From the Principal...Steve Morrill

I hope that everyone in the Thompson School Community had both a restful and memorable Thanksgiving holiday week. It has been great to see students and staff get back in the swing of things so quickly after a week away from school. This has been an especially busy week. I’ve included a few highlight below:

Our Thompson book fair kicked off on Tuesday and runs through December 8th.
Earlier this week, counselors from both of our high schools met with 8th graders to begin the transition to high school.
Wednesday was an early release day allowing our teachers valuable collaboration time.
Our PTO met this week as they continue to support our great school community.
Yesterday, students completed their winter diagnostic Math assessments (i-Ready) and will complete the reading portion Monday. These results will be mailed home.

Thanks to parents and guardians for all that you do to support your children and the learning opportunities that are provided to them.

The weather outside is becoming cooler by the day. Please make sure that your middle-schooler is dressed appropriately for the elements (warm coats, hats, and gloves).

Students should not be dropped off at Thompson prior to 8:00 am as the building does not open before that time and students are not supervised before 8:00 am.
Bus dismissal...will it be indoors or outdoors?

Our hope is to have outdoor bus dismissal whenever possible.
If it is unsafe due to inclement weather (extreme temperatures or precipitation) students will remain indoors and will be dismissed to get on their bus as they arrive in the afternoon.

The 2nd quarter ends in two weeks on December 17th. Please take a few minutes to make sure that your child’s assignments are in. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teachers.

Thompson Students Shine

51 students from Thompson entered the 2021 Patriot’s Pen essay contest. This year's theme was "How Can I Be A Good American?" The prevalent themes in their papers were respect, kindness, and empathy for others. Below are the top five winners at Thompson. Congratulations to all of our talented students!

TMS Spirit Week - December 13th - December 17th

The Student Council is hosting a spirit wear day the last week before Winter Break!

Monday: Still Asleep Day! Wear PJ’s and comfy clothes.
Tuesday: Tacky Tuesday! Mismatched clothes and crazy hair.
Wednesday: Tropical/Beach day. Wear tropical clothing that you might wear on the beach!
Thursday: Sports Day! Wear your favorite jersey.
Friday: Festive Day! Put on a Santa Hat and an ugly sweater!

PTO Holiday Cookies

Help make our staff at Thompson a sweet treat this holiday season!

Drop off homemade treats in disposable containers in the main office anytime on Wednesday, December 15th or up until 9:00 am on the morning of December 16th. Assembling and distribution will take place on Thursday, December 16th from 9:30 - 11:30 am in Thompson's main foyer. Please consider volunteering to assemble the boxes of cookies using the signup link below.

What can you bake? Anything your family loves! We ask that you donate in increments of 2 dozen, anything from cookies, brownies or any holiday sweet treat. These will be boxed up and given to each staff member. If you make GLUTEN free or NUT free cookies, please label them that way BEFORE you drop them off! If possible, please no chocolate chip cookies. The Peer Leadership Program for Incoming St. Charles East Freshmen

Dear Parents of 8th Graders Attending East,

Peer Leadership is an extracurricular program that matches selected incoming freshmen with juniors and seniors who make the transition into high school fun and easy and mentor them throughout the year. Because this program meets during the school day, it has to be put into a student’s schedule when registering for next year’s classes. Although we would like to be able to offer this to all interested incoming freshmen, our numbers are limited by available classroom space and our budget. Therefore, in order to start the selection process, interested students should apply using the application found at the bottom of the Friday Forecast.

If your child is interested in the program, please fill out the application and e-mail it to Jim Reed, the Peer Leadership Coordinator (James.Reed@d303.org). Completed applications must be received no later than Tuesday, January 11, 2022. For more information about Peer Leadership, please attend Future Saints Night in January.

Thompson Yearbooks

Every year, Thompson students publish a Thompson yearbook. Students who decide to purchase a yearbook are given this keepsake at the end of the school year. Buying a yearbook is optional and not all students choose to own one. The price of the yearbook is $25.

Have you ordered your Thompson 21-22 Yearbook? You can check your PushCoin account to see if you have purchased one by going to 'transactions' and then adjusting the start date back to April 1, 2021. We are extending the due date for ordering books to Friday, January 21, 2022. Contact Kim Walters (kimberly.walters@d303 or 331-228-6410) if you have any questions or need financial assistance.

Toys for Kids

The Salvation Army is sponsoring its annual Jim Wheeler Toys For Kids program. This program collects and distributes toys for the needy children of the Tri-City area. The program is named in honor of the late Jim Wheeler who was the creator and driver behind this effort.

Please consider purchasing an unwrapped toy for a child and placing it in the toy collection box in our main foyer by Tuesday, December 7th. Thank you for your support!

TMS Spelling Bee

The buzz around Thompson Middle School is that there will be an informational meeting on Tuesday, December 7th in room #112 for any student who is interested in participating in this year’s TMS Spelling Bee. At this meeting, students will be given more details, a permission slip, and a practice guide to support them as they prepare for this big day!

The Spelling Bee will take place in the Thompson LRC on Tuesday, January 25th beginning at 4:00 pm. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact Michelle Gupta at Michelle.gupta@d303.org.

E-Learning Plan and Emergency Days

The School Board has approved an E-Learning plan that gives the district the option to offer remote learning in place of emergency days. Currently, our last day of school is Tuesday, May 24, which is the week before Memorial Day. As we move into the winter months, we want to update you on the plan for how the district will manage emergency days and e-learning days.

If we experience inclement weather, the first three days will be “snow days” that will be made up at the end of the school year on May 25, 26, and 27 as needed.
Subsequent emergency days will be remote days so the last attendance day will still be before Memorial Day.
If there is a long stretch of inclement weather (blizzard, polar vortex, etc.), we may split the days into “snow days” and e-learning days so as to not have too many non-attendance days in a row.
