Future Ready Opportunities
Some thoughts for the starting school year
DCA Pathways offer students a unique opportunity to receive college credit while earning high school credit. There are programs students can participate in as described below.
Early College Credit/Start College Now
Early College Credit Program (ECCP)
Applies to University of Wisconsin, Private, Non-profit Colleges, and tribal colleges
For students in Grades 9-12
State statute (118.55) allows Wisconsin public and private high school students to take one or more courses at an institution of higher education for high school and/or college credit. You must discuss your enrollment with your counselor and submit your completed forms by February 1st for Summer, March 1st for Fall courses and October 1st for Spring courses.
Start College Now (SCN)
Applies to Technical Colleges in Wisconsin
For students in grades 11 and 12
“Start College Now” will allow high school students the opportunity to take college courses at Wisconsin Technical Colleges. Statute 38.12 (14) lays out all the aspects of the program. Students looking to take courses in the fall semester must turn in the application by March 1. For spring semester courses the same application is used, however the due date is October 1.
What you need to know:
Courses are not approved if our school offers a similar course
If our school approves the course, our school pays the cost of tuition and books/materials' other costs are the responsibility of the family
If a student fails, drops, or withdraws from the course, the family will be required to pay the cost of the tuition for the course.
Students cannot participate in ECCP and SCN at the same time.
High school students are the last students to be enrolled in courses
It is important to have several options for courses in case one is full or not available.
Dual Credit
Advanced Placement (AP) Credit Information
Advanced Placement classes are college level courses offered in our high schools. These courses are taught by our teachers or Stride K12 teachers. Students have the option to take an Advanced Placement exam and have the potential to earn college credit depending on their score and college policies.
Industry Certifications
Industry certifications are used by employers to verify that a potential employee is qualified for a job. Students who earn industry certifications have an advantage finding high-demand jobs with good wages and when being considered for employment, oftentimes have an advantage over those who do not hold a certification.
