Message from the Principal
Happy Fall! The weather is changing and the trees are showcasing vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows. With the weather change comes cooler weather. Please make sure your student(s) have the appropriate clothing (ie. jackets) and that names are written inside the garment to make it easier to return to their owners if lost.
Thank you to all who attended our Pastries with the Principals! I always appreciate your questions and collaboration around topics that improves the student experience. If you were unable to make it, I'll be sending out a message with the information we covered. Our next Pastries with the Principals will be on November 8th at 8:00 am.
We are excited to continue providing after school student experiences at Hoover and it is all made possible by our parents who are able to volunteer an hour a week to build kindness in our community (Kindness Club), and share cooking skills (Cooking Club) and woodworking techniques (Woodworking Club). Those clubs are looking for parents who would be willing to donate some time to support the learning. We are also looking to provide other club opportunities so if you have a hobby or passion that you would like to share with students, please call the office so we can collaborate!
I am excited to announce that we are now having whole school assemblies! This last week, all grades were able to participate in a sing-along, a Minute to Win-It competition and the Hoover song. Families are invited to join us at our Hurricane Assemblies, which take place the last Friday of each month (Thursday if Friday is a non-school day) at 8:05 am.
Have a fantastic October!
Sincerely,
Principal Holman

AFTER SCHOOL CHANGE OF PLANS
Please communicate with the office and/or your student's teacher if you change plans for after school BEFORE 2:00 PM (by 12:30 on Wednesdays).
These timelines are so we can be sure your student gets notified in time.
ATTENDANCE
Please remember to contact Hoover if your child will not be at school. State law requires that schools ensure that a parent or guardian is notified by the end of the school day on any day that a child has an unplanned absence. That means that if a parent does not call us to let us know that their child will be absent from school, we must make contact with that parent in person or by phone regarding the absence.
MONITOR YOUR STUDENT ONLINE WITH SECURLY FOR PARENTS
In the Medford School District, we use Securly for Parents to help monitor student internet usage on Chromebooks. After students are enrolled, guardians will receive an email from ‘Securly Support (support@securly.com)’ stating that an account was created for the SecurlyHome App, along with instructions on how to access Securly. Securly allows you, as parents/guardians, to
See your child’s online activity from any District provided Chromebook, while also providing a weekly email report of activity
Allow you to manage the filters while at home and block additional sites that you feel appropriate to block
Allows you to pause the internet on your child’s device if necessary while at home, either manually or on a schedule.
If you do not receive an email, be sure to check your spam / junk folder. You can also check with your child’s school to confirm that you have an email address entered in Synergy. If you have any questions on how to use Securly, please feel free to contact our Helpdesk by email (helpdesk@medford.k12.or.us) or by phone (541-842-1111). Information is also available at https://homesupport.securly.com/hc/en-us.

CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS AT HOOVER
Please do not send cupcakes or other birthday treats to school with your student. In order to make sure we maintain equity, we celebrate everyone at one time each month. Thank you for your understanding about this issue.
Every month we have a special birthday cupcake celebration for all students with birthdays for the month. In May, we also celebrate June birthdays and in September, we celebrate July and August as well.
If your student has invitations for a birthday party, we ask that they are not handed out in class unless the whole class is invited. Otherwise, your student will need to hand them out after school. Thank you again for your understanding.
PUBLICITY DENIAL NOTIFICATION 2023-24
PUBLICITY DENIAL
Medford School District staff often take photos and videos of students during field trips, school events, sports activities, performances and during classroom instruction to share the work and accomplishments of students. Those accomplishments are shared through the district
website, social media, print publications, fliers and brochures. The district also works with local news media to promote student work, as well as district projects and initiatives.
If you do not want your students’ image to be published, please visit your school office to fill out a Publicity Denial form. We will make every effort to protect the privacy of your student.
Please note, the district cannot guarantee a student’s image will not be published if the student is photographed/videotaped in a large group or crowd setting such as school assemblies, sports events, and public meetings.
Please contact the Communications Department at msd.communications@medford.k12.or.us with any questions.
Return Unused Chromebooks
As you know, we provide Chromebooks to MSD students. We have noticed some Chromebooks are still checked out to households and not being used.
Please return any unused Chromebooks to your student’s school as soon as possible. This will help us provide Chromebooks to students who need them!
Chromebooks and Chargers
As you may know, we provide Chromebooks for all students to use. This year, we are replacing all Chromebooks and chargers throughout the MSD.
Chromebooks are generally kept in classrooms at the elementary level, but checked out to students to take home at the secondary level.
We are implementing reasonable fees again for lost or damaged equipment. The fees are below what it actually costs to replace the technology.
$25 replacement cost for chargers
$350 replacement cost for Chromebooks
We appreciate your understanding as we work to provide functioning technology and equipment for you and your students’ needs!

Marching for Kindness
Thank you!
Special thank you to Gabrielle Kelly and Alecia Day for helping put together this year’s Kindness March. It was a fantastic success, and we have even more beautiful rocks out in our Kindness Rock Path from the event.

VOLUNTEERS IN MEDFORD SCHOOLS (VIMS)
In the Medford School District, we aim to harmonize community by engaging our families and community partners to support our students. We rely on empathetic, caring volunteers to assist in many capacities in which you can serve, from small groups to one-on-one, in grades K through 12. Regardless of how much time you have or how many students you can serve, the impact you will have is great!
If you are interested in volunteering in the schools, please read the following guidelines.
How to Get Started
1. Fill out the online application and pass a background check.
For the safety of our students, all volunteers are required to fill out an application and pass a criminal background check before they become a volunteer at the Medford School District. The information you provide in your application will allow us to conduct a criminal background check.
Your volunteer status is good for two years, at which time you will need to renew it by filling out a new application. We will also run another background check.
2. Check your email for approval status. Once the steps above are completed, you will be notified via email if you have been approved. Please check your spam folder just in case. You should then notify the school so that they can work with you on when you will be needed, etc.
*If you have students attending more than one school, you will not need to complete this process more than once.
Hoover VIMS need to have their state issued identification (i.e. driver's license) to check in to the building for an additional security measure. We cannot allow you in the building/classrooms without this form of identification.
