HITEON HIGHLIGHTS NEWSLETTER
MAY 2021
Principal's Message
Greetings Hiteon Community,
Spring is in the air, and not only are we working together to end this school year strong, but we are beginning to think about the next school year. Our main office is busy enrolling kindergartners for next school year, so if you are enrolling a new kindergartner for the 21-22 school year, or if you know a neighbor who will be, please do so as soon as possible. It helps with staffing and placement to know how many students are coming in the fall and who might be coming in other grades. For new kindergarten families, be sure to join our Kindergarten Orientation on May 13 (6:30 PM Zoom Link will be available on May 12) to meet the kindergarten teachers and learn more about the fall session.
A huge “Thank You” to all the parents/guardians who helped celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week this week. The Hiteon staff was showered with flowers, lunch, a swag bag, and heartfelt cards. We feel such gratitude at the outward showing of the Hiteon Heart to all of us. We have such an amazing community of families that makes being part of Hiteon so special.
On behalf of Hiteon, we want to send a Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms in our community. Moms help keep things organized and moving forward. A fun quote about moms, “Life doesn’t come with a manual. It comes with a mom.”
Be well, and stay safe!

Playground Summer Use
This summer, Hiteon will be getting a new roof, which means that the school playground will be closed for safety reasons. Starting Tuesday, June 22, no one will be allowed on the playground due to debris falling off the roof and equipment on the premises. Thank you for your cooperation during the summer months.

State Testing Information Grades 3, 4 & 5
Beginning Wednesday, May 12 State testing for grades 3, 4, & 5 will begin for the families that have chosen to test. Please read the information below. The window for testing sign-up closed on April 30. We are not accepting any more students for testing.
Before the Test
Please consider having your student take the sample tests in advance. This will give you the ability to see the format of the test and the type of questions asked and it will give your student the ability to practice navigating the test. Students do not receive a score on the sample test; it is to gain familiarity with the tests.
If your student will be riding the bus, you will receive bus stop pick-up and drop-off times on May 10th.
If your student is in CDL, make sure your student is familiar with school safety protocols.
A good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast is important!
On Test Day
Students who bring a phone or smart watch to testing will be asked to turn off all electronics and placed on a table inside the testing area.
Your student should arrive for testing with their fully charged Chromebook, mask, and their own earbuds/headphones for testing.
Send a full water bottle
If your student took the bus to school, they will remain at school until the bus arrives to take them home. If you dropped off your student, you may make arrangements with the school to pick them up if they complete the test early.
If your previously confirmed student is unable to test, please let us know by calling the school (503) 356-2140.
Student will be dropped off at the 4 & 5 Grade GREEN entrance (See map)
Students will be picked up at the front Yellow entrance (See map)
After Test Day
Scores will be available in both StudentVue and ParentVue approximately one week after testing. Students will receive an overall score and performance level for each test.

BSD Talented and Gifted (TAG) Update
Identification of TAG students typically includes a test score from a normed national or state standardized test. In response to the challenges and impacts of COVID-19, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) adopted a temporary rule allowing districts to pause TAG identification for the 2020-21 school year.
The rationale provided to ODE for this pause included the following:
“Historically underrepresented populations (students of color, economically disadvantaged, students with disabilities and linguistically diverse) are disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. . . The 2020-21 school year has been anything but typical. Adhering to traditional processes and administering assessments that were developed and normed in a time and space that does not reflect our current reality is concerning to many district and state leaders.”
We agree. It is not in the best interest of students in this atypical year, particularly our youngest learners, to take assessments in the last eight weeks of school solely for the purpose of TAG identification. We believe that testing students for TAG identification in the fall after school routines are established is a better plan.
This pause will not affect nominated students in grades 5-8, whose testing has already been scheduled.

Safe Routes to School Survey
Dear Hiteon Parents and Guardians,
It’s data collection time again for Beaverton’s Safe Routes to School program. The purpose of this program is to make walking and biking to school safe, convenient, and fun.
Parent’s and guardian’s input into how students travel to and from schools and their impression of the safety of the route is valuable as the city and county prioritize needed improvements for our roads.
The following link was generated from the National Safe Routes to School Center and will be used to give us a good picture of how students are getting to and from schools throughout the district.
The school’s survey will be open for responses until May 31.
We appreciate your help in giving us information to make our program effective for all Beaverton School District students.
Thank you,
Leah Biado-Luis
Beaverton Safe Routes to School Coordinator

Gracias,
Leah Biado-Luis
Coordinador de Rutas Seguras a la Escuela de Beaverton
