PJP Maths Week
October 16th - 20th, 2023
It's Maths Week here at Pope John Paul's and it has been a very busy week.
6th class
What is Mathematics? It is the abstract science of numbers, quantity and space. This week we celebrated all things maths. In Sixth class we used our maths eyes in our environment. Every class took in lots of maths activities and fun games. In Ms Millar’s class we took lots of maths pictures in our environment and we made maths questions about them. What did you see with your maths eyes this week?
We also did a Skittles sweets activity to find out about the diversity on colours in each packet. We even took part in a Maths League with maths riddles every day. We tried to answer some maths jokes and had so much fun.
In Ms. Cahill’s class, they did a maths survey on everyone’s favourite football team and made a bar chart with the information.
Ms. McDaid’s class played a card and dice game and found some averages from their information.
Ms. Byrne’s class in P.E. , played games to find the average number of ball passes in their teams.
Ms. James’ class worked in groups and surveyed each other on a topic of their choice and made bar graphs from their information.
Ms. Bradshaw’s class practiced their ball skills and found the average amounts of catches they could do.
We hope everyone enjoyed maths week here at PJP’s and learned loads! Have fun reading these maths jokes!
What happened to the plant in maths class?
It grew square roots!
Why was the obtuse angle sad?
It knew it could never be right!
How do you stay warm in a cold room?
Go to the corner- it’s always 90 degrees!
5th class
This week we celebrated Maths Week throughout the school. The whole school got involved in a variety of activities.
We had Bookless Maths Week lessons all week. Our class worked on lines and angles. We practiced using our protractors and learned about a range of angles such as reflex, obtuse, right, and acute.
The teachers also created a Maths corridor for us to use. In the Maths Corridor there was big angles and giant protractors. We could measure the angles and stick our answers to the angles on the ground.
We also read a story called “What is your angle Pythagoras?”. It told us a story of how Pythagoras discovered a pattern for a right-angle triangle. It was a very funny and interesting book and it fit in with Maths Week perfectly.
For homework, we were asked to find math in our environment using our maths eyes. 5th class was asked to use the theme of transport and travel. It was very enjoyable to discover how much maths is in our environment.
We also had a maths quiz in our class. Everyone got into groups of 4 and we answered 20 maths questions. The winning group from each class will compete against each other. The winner of the winners will be crowned THE ULTIMATE MATHS CHAMPION of 5th class. We cannot wait to find out who wins.
We loved maths week and cannot wait to do it again!
4th class
Maths Week Room 13
This week in room 13 we did lots of activities for Maths week.
Our Topic: Data
Our Theme : Food
Day 1:
We went around to all the 4th classes and collected data about their favourite pizza toppings. We then drew bar charts to represent our findings. The most popular topping was margarita.
Day 2:
We focused on Tally charts. We surveyed the second and third classes on their favourite pets. We weren’t surprised to hear dogs won.
Day 3:
We were introduced to Pie charts. We learned how to construct a pie chart and fill in the correct information. Our survey today was teachers most popular car colour. The result was grey.
Day 4:
We worked on our Maths project for the week which was the sugar content in our favourite treats. We were shocked with the amount of sugar in certain bars.
Day 5:
We put all our evidence together. We also worked hard during the week to upload some of our Maths eyes findings. We have attached lots of photos.
3rd class
We had a very busy week in Mr. Murphy's class learning about data.
We learned all about collecting data using surveys and representing it in different ways. We chose to survey our class on our favourite subjects. We represented this data using bar charts.
We also made real life bar charts by using our chairs as the bars. This was a really cool way of visualising which subjects were our favourite. It was no surprise to us that PE came out on top!
2nd class
Hi! Our names are Aoife and Lucy! We are in Ms. Clinton's class!
We loved maths week. We did a lot of measuring. We measured cubbies, windows, radiators, and boards. For maths eyes, we went home and took pictures of maths in our lives. We also wrote questions on our maths eyes sheet.
We used non-standard units. We used our fingers and match sticks. We used meters and centimeters and we used them to measure. They are standard units!
Puzzle Corner
Here we have some fiendishly difficult maths puzzles for children and adults alike! See if you can figure them out!
