Week of August 28th, 2022
From the Desk of Dr. Norfleet
Happy Weekend IGA family!
This past week has been a great one at IGA. Just to give you an idea of what’s going on in some of our classes:
Students in Mr. Harvey’s 6th and 7th grade Engineering classes designed Hurricane-proof houses using software.
In Mrs. Belflower’s 5th grade Social Studies, students learned about democratic ideals and systems that shape the United States, the U.S. Constitution, and citizens’ rights and responsibilities. The 7th grade students reviewed geographic themes including latitude and longitude, the impact of geography on population and trade, and how people interact with their environment. The 8th grade students (Georgia History) reviewed Georgia’s geography and climate.
In Ms. Hutcheson’s Math classes, all students took the Math Inventory (MI) assessment and used class results to analyze different representations of formative data and formed individual plans to prepare for advancement this school year. Next week, 6th grade Math will be comparing, contrasting, and analyzing the uses of the greatest common factor and least common multiple. 7th and 8th grades classes will be writing, advanced evaluating, and applying numeric and verbal algebraic expressions.
Additionally, Ms. Hutcheson is excited to have ongoing communication with 98% of her parents through email, remind, and google classroom. She wants to thank all parents for their ongoing assistance in the education of their students.
This is just a sample of the incredible instruction that we are seeing each day.
A couple of announcements/reminders:
- Quiz Bowl- We are excited about the opportunity to start a Quiz Bowl Team at IGA this year. We are still in the initial stages of gauging interest, but I want to encourage all students to consider joining. If anyone wants additional information, please contact Ms. Hutcheson via email. brooka.hutcheson@dcsirish.com
- Morning Arrival- Our students at the Middle School may be dropped off as early as 7:15 but should not enter the building until Mrs. Register allows them in. Students are officially tardy at the sound of the 7:55 bell, but students really need to be dropped off by 7:45 to make sure they can eat breakfast and pick up their chromebooks. I have noticed that students who are dropped later than 7:45 are anxious and tend to have a bad morning. For the sake of everyone, please have your students to school prior to 7:45. Please be reminded that, in alignment with our district goals, we are very closely monitoring attendance, including tardies.
- A special shout out to our PE teachers (including Coach Carr) for always being flexible team players and for doing such a tremendous job helping us reimagine education!
Thank you all so much for another great week of school! Looking forward to beginning another wonderful week!

It is GREAT to be a part of the IGA family!
Each week is better than the previous one. From this point forward, I would like to highlight one grade level each week. This week the spotlight is on 4th grade. Mrs. Woodard and her students have been very busy learning and growing at IGA. In math, they have been examining number forms by comparing and rounding. They are also reading paired stories with a focus on language, relative pronouns, adverbs, and sequencing events. The Revolutionary War has been the topic of study for social studies, which has uncovered a few “historians” in the making at IGA. As part of their science lessons about space, the students created the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies. What a busy and fun week of learning!
