Good Afternoon, Cougar Nation!

May is National Mental Health Awareness month, and many in our school wore green today to promote this important month/topic. Please click on the May School Counseling link embedded below in this newsletter for more events/opportunities for students this month.

The weather was beautiful this week and I enjoyed attending games on campus. Our teams competed hard, and I have been very proud of the sportsmanship that I have witnessed on a consistent basis.

The second submission of the "parent corner" is included below. Thank you again to ALL of the parents who contributed or helped in any capacity to make our educator luncheon last Friday such a huge success!

One month from today (June 10) we will celebrate our graduating seniors. It is always one of my favorite events of the year. As we approach the last month of school, I would encourage anyone with questions regarding academics or any other matter to reach out to teachers, school counselors, or any other support staff. We are here to help!

ConVal High School will be hosting Summer Academy again this summer! We are offering graduation requirement courses with a focus on hands-on, project-based assignments. Class sizes will be small, and students will have opportunities to be outside. Classes are free and will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Here are the logistics:

Who: Students who struggled academically during the school year or who want to get a head start on the upcoming school year.

Where: ConVal High School

When: July 5 - August 4, 2022; Session 1 will run from 8-10 AM, and Session 2 will run from 10:15 AM-12:15 PM. Summer Boost will run Monday-Thursday, with the exception of the first week, which will start on a Tuesday.

How: Transportation and meals will be provided. Students will register for one or two sessions based on their needs. Buses will arrive prior to Session 1 and will depart after Session 2; there will be no mid-morning bus run.

Class descriptions and registration will be released next week, so be on the lookout!

Snapshot of the week

Students from Mr. Putnam’s Ceramics class work on the finer detail of their coffee mugs. Students were discussing the weight of the mug in relation to the handle.

English 9 Students in Ms. Holcombe's classes have started their memoir unit by choosing which memoir to read and forming book clubs around their choice. Their choices are: Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom and I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai. Students meet five times over the course of reading the memoir to dive deeply into discussions about the memoir. Their goal is to search for and identify wisdom within these books about extraordinary lives. The book club format allows for students to take risks in discussing literature and formulate questions that show they are thinking analytically and critically about the book they are reading. Students are setting their own expectations for what makes a successful book club and taking responsibility to meet those expectations. They are learning about time management, student-led discussions, and using evidence from a text to support their claims.

Students in Careers in Education created models of toddler and preschool classrooms. Students' models reflected their knowledge about developmental appropriate spaces. A well-arranged classroom environment is not only welcoming but conveys a sense of order and encourages and nurtures a child's desire to explore various materials and to try things on their own. Classroom environments should offer flexible options as children will rarely do the same take the same way at the same time.

This past week, chemistry students in Mr. Stetzer’s and Ms. Young’s classes completed a copper cycle lab. Their task was to use a series of chemical reactions to convert pure copper wire into copper nitrate, copper phosphate, copper chloride, and finally back to pure copper. This process models those used by various industries to recycle copper and minimize waste. Prizes were awarded to the team in each class who recovered the most copper from the original amount they started with.

Athletics and Co-Curriculars

Congratulations to track athlete Tasha MacNeil who set a new school record in the javelin on Tuesday. Tasha threw the javelin 114 feet 3 inches, breaking the previous record set in 2002 by 11 feet 3 inches. Tasha is currently ranked 1st in D2 and 2nd in the state.

CVHS Counseling Newsletter - May 2022

The ConVal School Store is having its annual end of the year sale! Everything in the store is 20% off until May 27th.

Items include: T-Shirts, Sweatshirts, Winter Hats, Pajama Bottoms, Shorts, and one Fleece Vest.

Applications for the Exchange with Austria are due Monday the 16th of May. Please make sure that your applications are into Ms. Hodgdon if interested.

Colby Sullivan was the winning designer for the Children and the Arts Festival poster. Attached is a photo of him holding the winning design.The event will take place on May 21st from 9-4pm in downtown Peterborough. Admission is free to all.

Last Friday, May 6, in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, Conval staff were thanked with a catered lunch provided by parent volunteers. Jobs that volunteers took on included donating money to cover food costs, baking a variety of desserts, purchasing and loaning supplies such as tablecloths, balloons, flowers, plasticware and more. We hope Conval staff felt the LOVE - we are grateful for all they do! A special thanks to Emily Daniels and her company, Here This Now for covering a large portion of the food cost!

Frank Dinino spends his afternoons working at an internship at SoClean and his mornings at an internship at Pancho’s Pizza, both located in Peterborough. Our internship programs provide valuable educational and career opportunities for all of our students. Frank has worked at SoClean for two years and Pancho’s this school year and is considered a “favorite employee” by the many people that interact with him daily.
