WOW! What a great start to our school year! Thank you parents for all of your support in making the start of our school year so successful! We have had a few bumps together but with your help, we are putting things just right for our students and families! Students are working hard on their procedures for school and learning to be more independent every day! Our days are looking more and more like business as usual in classrooms kindergarten and our elearners are navigating through their day with more and more confidence.; It is so exciting to see!! Our students are so inspiring and resilient and are adapting wonderfully to their new routines. We are confident we will be able to work together through this most unusual year and create the best experience possible for our students!

Our students are working hard everyday learning! We are so proud of them! You can help support your child's learning progress by incorporating their learning goals into activities at home. Have them cut coupons, write their name on the sidewalk with chalk and always read every day with them. Help your child explore the new things he or she learned at school by encouraging practice in alternate ways!

Each year, the ELC proudly presents this program to our kindergarten students to help them plan for their future! The program is a partnership with the School City of Hobart, Marilyn's Bakery and the Legacy Foundation to help establish and contribute to each kindergartner's 529 program. We will walk parents through the process of establishing the account and through selling pies, contributions will be made to their fund. You can find out more about Indiana's 529 College fund here. Already have a fund? NO problem, by participating in the pie sale, you will also be able to receive the contributions from the pies sold to that account. A big thanks to our PTO for their organization of this project! Stay tuned for more details and dates regarding this wonderful opportunity!

The ELC works hard on character education for all of our students. We are beginning the school year this month with a lesson on bullying and hitting. Mrs. Gutierrez and Mrs. Schmidt will be visiting classrooms and presenting the story, "No More Hitting For Little Hamster" to demonstrate appropriate behavior and talk about why we don't hit others, ever. The book does a great job at illustrating the feelings and consequences from hitting; it's concept can be applied to all bullying behaviors.

As a parent, you KNOW when your child is just tired and needs some rest. Well, as educators, we also KNOW when your child is just tired and needs some rest. They may not tell us with their words, but their behavior can speak volumes. Kindergarten is not what it was when you and I were in school (I only went for a half day in Kindergarten!). Don't be surprised when you see your child coming home worn out and maybe a little cranky. To help ensure your child is getting the rest he/she needs, try establishing a consistent bedtime routine. Establishing routines can take time so don't expect it to work right away. According to the National Sleep Foundation, school age children (ages 6-13yo) should get between 9-11 hours of sleep a day, including naps. If your child is still 5 years old, he/she needs even more sleep. The recommendation for children ages 3-5 years old is 10-13 hours of sleep, including naps. A good routine can start with turning off all electronics (including television), changing into PJ's, brushing teeth, reading a few books together, and then going to bed. Make sure your child isn't taking electronics to bed with him/her as that can prevent him/her from going to sleep as well. If we work together, I think we can help overcome the Kindergarten tiredness together.

Vaccinations-

All IN PERSON STUDENTS MUST be up to date on their vaccinations BY SEPTEMBER 7TH OR WILL BE PUT ON E-LEARNING UNTIL COMPLETED Indiana state law requires you to have up to date immunizations. If you have any questions or concerns about the new school year 2020-21 requirements, please contact your school nurse.

NEW 2020-2021 IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS: Indiana State Department of Health Immunization requirements for the 2020-2021 school year Two (2) Hepatitis A vaccinations are now required for ALL grade levels for the upcoming school year. The Hepatitis A immunization consists of two (2) doses with a minimum interval of 6 calendar months between the first and second dose.

Health Conditions-

If your student has a specific health condition or needs special care during the school day such as medication, treatments, or monitoring, please inform your school nurse and provide your nurse with a care plan. Individual health care plans help keep your student safe and healthy. All care plans need to be updated every school year!

Sick students-

PLEASE KEEP ALL SICK OR SUSPECTED SICK STUDENTS HOME FROM SCHOOL. PLEASE MARK THEM OFF IN SKYWARD. SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: fever greater than 100.4 degrees, CHILLS, SORE THROAT, COUGH( especially new onset, uncontrolled cough), DIARRHEA, VOMITING, HEADACHE( particularly new onset of severe headache, especially with a fever) , NEW LOSS OF TASTE OR SMELL, MUSCLE OR BODY ACHES OR FATIGUE, CONGESTION OR RUNNY NOSE, SHORTNESS OF BREATH OR DIFFICULTY BREATHING. If you are unsure, please call your healthcare provider or school nurse for advice.
