On Thursday, September 22, Colonel Tucker "Cinco" Hamilton spoke in front of 200 parents, students, and community members on the future of aviation and robotics. Hamilton is an Experimental Fighter Test Pilot for the United States Air Force and also the Director of the F-35 Integrated Test Force. He was a lead test pilot on 11 test programs, supporting the newest software, systems, and artificial intelligence.

Colonel Hamilton spoke to the crowd about the need for future engineers, coding, artificial intelligence, and where aviation is headed in the future. He emphasized the importance of STEM in education and the available career opportunities for our students.

The event was hosted by our VolTech Robotics Team. A special thanks to our Math teacher and Robotics Advisor, Yousuf Marvii, for connecting with Colonel Hamilton and setting up this great opportunity for our students!

On September 17, Walnut High School ASB held a Homecoming Dance for our student body. Over 1,200 students bought tickets and it was an amazing night for our students. There was a DJ, taco bar, desserts, shaved ice, drinks, games, photo booths, and much more! Thank you ASB for putting on an amazing dance for our student body tonight. This was one of the highest attended dances in Walnut High School history.

Come to the Cabaret! (Night that is……). This year we are performing in the performing arts center! You will hear all five choirs sing songs from Broadway to classic Pop, And we will also feature selected soloist and small ensembles. Walnut Valley USD is excited to host this year’s Parent Symposium on Saturday, October 1 at Walnut High School from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Nancy Frey, co-author of “All Learning Is Social and Emotional” and “Your Students, My Students, Our Students”.

After the keynote, parents will have the opportunity to attend two different break-out sessions.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month —a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. We use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people affected by suicide. Our goal is ensuring that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help.

• Any exam ordered after will accrue a $40 late fee + $100.

SENIORS, If you have not had your senior portrait taken by South Coast Photographic, the deadline is September 30. Please call or visit their website to make an appointment ASAP. Slots are filling up fast. See flyers attached for more information. Senior quotes are also due Sept. 30. You must have a senior portrait (or an appointment for one) to submit a senior quote.

If a student tests positive with COVID-19, please refer to the isolation instructions below from the Department of Health. The student MAY come back after Day 5 if they provide a negative test (at-home test is accepted) and have reduced COVID symptoms with no fever.

Due to many problems and safety issues we DO NOT allow student lunches to be delivered anywhere on campus.

Food, drinks or other items are NOT to be passed to students through the fence. This is strictly prohibited.

Outside Food Delivery Services such as UBER Eats/Door Dash is strictly prohibited. Food will be confiscated if deliveries are dropped off.

We understand the importance of student nutrition but we encourage students to either use the free lunch at school or bring their lunch from home.

One of the most frequent questions GLCs get from parents is "how can I best help my student to self-discover?" This is a great question because more and more colleges are looking for students who have a clear knowledge of who they are and what they can contribute to their specific institution. There are several tools that can help, but one great starting point is a personality or strengths tests. Here is a short video about the test that will be given.

If you are interested in taking this exam, there are two dates when it can be taken:

• For Mrs. Schultz’s students (A-Lim): Thursday, September 22nd in the MPR.
• For Mr. Galeener’s students (Lin-Z): Thursday, September 29th in the MPR.

The Freshmen Roadmap includes 8 skills that highly successful students' practice to become more independent and effective. The first month we focused on being proactive. Our second installment emphasizes the act of beginning with end in mind. This short video will not only teach you how to set goals but also how to accomplish them. The ending even includes a short message from your Freshmen GLCs. Our hope is that this series contributes to your core, character and motives.

We are thrilled to welcome you to Walnut High School. Your first week was an absolute success! While we know that the transition to high school is an exciting time, we also know that it is a time in which you will have some questions. As your Grade Level Coordinators, we look forward to supporting you each step of the way and answering each question you have. This website has a tremendous number of resources, and we encourage you to look through the content weekly. It is our goal to provide you with the most dynamic high school experience while preparing you for your post-secondary goals. GO MUSTANGS!

Students must attend every class, every day, and be on time. In order to receive daily credit, students are to bring all necessary materials to class. Students will not be excused from class to get materials. Homework and class assignments are to be completed on time and to the best of the student’s ability. Only behaviors befitting the learning environment are acceptable. Students are to comply with all reasonable requests of any staff member. Dress code will be enforced.

Please remember that attendance counts, every period, every day. Students will be marked absent if they are not at the beginning of each period to verify their attendance.

All single-period absences will need to be reconciled through the attendance office by the student. If marked absent, students will receive an email from the attendance office notifying them that they have been marked absent. The notification will include the date and period of the absence. The student will need to contact the Attendance Department to make any necessary corrections to their individual period attendance. For full-day absences, a parent/guardian must contact the attendance office by the end of the day.
