A Message from Superintendent Tom Reusser
We are in full swing of the Christmas season. No matter how big or how small, we all have something in our lives we can be grateful for; for me its family, friends, our community and my staff at Sutter County Superintendent of Schools.
Reflecting this past year, which has flown by, I am blown away at the hard work and dedication my staff has for our students, schools and school districts and charters. They work endlessly to make sure the needs of our educators and students are taken care of.
This year, like many, was full of some challenging tasks, including the start of the Sutter County Career Training Center’s Cosmetology program. We have had several students sign up for the course and graduate from the program. Those students are now prepared to take the state licensing exam which will allow them to enter the cosmetology field overly prepared and qualified to begin their careers. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of cosmetologists is projected to grow 8% through 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations. This is why we started this program, not only to help people pursue their dreams, but to help build our local economy and bring jobs to our community. It took a village to make this happen, and I’m so grateful to my team for getting the job done.
This is also the season of giving. Please join us as we work with the Salvation Army in the Holiday Food Drive! Our office is collecting non-perishable food items now through December 21. We want to make sure families in our area don’t go hungry for Christmas. And if you’re not able to donate, there are several giving opportunities in the community including the Yuba-Sutter Marine Reserve Toys for Tots Drive, Salvation Army Angel Tree, volunteering with the Yuba-Sutter Food bank and more.
Please take this time to reflect, relax and appreciate all the wonderful things we all have been blessed with in your lives.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Superintendent Tom Reusser

News from our Districts
Welcome Chris Meyer, Meridian Elementary School District Superintendent/Principal
Sutter County Superintendent of Schools is excited to introduce Chris Meyers as the new Superintendent Principal of Meridian Elementary School District.
Following graduation from El Dorado High School in Placerville, Chris immediately knew he wanted to work in the field of education. His sights were set on teaching. He earned a track scholarship that took him to Biola University in southern California, but he ended up transferring this last year to Sacramento State where he earned his bachelors in Social Science. He began teaching at San Juan High School in Citrus Heights for many years where he also helped out in several administrative like roles. Doing this gave Chris the confidence to officially make the jump into administration at Marysville High School as Vice Principal. He continued to advance his career, taking job offers over the years at Foothill Intermediate School, McKenney Intermediate School and finally ending up at the Yuba County Office of Education where he was the principal for Community and Court schools. After spending six years at YCOE, Chris took the position as Site Leader at Highlands Community Charter School in Yuba City working with Adults. But when talk of a new Superintendent Principal came to his attention, Chris knew he had to make the leap.
“When this opportunity came up I thought, ‘You know what? My passion has always primarily been for kids and for the betterment of kids.’ And adults are great, but this job is in line with where my heart and passion lies,” explained Chris.
Coming into the position a quarter of the way into the year, Chris says it’s been a whirlwind; he’s excited to bring all of what he has learned over the years to this position.
“I believe having been in every single facet of K-12, as well as court and community, as well as working with adults, really has given me the opportunity to see every single angle of the multifaceted gem that is education,” said Chris. “I believe as the superintendent, it helps to be able to make some of those higher level decisions that are needed to help the school get to where it should be.”
One of Chris’ goals is to focus the students on their not so distant future of post-secondary education, whether that is college or career technical education.
“I want to bring in guest speakers from some of our local colleges to show the students, they can get there,” said Chris. “We want to give them the chance to see the people who can inspire them to reach their dreams.”
And although Chris’ overall goal is to grow the school with excellence and to become a place families are eager to send their kids, he never wants it to lose the small school, community feel.
Outside his new position, Chris loves to spend time outdoors and in nature. He enjoys going to the mountains, the beach and fishing. He is married and has six children.
Be sure to welcome and congratulate Chris when you see him!

Shady Creek Outdoor School
Message from Shady Creek Director, Christopher Little
“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
For all those who have spent any time around me you probably already know, I believe in dreaming BIG! I love the process of establishing dreams in our lives – It provides focus and calls us to be determined and in doing that, gives hope…… and hope is a powerful thing. Growing up, my twin brother and I would constantly write and talk about all of the possibilities of what our lives could be. Whether it was something we saw in a movie or read in a book, these incredible characters and stories were not just a great way to escape from our daily madness, but also gave the two of us hope. Big dreams can become even bigger realities….. It just takes time, focus and a whole bunch of work!
With all that said, I am so proud to announce the addition of the Shady Creek Reptile Center! What started 2 years ago with just one snake…… Is now a full kid-centric experience with 7 cold blooded Shady Creek critters for all to enjoy. All of this wouldn’t be possible without donations and other big dreamers – It happened so organically and I am forever grateful for anyone who brought this dream to life. With four different species of snakes, two species of geckos and a Pac Man frog it’s definitely one more lifelong memory for students at camp.
Here’s the official roster-
“Samara” California King Snake -- “Galaxy” Coastal King Snake -- “Elote” Corn Snake -- “Tres Leches” Milk Snake
“Nova” Leopard Gecko -- “Apollo” Crested Gecko -- “Jabba” Pac Man Frog
But the dreams don’t stop there! This month we also unveiled our camp clothing closet which is titled “Conrad’s Closet”, named after our Turkey Vulture, Conrad. Week after week, we serve students that come to camp either missing essential clothing or in dire need of an upgrade/replacement. It is hard to go without, and can be embarrassing asking for help but at Shady Creek we have a unique opportunity to help show support while students are away from home. It allows us to see a need and fill it and even the smallest gesture can mean everything. From jackets, ponchos, pants, shirts, shoes, gloves, socks and underwear in adult and child sizes, we are so proud to say we have it all! This wouldn’t be possible without key donations by our very own Teal and one of our favorite staff parents, Chris Cope. If you are interested in donating clothing old and new to this life altering resource please let me know!
November’s update would not be complete without an update about kids and LETTERS!! One of the greatest moments of my month centers around a student named Big Ness. I met Big Ness at opening ceremony on Monday and he made quite the impression. He laughed at me harder and louder than any student has ever in my career... it was SO DISTRACTING! Every time I opened my mouth to speak, there he was laughing. It wasn’t disrespectful, it was pure joy. I later found out that Big Ness couldn’t read or write and was his pure, happy, laughing self everywhere he went. What a sweet, gentile soul! Long story short, Big Ness had to leave mid-week due to a medical emergency, but by Fun Night, he was back at camp ready to roll, laughing every minute. By Friday’s closing program, I reminded myself that a student like Big Ness only comes along every several years, if not a lifetime so I made my move. I went to my office and hand selected one of my acoustic guitars, and gave this young man something that I truly love and value. After having the entire staff sign the guitar, it was time to return the smiles that Big Ness had given me. There were tears, smiles and of course laughter. (There were photo’s too….I am still waiting for it to be sent to me so I can share.) I love my JOB!
BONUS STUFF - There’s a photo of my family at a cousin’s wedding and….. a video with me doing a PSA announcement followed by the smashing of a vape pen that was confiscated on campus.
This month we were proud to serve-
Johnson Jr. (Arbuckle)
Paradise Ridge (Paradise)
Pine Ridge (Paradise)
Cedarwood (Paradise)
Lone Tree (Beal AFB)
Bear River (Wheatland)
Robla (Rio Linda)
Twin Rivers Charter (Yuba City)

Love you all! Thank you for your support!! BOOMSHAKALAKA!
