Parenting Focus: Attachment
Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes by Eric Litwin
Pete takes the first day of school in stride as he discovers new places such as the library, the cafeteria, and the playground. The text is made up of the lyrics to the song he sings throughout the school day as he reads, eats, plays, paints, adds and writes in his school shoes. Children can easily pick up the repetitive pattern and rhythm of the text and sing along in no time. Pete the Cat is a reassuring character as he adapts to his school environment with confidence and ownership. Does he worry? Goodness, no!

The Pigeon has to go to School by Mo Willem
Parents need to know that Mo Willem's The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! features the beloved star of Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and other funny picture books. This one captures the kinds of anxieties a kid can feel about going to school for the first time: What if I don't like it? What if the teacher doesn't like me? The story is silly and relatable, and the illustrations are a kick as they emphasize the bird's fretting and his one giant eye.

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
Audrey Penn’s children’s book “The Kissing Hand” tells the story of a young Chester Raccoon who is scared to leave his mom and go to school. His mom has a secret, though: when she kisses his hand, he can always press his little paw up to his little face and he’ll be able to feel her love.
Parents of young children know that this story is super relatable. When kids go to school for the first time, it can be stressful for everyone involved. That’s why “The Kissing Hand” is such a great resource for preschool and kindergarten teachers and students and the perfect back-to-school story.
