Increase Perceived Fairness for Tasks

PAX Tool: Random Sticks
"That's not fair!"
Sound familiar? When a child feels as though they are being treated unfairly, it affects their willingness to give us the behavior we are asking for. Random sticks help to increase perceived fairness and reduce conflict. Let the sticks decide!
Examples of When To Use Random Sticks
By Order
Use sticks labeled 1, 2, 3, etc to help choose the order each child does a task such as:
- bath time
- chooses T.V. show
- who starts a game
- etc.
By Child
Create a stick for each child in your house (include yourself if/when appropriate) Use child specific sticks for items such as:
- Who gets to choose the movie for the night
- Who goes first during tech time
- Who gets to ride in the front seat of the car
- Who gets to help make dinner
- etc.
Meal Time
Create sticks with the meals you plan to make for that week. Let your "picky eaters" choose sticks to help plan the menu for the week or for that day's meals.
Chore Time
Write a different chore on each stick. Have children choose the chore by choosing a stick.
Homework/School Work
Write a variety of at home learning activities on sticks. Let your children choose the order of activities by choosing sticks during homework/academic time.
Kindness Activity
Have each child draw a stick with someone else's name on it. Challenge them to do a random act of kindness for the person whose stick they drew.
