CDW Weekly Wrap-Up

The partnership that the teachers and staff have with the parent(s)/guardian(s) of CDW is valued. When families are involved in education, there are significant benefits for students, educators, and families. The CDW teachers and staff thank you for your continued support and partnership as we close out the first marking period of the 2021-2022 school year.

Just a reminder, at the bottom of each CDW Weekly Wrap-Up are upcoming, important dates!

In honor of Veterans Day, Ms. Fischer’s and Mr. Westervelt’s 7th Grade Language Arts classes made cards and letters that will be sent to servicemen and servicewomen stationed In Ansbach, Germany. The cards will be sent to Mr. Westervelt’s son, Bryan, who is stationed in Ansbach. He will distribute the cards to members of his unit, who will be serving their country while celebrating the holidays far from home.

The Environmental Justice students not only collected CDW recycling this week, but they also weighed the first set of bags for the Nex-Trex Plastic Film Recycling Program. Now our wonderful custodians can drop off the first collection of bags to the Nex-Trex recycling location.

We will continue to collect the plastic items listed below until April 15th. Thank you to everyone who is participating. It is nice to see the Old Tappan community come together to support this important program.

Students did a project in which they made a proposal to NASA about which planet they should send a mission to next. They provided background information about the planet and then designed models of either rocket ships, rovers, or satellites.

Throughout the hallways of CDW you will find projects from Mrs. Kenduck's Spanish classes. Students researched a famous Hispanic person, wrote a brief biography about them in Spanish, and designed a "calaca," or whimsical skeleton, of that person for el Dia de los muertos.

The NJHS recently completed their annual food drive to help fill the shelves of the Old Tappan Food Pantry. This is a mandatory project for all NJHS students. Please see a picture of the NJHS members at work and the letter below from Mrs. Forcellati thanking CDW for the donation.

Reminders and updates from CDW's Student Manager

Soccer

Congratulations to Coach Gagliano and the CDW Knights on finishing their season with a strong appearance in the Championship Game at NVOT on Tuesday, November 9th. The stadium was packed with excited fans as the Knights gave the new champions, Northvale, a fierce competition.

Volleyball

Coach DiPisa had the team prepare for their playoffs through a Color War Competition Practice. Congratulations Green Team on your win!

The volleyball team had an unbelievable season! The team worked together in practice to dominate on the court in games, and each and every one of the team members should be proud of their accomplishments.

• Marking Period 1 closed today, Friday, November 12th.
• Report Cards will be available on the Genesis Parent Portal on Wednesday, November 17th at 12:00 PM.

• Students received their Marking Period 2 schedules yesterday, Thursday, November 11th.

Ms. DiPisa has started to infuse Thanksgiving gestures into the Media Center. She has started to announce students via OTBN to go to the library to add a feather to the Gratitude Turkey of CDW. See below!

Now that you have received your child(ren)'s photos, I wanted to remind you that photo retakes will be provided to any CDW student on November 30, 2021. Please see the flyer below.

Please note: If a student wishes to take a new photo, he/she must bring back the packet (minus any class composite) and return it to the photographer on that day.

Please also note: The Lifetouch photos will be provided to the yearbook committee to use in the 2021-2022 CDW Yearbook.

Mrs. Richardson's 8th Grade Google Classroom is up and running. All information regarding applying to other high schools is posted there. Additionally, all information that pertains to NVOT is also posted in her classroom, including any communication from NVOT.

Every 8th Grader has been invited to the class and has access to the information.

Once first marking period report cards are generated, she will forward the records to the schools. If you have any further questions, please email Mrs. Richardson at richardson@nvnet.org.

More clubs will be added as their schedules are confirmed.

Membership in the NJHS at Charles DeWolf Middle School will be open to seventh graders who meet the criteria at the end of the third marking period. Please visit the NJHS Webpage for more information.

If you would like to purchase insurance for your child(ren)'s school issued Chromebook, please refer to the information below.

The PTO is looking for volunteers to join the board and committees for next year!

Volunteers play a huge part in the PTO, and what they are able to offer our students and teachers. Without volunteers, many of the programs that students, teachers, and families enjoy will not be able to happen. Volunteer descriptions can be found at: OTPTO.org under "More Info" and then "Flyers."

If you have interest in joining the PTO Board, joining or running a committee, or just want to learn more- please reach out to the PTO by visiting OTPTO.org and selecting "Contact Old Tappan PTO" under the Help tab.

If a member of your household has tested positive (or is waiting on Covid-19 test results), please do not send your child(ren) to school and contact Mrs. McCarthy, our school nurse, to inform her. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Santa or Mrs. McCarthy.

In an effort to minimize the potential spread of illness (Covid or non-Covid) at school, please keep your child home if he/she:

• has a fever. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school.
• is nauseous or is vomiting.
• has diarrhea

Due to Covid-19, if your child comes to school with the following symptoms, Mrs. McCarthy, our school nurse, will call you to pick up your child from school:

• At least two of the following symptoms: fever, chills, rigors, myalgia, headache, sore throat, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, congestion or runny nose; OR
• At least one of the following symptoms: cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, new olfactory disorder, new taste disorder.

Any student who falls into one of the categories above will be required to have a negative Covid-19 test to return to school. If your child has a chronic illness with one or more of the above symptoms, please contact Mrs. McCarthy so she is aware.

Anytime your child is not feeling well, and will not attend school, please contact Mrs. McCarthy at 201-664-1475 ext. 2103.

The CDC has updated its guidelines regarding international travel. Starting November 8, students who travel internationally will not be required to quarantine following their return to the United States. The United States is requiring a negative Covid-19 test to re-enter the US (from any international destination), so quarantine will not be required. We still ask for families to monitor their child(ren) for symptoms upon their return and quarantine if symptoms surface.

Please see the information below to ensure that pick-up and drop-off procedures are safe and efficient for our students.

Drop-Off

• The drop-off line is a continuously moving line. Please do not park in the staff parking spaces along Interschool Drive to drop off your child(ren). Children are exiting their vehicles and heading towards the sidewalk, and this causes an unsafe walking zone.
• Please remind your child(ren) to exit the vehicle and walk behind your car.
• Parent(s)/Guardian(s) should not exit the vehicle. If your child(ren) need assistance, the staff members are there to help.
• Please do not use the right lane to drop off your child(ren). This lane is designated for cars moving through to the exit.

Pick-Up

• Please arrange a meeting area with your child(ren) so that you can locate them efficiently.
• Please do not park and/or exit your vehicle regardless of your child(ren) being at TBD or CDW.
• Please do not block designated emergency lanes that connect TBD and CDW.

General Traffic Rules Regarding Parking

• Never park in a "No Parking, Fire Lane." These lanes are designated with yellow paint in diagonal lines on the pavement along with the words, "No Parking Fire Lane."
• Never park along a curb that is painted yellow and leave your vehicle unattended.
• Do not double park (park your vehicle beside another vehicle that is in a designated parking space).
