out 1,286 books and items this year. A few students found the library rock and hid it again. We had a 6th grade get to know you session and a loud in the library board games event. The sixth graders say the coolest things about the library are the cycledesks, the reading chairs, the plants, and the books! The best quote so far was, “I think this is the best day of my life because I get to read this book and complete the series!”
What’s in the library?
There are over 25,000 items in the East Library including almost 8,000 fiction books, over 700 graphic novels, 13 chess sets, 25 craft kits (knitting, crocheting, hat looms, and scarf looms), and five microscopes. The kids can keep the yarn they use from our craft kits. We also take yarn donations!

Car Line Dismissal Procedures
Please note the following changes that will allow us more undisturbed time in the afternoon and an easier pathway for students to secure their way home during the afternoon dismissal. Until further notice:
- Period 9 ends at 1:48 (this is not a change)
- Period 10 begins at 1:53 (this is two minutes later than our normal time)
- All students are to go to their lockers between period 9 and 10 and take everything they need for period 10 and to go home (this is a change)
- At 2:20, football players will be dismissed by PA to board the transport bus to MSW (this is not a change)
- At 2:30, Early Buses 41 and 22, 6th grade car riders, and all vans will be dismissed (this is a change)
- Students must report directly to buses/vans/cars and should get there without stopping at lockers.
- Those students with special needs who require more time to get to the van pick-up area may leave earlier with their supporting teachers and aides.
- At 2:35, the bell will ring dismissing 1st round buses and 7th grade car riders. We will continue to make PA announcements with this as well for a few more days (this is a slight change)
- At 2:40, the bell will ring dismissing 8th grade car riders, athletes, and second round bus riders to the café (this is not a change)
- Car drivers are asked to not report before their pick-up times. This will reduce a clogging of our car rider loop.
- All cars must turn right onto Big Road/73 when exiting our campus.
- Utilize the entire length of the sidewalk when dropping off/ picking up students.
- Those students who require more time to get in and out of the car (those on crutches for example) should wait until their car is all the way up to the end of the sidewalk to enter and exit. This allows others to safely pass them and to keep the line moving.
