Dear BHS Families and Students:
BHS BRUINS – We are now into Quarter 3 and our Second Semester of the 2022-2023 school year. We are just about halfway through the school year!
I shared the following with students this past Monday. Please have a conversation with your students and help us reinforce the general expectations and policies about using appropriate language at school.
EDUCATIONAL LIFE LESSON REMINDERS about LANGUAGE and PROFANITY on School Grounds…
- 1245 students and 212 adults come to BHS each day. Students are REQUIRED to be here by NYS Law. Faculty/Staff are required to be here as part of the job they were hired for.
- Everyone has a different tolerance and acceptance level for foul, offensive, derogatory, and inappropriate language/profanity.
- At BHS, EVERYONE has a right to attend school in an environment that is safe, welcoming, caring, professional, and free from harassment.
Due to this, the language used at school MUST be at a PG level, even among friend groups…
- NO F-bombs
- NO derogatory or hate filled racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, offensive, obscene, or inappropriate language, comments, or gestures.
- NO foul language or derogatory language or gestures directed at other students or staff or faculty members, during the school day or during a school event.
While language used among and within your friend groups at school may NOT be taken as hateful or offensive, the other people around you and the people REQUIRED to be here at school may be offended or hurt by such language.
There is a MAJOR difference between how you talk with friends/family at your home or in private, versus how you talk with them at school, at work, inside a business, or in public.
Everyone at school must be here. People in your home or hanging out with you choose to be there and can walk away or leave if they don’t like what is being said. People at school don’t have a choice to leave.
What doesn’t offend one student or a group of students, may be HIGHLY offensive to another student, a group of students, or to faculty and staff members.
I have asked faculty, staff, administration, and now students, to correct one another when foul language is used and especially if it is directed at a staff member or another student.
If you witness or are the victim of hate speech or offensive, obscene, or inappropriate derogatory language, it is your duty to report that to a teacher or an administrator or counselor. “IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.” It is that simple.
In some cases, the use of foul language may warrant just a conversation between friends or with an adult. In other cases, it may warrant several 4-hour detentions to think about what was said and why it was hurtful or upsetting. In more extreme cases, it may warrant an in school suspension or out of school suspension depending on the nature of the language and the context of the situation.
Again, “IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING,” because,
EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE, has a right to attend school in an environment that is safe, welcoming, caring, professional, and free from harassment.
I am happy to talk to any student(s) or staff member(s) about this if you would like to discuss further.
Be well,
T. Hall

Students in the News. Making BHS Proud!
Kudos to BHS Executive Council
- KUDOS to the Executive Council for planning our first Winter Formal Dance since 2019. We had a record breaking crowd of close to 300 students (1/4 of our student body) attend Friday night’s formal.
- Students had fun and everyone behaved like model BHS students all night long. That deserves a HUGE shout out to our students. Without your cooperation and maturity, we could NOT do such an event. THANK YOU!
- Thank you also to our faculty/staff and administrator chaperones. Without them, we could NOT do such an event. THANK YOU!

What Every Parent and Caregiver Needs to Know About Fake Pills
https://www.dea.gov/sites/default/files/2022-11/DEA-OPCK_Parent%20flyer_V2.pdf
Fake prescription drugs like Percocet, Vicodin, Oxycodone, Xanax, Alprazolam, Adderall, OxyContin, and many more drugs used to treat pain and/or anxiety disorders can be made with lethal doses of Fentanyl and sold to teenagers for a cheap price.
Tips for Parents and Caregivers
- Encourage open and honest communication
- Explain what fentanyl is and why it is so dangerous (see attached article and refer to online articles below)
- Stress not to take any pills that were not prescribed to you from a doctor
- No pill purchased on social media is safe! Many teenagers are acquiring “prescription” drugs through social media. They think they have a Percocet or Xanax pill and they actually have a fake pill made with lethal doses of Fentanyl.
- Make sure they know fentanyl has been found in most illegal drugs
- Create an “exit plan” to help your child know what to do if they’re pressured to take a pill or use drugs
