Wiggin Street Parent Update
December 15, 2023
Better Together
Dear Wiggin Street Families,
We have had so much fun this week with all our students. The week before break takes a lot of preparation and energy for the staff, but there are so many wonderful memories created. We hope you enjoy the pictures and videos in this update.
Happy Holidays,
Christy Grandstaff
Grades 3-5 Winter Program; December 12th
Gingerbread Man Play
Run, run, as fast as you can to see our Kindergarten classes perform "The Tale of the Gingerbread Man" play! Students should arrive at 6:00 pm on Dec. 18th to get their costumes. Parents are welcome at that time to proceed to the gym with the performance beginning at 6:15 pm.
Icelandic Book Flood
Students celebrated the Iceland tradition of Jólabókaflóð (Icelandic Book Flood) this week. In Iceland, books are exchanged on Christmas Eve, and people spend the rest of the night reading. They take their books to bed along with some chocolate. Classroom teachers read The Christmas Book Flood in their classes for students to better understand the tradition.
Wiggin Street students chose 2-3 books to take home to read over Winter Break. They also received a bookmark to go with their books to explain the holiday as well as a packet of hot chocolate mix courtesy of Friends of Wiggin Street.
Kindergarten students pretended that they were in Iceland and got cozy with their books. What better way to learn about the holiday than experiencing it!
A Visit from Santa
Holiday Shop and FOW
The students enjoyed shopping today for their friends and family at the Holiday Shop. We appreciate all the efforts from the Friends of Wiggin Street to make this such a wonderful event for all!
The next FOW meeting is Tuesday, January 9th, at 5:00 pm in the library.
5th Grade Virtual Zoo
After investigating physical and behavioral adaptations, students designed a Nonfiction text to share with the younger grades at a Virtual Zoo.
Holidays Around the World
First and Second Grade students learned about how people from other countries celebrate holidays based on their culture.

Head Lice Information
It's the time of year when schools often see an increase in head lice. Please make sure that you check your child’s hair. Head lice can pass from one child to another through sharing hats, caps, scarves, and combs.
What to look for:
Adult lice are small (about the size of a sesame seed)
Eggs (nits) are usually found firmly attached to the base of the hair shaft
Lice stay near the scalp, often behind the ears, near the neckline, and back of the head
Head lice hold tightly to the hair. They move by crawling. They cannot hop or fly (they do not have wings) but do move quickly making it difficult to find in a child’s hair
Signs of a head lice infestation include an itchy scalp and a tickling sensation in a person’s hair. Head lice are most active in the dark.
If your child is found to have head lice, it is important to treat your child before he/she returns to school. Please begin treatment as soon as possible. It is also important to treat the house such as bedding, pillows, stuffed animals etc.. as well as routine checking of other family members in the household heads for the next 2-3 weeks. Your prompt action is requested so that your child can get back to school as soon as possible and not miss learning opportunities in the classroom. Please contact the school office to notify us that your child has lice and when they were treated.
